Carson-Newman Are Winners in SAC Men's Soccer Tourney First Round

Greeneville, TN Finals Sunday, Nov. 4 at Greeneville, TN 4 pm Wingate Edges Lenoir-Rhyne 2-1 in SAC First-Rounder Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior midfielder Tarik Guendouzi (Cardiff, Wales) scored the match-winner at the 81:49 mark, leading the Bulldogs to a 2-1 men's soccer victory over Lenoir-Rhyne College in the first round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament at the Wingate University soccer facility. With the win, Wingate improves to 12-7-2 overall. The number one seed Bulldogs will face the winner of tonight's Catawba/ Tusculum match Saturday at 2 p.m. in Greeneville, Tenn. in the Food Lion SAC men's soccer semifinals. The champion-ship match is Sunday at 4 p.m. Guendouzi took a pass from junior midfielder Hyrum Hoecherl (West Valley, Utah) and beat his defender one-on-one to score his ninth goal of the season. Guendouzi had a hand in both Bulldog scores, as he tallied an assist on Wingate's first goal. Wingate freshman forward Randy Lazicki (McAfee, N.J.) made the most of his first collegiate start, scoring his first career goal on a header at the 27:47 plateau of the first half. Guendouzi fired a corner kick into the goal mouth and the 6-2 Lazicki headed the ball into the back of the nets. Lenoir-Rhyne (5-14-0 overall) did not go down without a fight. The Bears tied the match eight minutes later (35:01) on a goal by freshman forward Blake Powell. Lenoir-Rhyne senior midfielder Bobby Cummings crossed the ball into the middle of the field and Powell scored his first career goal by winding the ball inside the left post. Wingate outshot Lenoir-Rhyne 12-9. Wingate sophomore goalkeeper Philip Poole (Newcastle, England) and L-R sophomore netminder Tom Skora notched two saves each. The Bears played 10 one-goal matches this season, including two against the Bulldogs.

The win puts the Indians into the semifinals, where they will meet top-seeded Wingate University Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The match will be held at Pioneer Field in conjunction with the Food Lion SAC Fall Sports Festival in Greeneville, Tenn. Delabar scored his first goal at 19:41 via a penalty kick. Delabar scored the match-winner less than a minute into the second half, squirting a shot past Tusculum goalkeeper Tony Swaminathan (Ontario, Canada) at the top of the penalty area. Tusculum, who outshot Catawba 18-7, got as close as they would get after freshman Paul Hopkins (Portsmouth, England) took a pass from rookie Jonathan Gordon (Glasgow, Scotland) and one-timed it past Catawba goalkeeper David Durham. The Pioneers kept the pressure on the Catawba defense, but was unable to get any legitimate scoring chances. Tusculum ends their 2001 season with a 9-7-1 record. Catawba is 11-7.

Campbell's goal came off a double assist from teammates senior midfielder Keith Steen (Stone Mountain, GA) and freshman forward Jarrett Todd (Columbia, SC). The match was the sixth overtime encounter for the Blue Hose this season who are now 2-0-4 in extra period contests. Both teams have scoring opportunities throughout the match as PC outshot the Indians 22-14. The goalkeepers in tonight's match each came up with incredible saves to keep their respective teams in the match. PC's senior keeper Andy Pfaffl (Columbia, SC) went the distance picking up the shutout and tallying six saves. Newberry's freshman keeper Dustin Workman (Charleston, SC) played equally well allowing one goal and picking up seven saves on the night. The victory pits the #2 seeded Blue Hose in the semifinals against the #6 seeded Eagles of Carson-Newman College who upset the #3 seed Mars Hill College on the road today 2-1. The semifinals will take place this Saturday, November 3 at 2:00 pm on the campus of Tusculum College as part of the South Atlantic Conference Fall Festival. Presbyterian improves to 6-7-4 on the season while Newberry ends the season at 9-10-2.

Sophomore Zack Davis (Cookeville, TN) knocked in a rebound from about 20 feet out for the match-winner with just 3:23 left in regulation. After a scoreless first half, the Lions appeared to be in control after freshman Stephen Fitzgerald (Watkinsville, GA) connected on a cross from senior Sergio Vazquez (West Valley, UT) at the 81:33 mark. Carson-Newman answered the Lions' score tying the match at 1-1 in the 85th minute when freshman Martin Molnburg (Nerlandsoy, Norway) kicked a shot past Mars Hill's goalkeeper from about 20 yards away from the goal on a pass from freshman Craig Shaw (Australia). Davis then scored the match winner two minutes and 13 seconds later. The goal was Davis' sixth on the year, his second match-winning score for the Eagles on the season. The match was very evenly played. Each team made 14 shots at goal and had two corner kicks. Mars Hill junior goalkeeper Josh Bruce (Canton, GA) played all 90 minutes in goal making 10 saves for the Lions. Senior Sunjay Roberts (Gainesville, FL) made eight saves for the Eagles in the win. Carson-Newman will play the winner of #2 seed Presbyterian College and #7 seed Newberry College Saturday in Greenville, TN. Tusculum College will host the second annual Food Lion SAC Fall Festival on November 2-4. Match time for the Eagles semifinal contest is 2:00 p.m.
