Semifinals: Catawaba Upsets Wingate, Carson-Newman Does Same Thing to

The 2001 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Championship began play Saturday at Tusculum College and upsets were in the cards. Below are releases for both matches. #5 Catawba Advances to Finals with 5-0 Win Over #1 Wingate Greeneville, Tenn. - The Catawba Indians upset the top seed Wingate University Bulldogs 5-0 Saturday afternoon in the semi-final round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Championship. Catawba will play Carson-Newman tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field for the Tournament Championship. The Indians took an early 1-0 lead when Mike Delabar scored in the 25th minute of the match. Catawba then took a 2-0 lead when Wingate had a miscue on defense and scored an own goal. The Indians added one more goal before the half when Delabar had his second goal of the match on a pass from Kyle McAleese to make it 3-0. The Indians were not done yet though as Jeff Shea made it a 4-0 game in the 83rd minute of the match on a Jake Pace assist. Just two minutes later Ben Foti scored on a deflection by Bulldog goalie Todd Konen to finish the scoring onslaught by the Indians. Catawba goalie David Durham recorded six saves in his fourth shutout of the season.

The Eagles struck first when John Powell scored on a penalty kick at the 5:18 mark. The Blue Hose tied the score at 1-1 when Derek Knapp fed Jarrett Todd a shot at 9:40. Sundgot scored the next goal for C-N off an assist by Chris Dowdy midway through the first half. Chris Middendorf made it 2-2 off an assist by Keith Skeen to knot the score at 2-2. Davis's goal came on a redirect in the 71st minute to give the Eagles a 3-2 victory. The Eagles face number one-seed Wingate in the finals on Sunday at 4 p.m.
