SAC Men's Soccer Championship: #5 Catawba Defeats #6 Carson-Newman to Win Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference Tournament

Catawba--2001 Men's Soccer ChampsGREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Mike Delabar scored two goals and Jeff Shea accounted for three assists to lead fifth-seeded Catawba College to a 4-1 win over sixth-seeded Carson-Newman College in the finals of the 2001 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament, held Sunday at Pioneer Field. The tournament was held in conjunction with the Food Lion SAC Fall Sports Festival hosted by Tusculum College.

The Indians (13-7) overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to score four second half goals, including three in the final 12 minutes of the match to claim their first SAC Tournament title in 11 years. Catawba won the inaugural SAC title in 1990.

Carson-Newman (9-8-2) got on the scoreboard first when Josh Schiding scored on a breakaway goal in the 14th minute for the early 1-0 lead.

Catawba evened the match at the 67:54 mark when Nick Brown found the back of the net on an assist by Shea. The match-winner came in the 79th minute on a header by Brennan Regnar from Shea crossing pass. Delabar added a pair of insurance goals in the final eight minutes to seal the victory for the Indians.

Catawba goalkeeper David Durham recorded five saves, while C-N's Sanjay Roberts made six stops in the loss.

The Indians become the second consecutive #5 seed to win the tournament. Lenoir-Rhyne College won last year's title out of the five-spot.
