GREENEVILLE, TN – The 2002 South Atlantic Conference fall sports all-conference teams and award winners were announced at the Food Lion SAC Fall Sports Food Festival banquet, held on the campus of Tusculum College, Friday night.

More than 500 players, coaches, support staff, and SAC personnel attended the event, which kicks off the Food Lion Fall Sports Festival, to be held over the next two days in Greeneville.

Host Tusculum College received trophies for its regular season championship in men’s soccer, the first in school history, and for its co-championship in women’s soccer. This is the third year in a row the Tusculum women’s team has earned at least a share of the regular-season title.

The Carson-Newman and Catawba volleyball teams were awarded their trophies for the volleyball co-championship.

Wingate University senior forward Ben Hill from Pensacola, Fla., (Washington High School) was named the Men’s Soccer Player of the Year for the second year in a row. This year, he finished third in goals scored, and fourth in total scoring.

Carson-Newman’s Jenna Rust was named the Volleyball Player of the Year. Rust, a junior outside hitter from Lindale, Texas (Lindale HS) helped lead the Lady Eagles to the conference co-championship. She ranked eighth in kills and third in digs and was named SAC Player of the Week three times this season.

Presbyterian College’s Jessi Adair, a senior midfielder from Decatur, Ga., (Decatur HS) was named the Women’s Soccer Player of the Year, as well as the SAC’s Women’s Soccer Scholar Athlete. She wins the Scholar Athlete award for the second consecutive year. This is only the 10th time in conference history that one individual has been awarded both the Player of the Year and Scholar Athlete award on the same night.

Adair is a four-time All-South Atlantic Conference player, and has led her team in scoring for three years. She ranks third in career total points, and first in career assists in Presbyterian history. She ranks fifth in SAC history in career assists.

Adair is a senior with a 3.87 GPA as an Elementary Education major with a special interest in Early Chilhood. She has been named to the Dean’s List, the President’s List and the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She is the recipient of the John I Smith Scholarship, the Junior Fellowship Scholarship and the Endowed Scholarship.

On campus and in the community, Adair is a member of the Student Volunteer Services, where she has participated in tutoring elementary children, visiting nursing homes and Kid’s Day at Presbyterian College and working with Special Olympics. She is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The Scholar Athlete for men’s soccer is Benjamin Bostic of Mars Hill. Bostic came back from a season-ending injury a year ago to be a dominating player in the conference. He ranks fifth in goals scored and total scoring and was a first-team All-Conference pick this year.

Bostic is a junior business major and mathematics minor and has a 3.8 GPA. He is a professor’s assistant for Math 101 and frequently teaches the class. He is a Grayson scholar and has been on the Mars Hill Dean’s List every semester, as well as the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll. As a Grayson Scholar, Ben has compiled 140 hours of community service. He has participated in Make a Difference Day, and helped build a playground at a local elementary school.

Wingate University’s Lindsay Hinson was named the SAC Scholar Athlete for Volleyball. Hinson is a team captain and three-year starter for Wingate. This year, she is averaging 2.75 kills per game and 3.79 digs per game. As a freshman, she ranked third in the conference in digs, and 27th in the nation.

In the classroom, Hinson has a 4.0 GPA as a Biology/Pre-Med major. She has been named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the Wingate President’s List every semester. She is a member of the Alpha Chi and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies and is enrolled in the Wingate University honors program.

On campus and in the community, she is on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership team and a member of the Student Government Association. She is a peer advisor to entering freshmen and a women’s Bible study leader. She has also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, a local retirement home and tutors at a local middle school.

Wingate University setter Sarah Godec was named the volleyball Freshman of the Year. Godec, from Euclid, Ohio (Villa Angela HS), had to follow last year’s Player of the Year at her position. After an early season injury, she came on strong, averaging 10.5 assists per game and hitting .288.

The women’s soccer Freshman of the Year is Kyley Thompson of Catawba College. Thompson (Hagerstown, MD, Smithsburg HS) finished third in the conference in goals per game and total scoring, and was named Player of the Week on one occasion.

Wingate University’s Robert Dawson was selected as the men’s soccer Freshman of the Year. Dawson, from Manchester, England, made an immediate impact in the league in his first season. He was named the first Player of the Week of the season, and followed that with another Player of the Week award later. He ranked second in the league in assists and sixth in total scoring.

Tusculum College men’s soccer coach Tony Castainca, who guided the Pioneers to the conference title and a 16-2-1 overall record, was honored as men’s soccer Coach of the Year.

The women’s soccer Coach of the Year award went to Catawba’s John Cullen, for the second year in a row. He guided Catawba to a 13-2-1 overall record and a share of the conference title.

Carson-Newman coach Perry Robinson and Catawba coach Ginger Ashley were named volleyball Co-Coach of the Year.

Robinson wins the award for the first time in his career. The Lady Eagles were 13-1 in conference play and had a 15-match winning streak during the season. Catawba also went 13-1 in conference play and were unbeaten in 13 home matches. Ashley wins the award for the fourth time in her career.

The SAC also honored players with the SAC Senior award, given to players completing their eligibility within the league, the SAC statistical award, given to the leader in each statistical category.

Coaching service awards went to Wingate men’s soccer coach Gary Hamill (10 years); Carson-Newman men’s soccer coach Allen Vital (5 years); Catawba men’s soccer coach Craig Turnbull (5 years), Carson-Newman volleyball coach Perry Robinson (5 years) and Presbyterian volleyball coach Lisa Bugay (5 years).
