Food Lion SAC Volleyball Championship Semifinals: Catawba and Carson-Newman Move to Title Match

#1 Catawba College Advances to Finals with 3-1 Win Over #4 Wingate University

GREENEVILLE, TN - #1 Catawba College defeated #4 Wingate University in the semifinal round of the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Volleyball Tournament in Alpine Arena tonight in four games (30-18, 26-30, 30-23, 30-23). First team All-SAC selection Hope Miller (Newton, NC) and second team All-SAC member Rachel LaRoche (Wilmington, DE) led the Lady Indians to the tournament's final round.

LaRoche recorded a match high 16 kills while Miller tallied 29 digs and four service aces. Lettie Wilkes (Williamsport, MD) provided the Lady Indians with 42 assists in the victory.

Lindsay Hinson (Tallahassee, FL) led Wingate with 13 kills and a match high 30 digs followed by second team All-SAC member and conference Freshman of the Year Sarah Godec (Euclid, OH) with a match high 46 assists. Shaunna Dixon (San Antonio, TX) also recorded 13 kills in the loss for the Bulldogs.

#2 Carson-Newman College Advances to Finals with 3-0 Win Over #3 Presbyterian College

GREENEVILLE, TN - #2 Carson-Newman College defeated #3 Presbyterian College in the semifinal round of the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Volleyball Tournament in Alpine Arena tonight in three games (30-19, 30-18, 30-27). SAC Player of the Year Jenna Rust (Lindale, TX) and first team All-SAC member Kendra Rickertsen (Pelham, AL) led the Lady Eagles to victory.

Carson-Newman improved to 28-6 overall and will meet #1 Catawba College in the finals tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Presbyterian fell to 21-13 on the season.

Rust and Rickertsen recorded 12 kills apiece in the three-game sweep. Rickertsen also added a pair of service aces in the contest. Sherry Trimble (Marion, IN) supplied the offense with a match high 40 assists in the win.

First team All-SAC performer Donja Bobbitt (San Antonio, TX) led Presbyterian with a match high 15 kills followed by Kirbie Wallace (Orlando, FL) with 20 digs. Kellie Haire (Clearwater, FL) provided the Blue Hose with 35 assists in the contest.
