Wingate Leads Women's Golf after Day One

NEWBERRY, SC – Wingate University took the lead after the opening round of the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Golf Tournament being held in conjunction with the SAC Spring Sports Festival at Newberry and Presbyterian College’s. The women’s golf tournament is being held at the 5,815-yard, par-72 Newberry Country Club.

Behind a 79 by Daniela Kessler and an 81 by Chris Mechereffe, the Bulldogs posted a first round score of 329 to lead Catawba by six strokes. Kristen Kyle led the Lady Indians with an 80, while Amanda Schulte carded an 82. Tusculum stands in third with a score of 340, a shot ahead of Lenoir-Rhyne, who posted a 341. Newberry did not record a team score after three of its golfers withdrew to leave only one player.

The lone Newberry entrant remaining, Aubrey Mosley, holds the individual lead after one round. She shot a round of 76 to lead Lenoir-Rhyne’s Meghan Jolly by a single shot. Kessler and Kyle follow, while Mechereffe is tied for fifth with Tusculum’s Andrea Raines.

The ladies played nine additional holes on Wednesday and will conclude the second round on Thursday at 8 a.m. The third and final round is scheduled to tee off at noon at the Newberry Country Club.
