Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Spring Sports Festival
No. 1 Eagles Have Two Big Innings to Defeat No. 6 Bulldogs

April 26, 2002

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The top seeded Carson-Newman Eagles put up five runs in the first and made number six seeded Wingate University play catch-up for the rest of the game in a 9-7 win at Newberry College’s Kirkland Field Friday night at the 2002 Food Lion / SAC Spring Sports Festival Baseball Tournament.

The Eagles (37-16) scored those five runs on a pair of hit batters, a walk and three hits, including a Heath Mason three-run homer to left center, all before Wingate starter Andy McKinney could record one out. He was lifted for long reliever Josh Flynn at that point.

Wingate (28-23-1) returned the favor on the Eagles and got McKinney off the hook with five runs on five hits over the next two innings, including the first of two solo home runs by short stop David Yount. Yount had a game-high three hits on the evening.

Carson-Newman retook the lead in the sixth with a four-run inning which included third baseman Ryan Haun’s homer to left center. Yount committed a two-out, bases-loaded error to extend the inning and allow the Eagles to post the three unearned runs to take command of the ballgame.

Wingate scored in the sixth on Yount’s second homer and in the seventh on a John Spencer single to center to plate second baseman Stuart James, but the Bulldogs got no closer than the two runs in defeat.

Four Wingate starters had multi-hit games and outhit the Eagles 11-8, but three errors, four hit batters and six walks came back to haunt Bulldogs pitching in the loss. Only second baseman Jim Higgins had a second hit for Carson-Newman, though only two Eagles were held hitless on the night.

Flynn took the loss (3-1) for the Bulldogs in relief. He was charged only one of the four runs scored against him. He lasted five and a third-innings, allowing three hits and two walks in his unexpected appearance.

Eagles starter Brad Schrock got the win (7-3). He lasted six and one-third innings, allowing nine hits and two walks, with six strikeouts. He gave up all seven Wingate runs, though one was unearned.

Carson-Newman advances to another elimination game tomorrow morning against second-seeded Presbyterian College. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. The winner will have to win again at 6 p.m. against the loser of the Catawba / Tusculum ballgame set to start at 2 p.m. in order to advance to Sunday’s finals of the double-elimination tournament.
