Carson-Newman Blanks Newberry 7-0

Clinton, S.C. - The Carson-Newman College softball team defeated the Indians of Newberry College 7-0 in day two of the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference softball tournament. Carson-Newman advances in the winner's bracket and will face Lenoir-Rhyne College, who defeated Wingate University 4-3, this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Newberry will play Wingate today at 2:00 p.m.

The Lady Eagles started the day hot, as they scored five runs in the first inning to take a 5-0 lead. Marci Mitchell shut-down the Indians the rest of the Way as the Lady Eagles added one more run in the third and one in the sixth to win 7-0.

Brooke Randolph who batted 4-for-4 with one run scored and Valerie Steele who batted 2-for-3 led Carson-Newman. Marci Mitchell threw a complete game allowing only five hits and striking out four Indian batters.

Jadie Coates who batted 2-for-3 led Newberry, while Katey Gault, Lisa Graham, and Katie Jacks all had one hit apiece.

Lenoir-Rhyne's Kreske Mows Down 13 in Bears Win Over Wingate

CLINTON, S.C. - Audrey Kreske struck out 13 batters as the Lenoir-Rhyne Softball team defeated the Bulldogs of Wingate University 4-3 on day two of the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament. Lenoir-Rhyne moves on to play the number one seeded Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman College at 4 p.m. in the final of the winners bracket. Wingate drops down into the elimination bracket and will face Mars Hill College at 2 p.m.

Wingate started the scoring in the top of the first when Sarah Menser homered to left field. Wingate increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third when Angela Whittaker singled to left field to drive home two Bulldog runners.

L-R closed the gap in the bottom-half of the third when Brady Horne tripled down the right line to score Brandi Mueller. Natasha Crouse followed with an infield single to drive home Horne.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, L-R captured the lead when Casey Ledford singled through the left side to drive home Horne and Kristen Kimball.

Kreske's superb pitching sealed the victory for the Bears. Kreske allowed three runs on seven hits with 13 strikeouts in the complete game effort. Five Bear batters had one hit, and Horne scored two of the four Bear runs.

The Bulldog starter, Jennifer Whited gave up four runs on five hits while striking out one and walking two. Menser finished two-for-four with two runs and an RBI, five other Wingate batters had one hit.

Wingate Rallies in Bottom of 7th to Eliminate Mars Hill

Clinton, S.C. - The Wingate University softball team eliminated Mars Hill College this afternoon from the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference softball tournament at Presbyterian College. Wingate will now go on to play Newberry College, who defeated Presbyterian 1-0, at 4:00 p.m.

Mars Hill struck first in the top of the fifth inning scoring one run after Missy Gibson singled and then scored on a double by Deanna Hinson. Wingate answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the seventh Renay Rollins doubled to lead off. After a ground-out, Carey Bumbardner singled to left, but pinch-runner Dusty Vance was gunned down at the plate for the second out of the inning. The Bulldog's Sarah Menser singled to center field to drive in the winning run.

Angela Whittaker who batted 2-for-3 and Sarah Menser who batted 1-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI led Wingate. Carey Bumgardner, Katie Wallace, and Renay Rollins all added one hit. Deanna Hinson who batted 1-for-2 with one RBI and Missy Gibson who batted 1-for-2 with one run scored led Mars Hill.

Newberry's Rhoad One-Hits Presbyterian in 1-0 Win

CLINTON, S.C. - Ashley Rhoad's one-hit complete game shutout propelled the Lady Indians of Newberry College to a 1-0 win over the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College in the elimination bracket of the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament.

Newberry will face Wingate University at approximately 4 p.m. in the next round of play in the elimination bracket. Presbyterian finished the season with a 25-29 overall record.

Rhoad allowed faced four more than the minimum while striking out five and walking two in seven innings. Newberry's only hits came in the top of the fourth. Jen Wilson's singled and then was driven home by Lisa Graham's single.

Beth Pearson picked up the loss for Presbyterian after giving up only one run on two hits with five strikeouts in seven innings.

Lenoir-Rhyne Defeats Top Seeded Carson-Newman

Clinton, S.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne College softball team defeated the top seeded Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman College this afternoon 7-1. The Bears, who are looking to three-peat in the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference softball tournament, have won the tournament the past two seasons.

Carson-Newman will face Wingate University, who defeated Newberry College, tomorrow morning in the final elimination bracket game. The winner of that game will have to beat Lenoir-Rhyne twice in a row to win the Championship.

The Bears struck first in the top of the third inning as they scored three runs on two hits and two errors. The Lady Eagles answered in the bottom half of the inning with one run on two hits and two errors to make it a 3-1 game.

L-R then blew the game open in the top of the sixth as they scored three runs on four hits including a double by Casey Ledford. The Bears then added one more run in the top of the seventh to seal their 7-1 victory.

The Bears were led by Brandi Mueller who batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI and Casey Ledford who batted 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Brady Horne, Natasha Crouse, Kristi Pfaffendorf, Elaine Seter, and Karen Reames all added one hit for the Bears.

Libby Conely who batted 2-for-4 led the Lady Eagles. Libby Seal, Valerie Steele, Brooke Randolph, Cristi Benton, and Shannon Fish all collected one hit for Carson-Newman.

Wingate Moves On with 9-1 Thumping of Newberry

CLINTON, S.C. - Wingate University defeated Newberry College 9-1 on day two of the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Wingate will play Carson-Newman in the elimination bracket final at 11 a.m. on Sat at Young Park. With the lost, Newberry finished the 2002 season with a 34-25 record overall.

In the top of the third, Wingate scored three runs to break a scoreless tie. They added two more in the fifth and four more in the sixth to put away the Lady Indians in six innings.

The Wingate starter, Katie Wallace allowed no runs on three hits with four strikeouts. She was relieved by Jennifer Whited, who gave up one run on three hits with one strikeout.
