#2 Seed Wingate Advances to SAC Women's Tennis Tourney Semifinals with 6-0 Win over #7 Newberry #5 Seed Carson-Newman Upsets #4 Seed Catawba, 5-1, in Women's Tennis Tournament Quarterfinals #2 Seed Wingate Advances to SAC Women's Tennis Tourney Semifinals with 6-0 Win over #7 Newberry CLINTON, S.C. - The #2 seeded Bulldogs of Wingate University advanced to tomorrow's semifinal round after defeating the #7 seeded Indians of Newberry College 6-0 in quarterfinal action of the 2003 Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament held at the Callaway Courts on the campus of Presbyterian College. Wingate held a 3-0 lead after doubles, but had to fight off a battle from the Indians at #1 and #3 doubles. The Bulldog team of senior Lauren Whan (Pinnacle, N.C.) and sophomore Sara King (Lilburn, Ga.) outlasted the Indian team of senior Cayci Stokes (Bishopville, S.C.) and freshman Lofton Gowin (Fort Mill, S.C.) 9-7 at #3 doubles to put the Bulldogs ahead 3-0. In singles, Wingate's senior Katy Judah (Ft. Myers, Fla.) defeated Newberry's senior Nani Marquez (Caracas, Venezuela) 6-0, 6-3 at #1 singles to give the Bulldogs a commanding 4-0 lead. At # 2 singles, Wingate's senior Allison Abel (Bogart, Ga.) defeated junior Nadja Waxenegger (Varnville, S.C.) 6-0, 6-0 while senior April Walton (Salisbury, N.C.) was victorious 6-1, 6-2 over Gown to give Wingate the victory at 6-0. Wingate advances to tomorrow's12 noon semifinal match against the winner of the #3 seed Presbyterian College/#6 seed Mars Hill College match. The Bulldogs improve to 11-7 on the season while the Indians end the season at 2-11. #2 WINGATE 6, #7 NEWBERRY 0 SINGLES RESULTS DOUBLES RESULTS RECORDS: #2 seed Wingate University 11-7; #7 Newberry College 2-11 #3 Seed Presbyterian Advances to SAC Women's Tennis Tourney Semifinals with 5-1 Win over #6 Mars Hill CLINTON, S.C. - The #3 seeded Blue Hose of Presbyterian College advanced to tomorrow's semifinal round after defeating the #6 seeded Lions of Mars Hill College 5-1 in quarterfinal action of the 2003 Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament held at the Callaway Courts on the campus of Presbyterian College. Presbyterian held a 3-0 lead after doubles winning #1 and #2 doubles by the score of 8-2 and #3 doubles at 8-3. In singles, Presbyterian's sophomore Amanda Floyd (Athens, Tenn.) defeated Mars Hill's sophomore Stefanie Pitts (Orlando, Fla.) 6-0, 6-1 at #4 singles and junior Anne Gilmore (Athens, Ga.) knocked off senior Meghan Parker (Aiken, S.C.) 6-1, 6-1 at #5 singles to give the Blue Hose the victory. The Lions picked up their lone point of the match by default at #6 singles. The #30-ranked Blue Hose advanced to tomorrow's12 noon semifinal match against #2 seed Wingate University Bulldogs. The Blue Hose improve to 16-4 on the season while the Lions end the season at 6-11. #3 PRESBYTERIAN 5, #6 MARS HILL 1 SINGLES RESULTS DOUBLES RESULTS RECORDS: #3 seed Presbyterian College (#30 nation) 16-4; #6 Mars Hill College 6-11 #5 Seed Carson-Newman Upsets #4 Seed Catawba in Women's Tennis Tournament Quarterfinals CLINTON, S.C. - The #5 seed Carson-Newman College Lady Eagles won two out of three doubles flights en route to their 5-1 upset of #4 seed Catawba College Lady Indians in quarterfinal action of the 2003 South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament held at Callaway Courts on the campus of Presbyterian College. The Lady Eagle (9-9) advance to tomorrow's semifinal match with top seed Tusculum College who received a bye to the semifinals. The match is scheduled to start at 9:00 am. Catawba ends the season at 7-13 overall. Carson-Newman, who lost to Catawba 5-4 during the regular season, picked up key wins at #1 doubles (8-6) and #3 doubles (8-4) to take a 2-1 advantage entering singles play. In singles, the Eagles' freshman Erika Bellettini (Maracay, Venezuela) topped Catawba's junior Amy Behrman (Daleville, IN) 6-4, 6-2 at #1 singles to give Carson-Newman a commanding 4-1 lead. The Lady Eagles clinched the win as sophomore Natalie Tatum (Knoxville, Tenn.) defeated senior Taryn Gordon (Mutare, Zimbabwe) 6-3, 6-2 at #3 singles. #5 CARSON-NEWMAN 5, #4 CATAWBA 1 SINGLES RESULT DOUBLES RESULT RECORDS: #5 seed Carson-Newman 9-9; #4 Catawba 7-13 |
