Men's Golf: Carson-Newman Leads After First Day

Courtesy Newberry College Sports Information Office CLINTON, S.C. - The Carson-Newman Eagles fired a one-over 577 (295-282) to take the lead after the first day of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference (SAC) men's golf tournament. The Eagles hold a four-stroke lead on Tusculum (292-289-581) and Presbyterian (285-296-581) heading into Saturday's final round. Mars Hill (295-291-586) is in fourth place followed by Lenoir-Rhyne (295-304-599), Catawba (290-310-600), Newberry (314-300-614) and Wingate (315-300-615). Presbyterian's Gavin Gillespie (Lexington, S.C.) shot a career-low 64 in the first round and finished the day in the lead with a score of 64-71-135. The 64 is a new SAC tournament record, eclipsing the 66 he shared in the 2002 tournament with Carson-Newman's Andy Lowe (Johnson City, Tenn.). Mars Hill's Shawn Walsh (Ontario, Canada) and Brian Hughes (Madison, Ohio) and Tusculum's Brent Dyson (Damascus, Va.) are tied for second place with a score of 141. Four of the Carson-Newman Eagles Matthew Cram-Smith (Perth, Australia), Tanner Davis (Kingsport, Tenn.), Clifton Lowery (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Lowe round out the Top 10. The final round of the tournament will take place on Saturday, April 26 at the Lakeside Country Club.
