ROCK HILL, S.C. - The No. 4 seed Wingate University Bulldogs defeated the No. 5 seed Mars Hill College Lady Lions 5-3 in the first round of the 2004 Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Championships held at the Memorial Courts on the campus of Winthrop University Wednesday afternoon. Mars Hill took an early 1-0 lead after freshman Whitney Stroud (Spindale, N.C.) and sophomore Rachel Barcio (Winston-Salem, N.C.) defeated WU's senior Sara King (Monroe, Ga.) and freshman Kim Wenstrand (Destin, Fla.) 8-3. Wingate came back to win at #2 and #3 doubles including Bulldogs' freshman Alexis McDaniel (Acworth, Ga.) and sophomore Erin Donovan (Lexington, S.C.) defeating Mars Hill's sophomore Jenny Rogers (Melbourne, Australia) and freshman Nancie Gruber (Bad Rappanau, Germany) 8-4 at #1 singles. In singles, Wingate pulled ahead 3-1 after sophomore Courtney Luce (Knoxville, Tenn.) defeated Stroud 6-1, 6-0 at #3 singles. The Lady Lions won at #4 singles when sophomore Jessica McFarland (Statesville, N.C.) defeated freshman Sydney Pallesen (Calgary, Alberta) 6-1, 6-0 to pull to cut the lead to 3-2. Wingate finished off the match with freshman Erika Gluckstal (Fort Myers, Fla.) defeating freshman Maranda Dellinger (Elkin, N.C.) 6-4, 6-1 at #5 singles and Wenstrand defeating Barcio 6-2, 6-4 at #6 singles. Wingate (5-10) advances to the semifinals tomorrow where they will face top seed Tusculum College at 12 noon.
