Rock Hill, S.C. - Lindsay Ettinger threw a complete game shutout allowing just three Lenoir-Rhyne College (38-16) hits to lead the Indians of Catawba College (27-27) to a 5-0 victory in game nine of the 2004 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference.

Catawba took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Ashlee Rhoades crossed the plate on a fielder's choice. The game then remained scoreless until the seventh when Catawba plated four runs to make the final score 5-0.

Shannon Handy hit a solo homerun to start the inning and then Stacey Handy singled to left field to score Jenn Mehl. Jessica Rivera then singled down the right field line to score Rhoades. Liz Corbett ended the scoring when she hit a sacrifice fly to score Stacey Handy.

Stacey Handy led the Indians going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Rivera also went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a double. Rhoades was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Ettinger improved to 17-13 on the mound for Catawba with her performance.

Karen Reames led Lenoir-Rhyne at the plate going 2-for-3 followed by Misty Bingham who went 1-for-2 at the plate. Sarah Cox took the loss (8-8) for the Bears on the mound.

The Indians advance to game 12 that will be played at Cherry Park on Friday at 2:00 p.m. They will meet No. 2 Wingate University who eliminated No. 5 Tusculum College earlier in the day.


Wingate Tops Tusculum, 10-1

Rock Hill, S.C.----Wingate University sophomores Sarah Carleton and Carrie Rountree hit home runs as the Bulldogs defeated Tusculum College 10-1 in the 2004 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament Friday afternoon at Cherry Park. The contest was called after six innings.

With the win, Wingate improves to 30-15 overall. Tusculum concludes the 2004 season 29-18 overall. The Bulldogs advance to face Catawba College in another elimination game at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs posted four runs (with two outs) in the top of the first inning. With one out, Wingate junior third baseman Carey Bumgardner walked. One out later, Carleton hit a two-run homer to left field.

Wingate junior shortstop Cameron Langston reached on an error. Rountree followed with a home run to almost the same spot as Carleton's bomb to give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added a single run in the third inning on an RBI fielder's choice by junior outfielder Amy Parmalee. Wingate tallied five runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game away. Carleton contributed a two-RBI single in the sixth frame.

Tusculum scored one run on Wingate sophomore reliever Layne Grout in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pioneer junior outfielder Laura Menchaca started the sixth inning with a walk. She moved to third on two ground outs. Menchaca scored on an RBI single by junior first baseman Pam Jones.

Carleton was two-for-three with a home run and four RBI for the Bulldogs. Rountree was two-for-three with a home run and two RBI. Wingate freshman catcher Mandy Chester added two hits for the victors. Tusculum senior shortstop Judith St. Clair was two-for-two with two singles for the Pioneers.

Wingate freshman pitcher Brittney Taylor (12-7 overall) picked up the win for the Bulldogs. Taylor hurled five shutout innings. She allowed three singles, striking out two and walking two. Tusculum sophomore pitcher Natasha Lindsey (16-10 overall) took the loss. She gave up four runs (two earned) in 1 2/3 innings of work. Lindsey gave up three hits. She struck out one and walked two.


Presbyterian Advances to Finals With 3-2 Extra-Innings Win Over Carson-Newman

Rock Hill, S.C. - No. 3 Presbyterian College (43-11) defeated No. 4 Carson- Newman College (39-11) 3-2 in extra innings to advance to the Championship game of the 2004 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament Championship Game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at Cherry Park. Jessica Peterka singled up the middle with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning to send Jamie Vining to the plate for the game winning score.

Presbyterian's Rachel Bailey scored the first run of the game in the first inning on a fielder's choice. Peterka then scored on a Carson-Newman error to give the Blue Hose a 2-0 advantage at the end of the first inning of play.

In the top of the fourth inning, Lyndsi Craig singled to left field to score Erin Rutherford to cut PC's lead to 2-1 and then the Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning when LeAndrea Johnson scored on a Blue Hose error. The game remained scoreless for the next two and a half innings until Peterka recorded her game-winning hit.

Vining and Peterka each tallied two hits apiece in the win. Vining scored a run while Peterka added a run scored and the game winning RBI. Amanda Teal went 1-for- 3 with an RBI. Megan Wheelus picked up the win (12-4) in relief for the Blue Hose. She threw the last two innings allowing no hits and struck out three Eagle batters. Samantha Slater, who started the game on the mound for PC threw the first six innings allowing only two hits and one earned run.

Erin Rutherford and Craig had the only hits for Carson-Newman. Rutherford's was a double while Craig had the team's only RBI on a single to left field. Craig took the loss (13-5) in relief for the Eagles pitching the last 6.1 innings of play.

PC will face the winner of the Carson-Newman College/Wingate University game that will be played at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Wingate eliminated Catawba College to advance in the tournament.


White's Grand Slam Propels Wingate to 8-3 Win Over Catawba

Rock Hill, S.C.----Wingate University senior Stephanie White hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the third inning, propelling the Bulldogs to an 8-3 victory over Catawba College in the 2004 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament Friday afternoon at Cherry Park.

The 2004 SAC "player of the year," White's grand slam to deep center field erased a 3-0 deficit in the third frame and gave the Bulldogs a lead they would not relinquish. With the victory, Wingate improves to 31-15 overall. Catawba concludes its 2004 campaign 28-29 overall. The Bulldogs will face Carson-Newman College Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the losers' bracket final.

White's grand slam gave Wingate a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The four-bagger was White's sixth of the season. Wingate added two more runs in the third frame, thanks to a two-run homer by sophomore catcher Carrie Rountree.

Catawba took a 3-0 lead with one run in the top of the first inning and two runs in the top of the third inning. In the first, the Indians scored one run on two hits and two Wingate errors. Catawba junior third baseman Katie Phelps plated the first run with a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the third, Catawba converted three hits and two Wingate errors into two runs. The first run of the frame scored on an error. In addition, Indian freshman third baseman Jennifer Mehl contributed an RBI single in the Catawba third.

Wingate added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when junior third baseman Carey Bumgardner smacked a two-run homer to left field. Her blast scored sophomore outfielder Grace Cunningham, who had singled with one out.

White was two-for-three with the four-bagger and four RBI. White and sophomore first baseman Sarah Carleton have seven hits each in the Food Lion SAC softball tournament. Carleton has a .583 tournament batting average to lead the tourney hitting charts. White is not too far behind with a .500 SAC tournament batting average.

Mehl and junior teammate Jessica Rivera were both three-for-four to lead the Indians at the plate. Mehl had one RBI. Catawba outhit Wingate 11-8.

Wingate freshman pitcher Brittney Taylor (13-7 overall) notched her second win of the day (and third victory in the tourney). Taylor allowed three unearned runs on 11 hits (10 singles, one doubleCatawba freshman pitcher Lindsay Ettinger (17-14 overall) took the loss. She gave up six runs (only two earned) on six hits in 2 1/3 innings of work. She struck out one and walked none. ). She struck out four and walked none.
