NEWBERRY, S.C. Carson-Newman College poured it on early with three first half goals in a 4-2 win at Newberry College Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference mens soccer action at the Newberry College Soccer Complex. The win gives the Eagles a 6-1 record, good enough for the outright title, the schools second in league history (2000). Carson-Newman is now 11-4-1 overall and is the number-four team in the NSCAA/Adidas Southeast Region Poll. Newberry drops to an even 7-7-3 record and 1-5-1 in league play this season. This is the third season in a row that Newberry has one single SAC win, which continues to be the most in school history in one season. The match went scoreless for the first 30 minutes until freshman forward Jussi Wooler (Winchester, ENGLAND) put home the first goal of the match, his second of the season, in traffic out in front. Less than six minutes later, the Eagles put home another goal when freshman forward Marius Arnsen (Bergen, NORWAY) got loose up the left side. He had to beat a couple of defenders and Newberry keeper Tim Seibert (Harrisburg, N.C.) to get the ball in the back, but put it there for his fifth goal of the year. Just 93 seconds later, junior defender Kyle Frohock (Franklin, Tenn.) launched a free kick from 25 yards out past a diving Seibert for what became the game-winner and his second of the season. The match was possession soccer for the next 30-plus minutes until the Eagles found the back of the net again on a Jason McMillan (Gold Coast, AUSTRALIA) score, number two for him from a corner kick by Bradley Cobbs (Rocky Mount, Va.). Cobbs has a team-high nine assists this season, second-best in the SAC. Newberry finally got on the board with a pair of late goals from sophomore Adam Smith (Colonial Heights, Va.). The goals were his first of the season. Junior midfielder Brandon Cockrell (Mauldin, S.C.) got an assist on each goal, with an extra assist coming from James Hammerl (Emporia, Kan.). Cockrell leads all Newberry players with five helpers this season. Carson-Newman hosts King College for Senior Day on Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Newberry hits the road for the final game of the regular season at North Greenville College Thursday at 3 p.m. |
