Catawba Advances to Semifinals With 4-0 Win Over LR DeMartini Has Seven Points in Tusculum's Win Over Wingate Newberry Upsets Presbyterian, 2-1 in Double Overtime Carson-Newman Advances to SAC Final Four With Win Over Mars Hill Catawba Advances to Semifinals With 4-0 Win Over LR SALISBURY, NC - Catawba College scored four first half goals and cruised to an opening round win in the 2003 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament at Frock Field on Tuesday night. The Indians, the tourneys third seed, advance to a Saturday semifinal date with the winner of the Presbyterian/Newberry match. The semifinals and final will be held at Newberry College in Newberry, SC. With the 4-0 win, Catawba improves to 12-5-1 on the year, while Lenoir-Rhyne ends its season at 6-9-4. Brennan Regner (Mebane, NC) scored the first of his two goals just 2:30 into the match to spark the Tribe. The senior to a cross from freshman Nathan Zuzga (Troy, MI) and headed home a shot just inside the back post. In the ninth minute, Zay-Zay Gilewala (Monrovia, LIBERIA) tallied his team leading 15th goal of the season. Catawba would add two more goals before the half hour. Regner stuck for his second in the 24th minute, marking his 12th of the season. Zuzga would close out the scoring in the 29th minute on a strike from just outside the penalty box for his 10th of the year. Catawba out shot the Bears 19-5 with Carl McMahon (Sydney, AUSTRALIA) and Matt Student (Drexel Hill, PA) being untested in net in the shutout. Tom Skora (Boca Raton, FL) had seven saves for Lenoir-Rhyne.

DeMartini got the scoring started in the 10th minute, converting a pass from sophomore midfielder Gerald Watt (Brampton, Ontario) past the Wingate goalkeeper. Wingate answered 26 seconds later when a tip from a WU throw-in led to a breakaway for junior defender Thomas Szvetitz (Valrico, Fla.) who bounced his shot off the left goal post. The Bulldogs took the lead in the 17th minute when sophomore forward Robert Dawson (Manchester, England) scored his first goal of the night. Three goals were scored in a four-minute span late in the first half. The Pioneers scored the first two, with junior forward Paul Hopkins (Portsmouth, England) scoring, and DeMartini picking up his second, heading in a cross from Watt to give TC a 3-2 lead. Wingate evened the score one minute after DeMartini's tally when Dawson knocked in a direct kick just seconds after a foul was called, and the two teams took a 3-3 score into halftime. The second half was markedly a different story, with neither team finding the back of the net for the first 25 minutes. DeMartini broke the drought, and the tie, with his third on a breakaway pass from junior Alex Eddo (Brown Hill, West Indies). Wingate suffered an own goal with 1:03 to play for the 5-3 margin. Dawson did his part on the Wingate side, scoring twice with an assist. Watt and Eddo both had two helpers for the Pioneers. Tusculum (13-3-1) moves on to face top-seeded Carson-Newman College in the semifinal round this Saturday in Newberry, S.C. Wingate ends its season at 11-8. Newberry Upsets Presbyterian, 2-1 in Double Overtime CLINTON, S.C. - Newberry College's freshman midfielder Robbie Getsinger (Charleston, S.C.) scored the game-winning goal 113th minute of the match as the #7-seeded Indians upset the #2-seeded Blue Hose of Presbyterian College 2-1 in double overtime in first round action of the 2003 Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Tuesday night at Martin Stadium. The win propels the Indians into the semifinal round this Saturday, November 8 at 1:30 pm at home against the #3 seeded Indians of Catawba College who earlier in the night defeated #6 seed Lenoir-Rhyne College 4-0. Newberry improves to 9-7-3 on the season while Presbyterian finishes the year with a 11-5-1 mark. The win is the first for the Indians in seven tries in the SAC Tournament and the program's first two goals in postseason play. PC took an early 1-0 lead as senior defender Chris Middendorf (Athens, Ga.) scored off an assist from redshirt sophomore Jeff Haigler (Columbia, S.C.) in the 33rd minute of play. The Indians controlled play for the rest of the half including outshooting the Blue Hose 6-1, but trailed 1-0 entering intermission. In the second half, Newberry evened the match at 1-1 in the 70th minute as freshman forward Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) scored off a rebounded shot from teammate junior midfielder Brandon Cockrell (Greenville, S.C.). PC dominated the shots down the stretch, outshooting Newberry 7-3 in the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net. The first overtime PC got the only scoring opportunity as senior forward Derek Knapp (Orange, Tex.) lobbed a shot over Newberry's freshman keeper Tim Siebert (Harrisburg, N.C.), but the shot missed to the right. In the second overtime, Newberry took advantage of a corner kick by Cockrell which Getsinger put home for the game-winner. In goal for the Indians, Siebert allowed one goal and stopped four shots while his counterpart, junior keeper Kevin Czar (Lilburn, Ga.) of the Blue Hose allowed two goals and stopped five shots.

The Eagles, the top-seed in the SAC tournament, improves to 13-4-1. Mars Hill, the number eight team in the tournament, ends its season at 3-13-1. Brad Cobbs (Rocky Mount, Va.) started the scoring with a goal in the seventh minute off an assist by Kyle Frohock (Franklin, Tenn.). J.B. Froland (Stavanger, Norway) scored an unassisted goal in the 15th minute as the Eagles led 2-0 at the half. Brad Collins (Vinton, Va.) found Jussi Wooler (Winchester, England) for a goal in the 55th minute. Jean Pierre Janvier (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) scored off an assist by Froland in the 77th minute and the Eagles capped the scoring with a goal by Mark Labig (Xenia, Ohio) who scored off an assist by Marius Arnesen (Bergen, Norway) in the 80th minute. |
