Carson-Newman Holds Off Pioneers to Advance to Soccer Tourney Final Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Carson-Newman defender Kyle Frohock (Franklin, Tenn.) scored both goals in the Eagles’ 2-1 victory in the first semifinal match in the Food Lion / South Atlantic Conference Tournament at the Newberry College Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon. Top-seeded Carson-Newman advances to Sunday’s 1 p.m. match against number-three Catawba College, a 3-2 winner over host and seventh-seeded Newberry in the second semifinal.

The Pioneers (13-4-1 FINAL RECORD) made a late charge in the match, with a score by Manuel Garcia (Knoxville, Tenn.), his first of the season in the 73rd minute, but Tusculum could not get another shot past Eagles keeper Tyler Baldock (Surrey, BRITISH COLUMBIA) who made a pair of saves in the match.

The Eagles (14-4-1) got on the board first late in the first half when Frohock scored on a direct kick from about 19 yards out. The lead stood to the 64th minute, when Frohock found the back of the net again on a penalty kick past Tusculum keeper J.P. Swaminathan (Brampton, Ontario, CANADA), who did make six saves, several of the incredible nature, in the contest. Frohock has four goals on the season for the Eagles.

Carson-Newman out shot Tusculum 15-12 in the match, which featured 42 fouls, seven yellow cards and a pair of red cards, one to each team.

Carson-Newman was a 3-2 victor against Catawba in the regular season match back on October 11 at Carson-Newman.

Catawba Outlasts Newberry, 3-2, to Push to SAC Tourney Final Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Catawba College’s Jason Dumond (Coppell, Texas) lofted a shot over Newberry freshman keeper Tim Seibert (Harrisburg, N.C.) in the 65th minute to break a two-all tie as number-three seeded Catawba moved past number-seven seed Newberry in the second semifinal of the Food Lion / South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament, hosted by Newberry at the Newberry College Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon.

Catawba (13-5-1) advances on to play against top-seeded Carson-Newman at 1 p.m. for Sunday’s final. The Eagles defeated Catawba 3-2 back on October 11 in the regular season match-up between the two teams.

Newberry (9-8-3 FINAL RECORD) got on the board first at home on a goal by forward Troy Pinckney (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), as he put his fourth goal of the season past keeper Carl McMahon (Sydney, AUSTRALIA) on a cross from midfielder Brandon Cockrell (Mauldin, S.C.) at the 27:17 mark.

Catawba then got a pair of goals before the half ended from forward Ross Hudgins (Poquoson, Va.). The first was a header that came 68 seconds after the Newberry score on a cross from Felipe Rubio (Miami, Fla.). Hudgins’ second goal was courtesy of a Dumond cross from the right side to a touch to the far post.

Newberry tied the match on the foot of Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.). The freshman scored Newberry’s first-ever tournament goal on Tuesday and chipped one past McMahon to knot the game at two with just under 40 minutes left to play.

Dumond’s game-winner was unassisted.

Catawba out shot Newberry 24-10, including an 11-3 margin in the second half.

Seibert ended with eight saves, while McMahon saved two shots.

Newberry finishes with the program’s first-ever winning season and first appearance in the tournament semifinals.

Catawba is looking for its third tournament crown (1990, 2001) while Carson-Newman tries to track down its first on Sunday.
