|
Courtesy Newberry College Sports Information Office NEWBERRY, S.C. Three is a magic number for the Catawba College Indians. As the third seed, the Indians won with three goals to win their third Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament title 3-1 over top-seeded Carson-Newman Sunday afternoon at the Newberry College Soccer Complex. Catawba (14-5-1) and Carson-Newman (14-5-1) played to a scoreless tie at the half in the windy, mid-50 degree weather. The Indians had just four shots at the half, while the Eagles had five. The second half was fast and furious. Catawba came out quickly with a goal eight minutes in when Kenny Crowe (Reeders, Penn.) scored on a penalty kick to get the Indians up 1-0. The pace quickened and the Eagles were able to score in traffic on the fifth goal of the year from J.B. Froland (Stavanger, NORWAY) on assists from Jason McMillan (Gold Coast, AUSTRALIA) and Marius Arnsen (Bergen, NORWAY). Just 19 seconds later, Catawbas Brennan Regner (Mebane, N.C.) scored the first of his two goals of the match off his missed shot that hit the crossbar. Regner put up an insurance goal on a breakaway from a backfield service from Kyle McAleese (Stafford, Va.) for the games final margin. Catawba keeper Carl McMahon (Sydney, AUSTRALIA) made four saves for the Indians to preserve the win. Carson-Newman keeper Tyler Baldock (Surrey, BRITISH COLUMBIA) made three saves for the match. Catawba took 13 shots in the second half to Carson-Newmans 11, giving the Indians a 17-16 margin overall. Regner was named tournament MVP for his performance in the final game. Both teams now await word on a potential NCAA Division II playoff berth. |
