GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Dr. Seuss and the national past time went hand in hand as the Tusculum College baseball team visited East View Elementary School in conjunction with "Read Across America Day." Several members of the Pioneer baseball team visited and read to students at East View from selections by Dr. Seuss, including the popular "Green Eggs and Ham." Read Across America Day --- celebrated annually on Dr. Seuss's birthday, is a program of the National Education Association (NEA) now in its seventh year. The program generates enthusiasm for reading nationwide and focuses the countrys attention on how important it is to motivate children to read. This years very special celebration coincides with the 100th anniversary of Dr. Seusss birth! "This was a great experience for all involved," said Tusculum head coach Doug Jones. "Our young men enjoyed meeting and reading to the kids. Giving back to the community is an important part our mission at Tusculum College and we are very appreciative to the faculty and students of East View for having us." Players also read from other selections to the students while answering variety of questions about themselves. Some of the most interesting questions were for All-American third baseman Guy O'Connell, a senior from Perth, Australia, including, "have you ever met the Crocodile Hunter" and "have you ever boxed a kangaroo?" |
