JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears won their first outright South Atlantic Conference (SAC) softball championship with a two game sweep of the Lady Eagles Saturday afternoon at the C-N Softball Complex. The Bears were co-champs of the SAC in 2000 with Carson-Newman but claimed their first solo title with 3-0 and 3-1 wins over the Lady Eagles. The Bears swept the doubleheader behind the play of Alexis Kreske (Miami, Fla.) who turned in a dominating pitching performance in game one and then helped her own cause by going three-for-four with two RBI and two doubles in the second game. Kreske picked up the win in both games as she improves her record to 20-5. Kreske gave up only two hits in the first game and struck out 11 batters as the Bears won 3-0. A double by Brandi Muller (La Porte, Texas) brought two runs home in the third inning as Karen Reames (Laurens, S.C.) and Misty Bingham (Tega Cay, S.C.) both scored. The Bears added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Bingham doubled to center field and Kreske brought her home with a sacrifice fly to center field. For Carson-Newman, Haley Allen (Newport, Tenn.) smacked a triple to left field and Kim Thorne (Dalton, Ga.) singled up the middle for the Lady Eagles only two hits in the game. Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Kreske picked up her first RBI of the game with a single to left field that plated Reames. The Lady Eagles tied the score at 1-1 when LeAndrea Johnson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Lisa Rogers (Rossville, Ga.). Kreske started the fourth inning with a double to centerfield. Brooke Starnes (Conover, N.C.) doubled to center field to bring Kreske home to make it 2-1. For the second straight game, the Bears would add an insurance run in the seventh inning. Brady Horne (Decatur, Ga.) singled to left field and scored on a double by Kreske to produce the 3-1 final. The Bears complete the regular season with a 35-14 overall record and 10-4 conference mark. They will be the top seed in next weeks Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Carson-Newman falls to 35-10, 6-6 in conference play. They complete their regular season schedule tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at Mars Hill at 1 p.m. |
