Carson-Newman Finishes Sixth, Presbyterian Seventh in NCAA Men's Golf Super Regional

WILSON, N.C.- The Carson-Newman Eagles golf team finished in sixth place with a score of 302-300-602 in the NCAA Division II Super Regional played at the Wilson Country Club. Presbyterian College shot an a final round score of 305 to finish with a two-day score of 609 and place seventh.

The Eagles improved their score on day two of the event, just as they have done in every tournament this season. C-N cut two strokes off the overall score and went from 302 to 300 in their final tournament of the year. The Eagles complete the most successful season in school history. Carson-Newman won its first South Atlantic Conference golf championship in 2004 and was ranked in the Golf Stat Top 25 the entire season.

Clifton Lowry (Knoxville, Tenn.) had the best showing for the Eagles as he shot a two-over 74 to finish tied for 14th with a score of 75-74-149. Lowery shaved one stroke off his round from yesterday, thanks in part to five birdies, four of which came on the back nine holes of 10, 11, 12 and 14.

Blake Houser (Kingsport, Tenn.) had a successful round on Wednesday as well as he shot a two-over 74 to finish tied for 23rd place with a score of 78-74-152. Houser jumped 11 places in the final standings with his round of 74 on Wednesday. He had three birdies in his final round, two of which came on the back nine.

Tanner Davis (Kingsport, Tenn.) finished tied for 26th place with an overall score of 77-76-153. Matthew Cram-Smith (Perth, Australia) finished tied for 20th place with a score of 74-76-150 and Josh Coley (Chattanooga, Tenn.) rounded out the scoring with a final count of 76-80-156 to tie for 34th place.

USC-Aiken led after the first day of the Super Regional and maintained their lead to win by eight strokes over Kennesaw State. Armstrong Atlantic was third followed by Columbus State, Georgia College, Carson-Newman, Presbyterian and Francis Marion.

The Blue Hose were led by senior Gavin Gillespie (Lexington, S.C.) who finished tied for 14th with a two-round score of 149 included an even par 72 in the final round. Senior Patrick Mitchell (Beaufort, S.C.) and freshman Tyler Croxton (Laurens, S.C.) each shot 154 to finish tied for 28th.

Tusculum College's Sasha Catron carded an even par 72 to finish with a two-day tally of 149 to tie for 14th place following final round action of the 2004 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Southeast Region Championship. The two-day, 36-hole tournament was held at the 6,774-yard, par 72 Wilson Country Club and hosted by Barton College.

Catron, a sophomore from Greeneville, Tenn., shot two-under par on his inward nine, including an eagle on the par-five 12th hole. Catron wraps up a solid season where he garnered All-South Atlantic Conference First Team honors and advanced to the NCAA Regional for a second consecutive year.

Catron finishes with an individual scoring average of 75.32 strokes per round, which is the fifth best in school history.

Lenoir-Rhyne College's Bum Young Ko finished in a tie for 28th after firing a 73-81-154.

Catawba College's Steve Harvey shot an 83-78-161 and finished in a tie for 44th.
