Florida Southern Runs Through Catawba in South Regional Baseball Tournament, Indians Later Eliminated by Rollins
May 14, 2004

Florida Southern 9, Catawba 0
WINTER PARK, Fla. – Florida Southern second baseman Matt Mercurio went 2-for-5 with a home run and five runs batted in and pitcher Ryan Thompson fanned 11 as Florida Southern advanced to Championship Round of the NCAA II South Regional with a 9-0 win over Catawba at Alfond Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Indians (42-16) will face Rollins in an elimination game on Friday night, while the Moccasins (35-20-1) awaits the winner of that contest to be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Mocs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI-double by first baseman Fred Popp and a run-scoring single by catcher Jeff Howell. FSC added took a 5-0 lead after a three-run fourth inning highlighted by a two-run blast over the center field fence by designated hitter Paul Ryan. Mercurio gave Southern a 6-0 lead in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly that plated center fielder Gilbert Martinez. Mercurio put his final touch on the game in the bottom of the eighth with a three-run home run to left field, giving the Mocs the 9-0 win.

Florida Southern's Thompson (6-6) went eight innings, giving up seven hits, one walk to go along with the 11 strikeouts. Jason Mack gave up a hit, a walk and struck out one batter in one inning of relief. Catawba hurler Matt Fairweather (9-3) threw seven innings, giving up 10 hits, six runs, two walks and five strikeouts. Jeff Abdelnour gave up three hits and three runs in an inning of relief.

Mercurio, Geoff Strickland, Matt Joyce, and Popp had two hits a piece for the Mocs. Mark Smith, Matt Smith, Spence Southard and Jimbo Davis each registered two hits for the Indians.

Rollins 6, Catawba 5
WINTER PARK, Fla. – Rollins held a comfortable 5-1 lead after their half of the seventh, but had to hold off a charging Catawba team to post a 6-5 victory and advance to the finals of the NCAA Division II South Region Championship Tournament. The Indians had the tying run on the paths in each of the final two innings, but some clutch pitching allowed the Tars to hold on for the victory.

Toby Rice and Tito Alfonso each banged out three hits to pace the Rollins (44-10) offense with Alfonso scoring twice and Rice batting in a run. Eduardo Chile (8-2) had a dazzling performance on the hill for the Tars, allowing just one earned run and scattering eight hits while fanning eight in six and a third innings of work. Nick Manson recorded his fifth save of the season, throwing the final one and two thirds innings without allowing a hit.

Spence Southard had a huge night, going 3-4 with three RBI and three runs scored to lead the Catawba (41-17) bats. Matt Smith knocked out two hits with Aaron Rimer batting in a run. Zack Snyder suffered the loss, surrendering five runs, one earned, and seven hits in seven innings of work.

The Indians jumped ahead early, with a Southard RBI in the bottom of the first to make the score 1-0. The Rollins bats came around in the fourth when Gene Howard scored after an error, followed by an RBI double from Nick Manson and an RBI single from Rice to put the hosts up 3-1. Alfonso then gave the Tars an insurance run in the fifth, taking advantage of an Indians miscue to make the score 4-1. Another Rollins score followed in the seventh on a Luis Dieguez sac fly before Catawba came back in their half of the inning on a Rimer RBI single, putting the score at 5-2.

Rollins manufactured an insurance run in the eighth when Halbert scored on a Garrett Preisser sac fly. The Indians gave it one last shot, belting back to back singles, followed by a two RBI double by Southard to make the score 6-4. Southard then brought Catawba within one when he crossed the plate after a Rollins error, but Manson fanned the last two batters of the inning to preserve the Tars lead and eventual victory.

Top seeded Rollins moves on to play third seeded Florida Southern in the NCAA Division II South Region championship game. The first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Alfond Stadium in Winter Park.
