CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College officials announced today that Paul Maxwell has resigned as head coach of the college's men's tennis program.

Maxwell, who just completed his fourth season at the helm of the men's program, will take over as head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs at the University of North Alabama. Maxwell is no stranger to the Florence, Alabama institution as he got his start in coaching while serving as an assistant coach for the Lions.

"This was the toughest decision that I have ever had to make," said Maxwell. "The past four years have been great and I can only thank PC for giving me this opportunity. The players that have worked so hard for me will obviously be what I miss the most. It will be hard to find a better quality group of young men than what I have had here."

"I am happy for Paul and Amy as they leave PC to pursue other opportunities that they believe are best for their careers and family," said Director of Athletics, Dr. Bee Carlton. "Coach Maxwell has done an outstanding job with our men's tennis program. He has recruited excellent student-athletes and has led PC's men's tennis program to being one of the most respected teams in the nation. His players are fierce competitors and are outstanding students and members of the student body. As PC's NCAA compliance coordinator, Coach Maxwell has done a masterful job maintaining the attention to detail necessary to ensure that all our athletes and programs meet NCAA standards. Paul has accomplished a great deal during his time at PC and we will miss him a lot, he will be hard to replace."

During his tenure with the Blue Hose, Maxwell compiled a 58-36 overall record including a 22-2 mark in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular season action that includes three undefeated SAC regular titles. In addition, he has led the program to four straight trips to the NCAA regionals including this year's second round berth after defeating Florida Southern College 6-0 in the opening round.

He has coached 16 student-athletes that earned All-South Atlantic Conference honors as well as two SAC Player of the Year selections and three SAC Freshman of the Year selections. Maxwell has been named SAC Coach of the Year three times as head coach of the Blue Hose.

This past fall, Maxwell led the Blue Hose to an 18-4 overall record, an undefeated SAC regular season title (6-0), a #17 national ranking, and a second round berth in the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament.

Carlton said a search will begin immediately for a replacement.
