JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The third-ranked Carson-Newman Eagles’ soccer team wrapped up the 2004 regular season on Saturday with a 6-0 win over the visiting Newberry Indians.

The Eagles finish the regular season with a 15-0-1 overall record and win their second consecutive South Atlantic Conference (SAC) championship as they post a 6-0-1 record in conference play. The Eagles will be the top seed in next week’s SAC Tournament and will host a home match in the first round. The Indians fall to 9-6-2, 3-3-1.

After Newberry accidentally poked in a goal in front on the Carson-Newman net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead, Jussi Wooler (Winchester, England) took an assist from Kyle Frohock (Franklin, Tenn.) and scored on a header in front of the goal. The final goal of the first half would come when Marius Arnesen (Bergen, Norway) put in a diving kick from Carlos Maqueda (Knoxville, Tenn.) at the 35:13 mark.

Maqueda started the second half with a bang as he scored two consecutive goals. His first was off an assist by Richard Moodie (Stenhousmuir, Scotland) in the 60th minute and he scored on a rebound shot in the 79th minute. The final goal of the match came with 42 seconds left when Brad Collins (Vinton, Va.) knocked in a header in front of the goal.

The Eagles out-shot Newberry 22-3 and had eight corner kicks compared to none for the Indians.
