Courtesy Carson-Newman College Sports Information Office JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. Sophomore running back Rayvon Howard (Brewton, Ala.) rushed for a game-high 229 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the #14 Carson-Newman Eagles to a 41-10 win over 22nd-ranked Wingate Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Eagles clinch the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) title outright, their 18th conference championship under 25-year head coach Ken Sparks. The Eagles improve to 8-3, 6-1 in the conference and will await the announcement of pairings for the NCAA Division II playoffs which will be released Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs complete one of the best seasons in school history as they finish 8-3, 4-3 in the SAC. Howard led an Eagles ground game that had 487 yards and finished the day with 539 yards of total offense. Howard scored touchdowns of 70, 58, 46 and six yards on the day. The Eagles defense was stellar as they held the Bulldogs to 261 yards of total offense including only 36 rushing yards. The C-N defense finished the game with five sacks. The Bulldogs struck first as Lamar Brown (Laurinburg, N.C) caught a four-yard pass from quarterback Anthony Metzelaars (Charlotte, N.C.) at the 10:31 mark of the first quarter. The Eagles would respond with a 46-yard run for a score by Howard. The extra point was no good. After Chris Brewer (Weddington, N.C.) booted a 21-yard field goal for the Bulldogs, the Eagles went back on top 13-10 when Howard scored on a six-yard touchdown with six seconds remaining in the first quarter. The only score in the second quarter would be produced by J.J. Chatmon (Cartersville, Ga.) when he gave the Eagles a 20-10 lead with a 21-yard touchdown run at the 3:59 mark of the second quarter. Howard would put the game away in the third quarter as he scored on touchdown runs of 70 and 58 yards. The Eagles would cap the scoring in the fourth quarter when Chatmon scored from one yard out to give C-N a 41-10 win. |
