Joey KingROCK HILL, SC – Carson-Newman backup quarterback Joey King was named the South Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete Award recipient for football, the league announced today.

King, a junior from Cedartown, Ga., has a 3.42 GPA as a Physical Education major. He has been a member of the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and Carson-Newman Dean’s List every semester.

On the field, King has seen limited time this season due to an injury, appearing in just five games and completing seven of nine passes for 119 yards and one touchdown. He threw for 128 yards and one touchdown last year, appearing in all 13 games for the Eagles.

King is active in campus and community endeavors. He was honored by the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America as a 2004 “Peach of an Athlete” and was one of just two Division II football players named to the Good Works Team by the American Football Coaches Association last year.

King has worked with Habitat for Humanity; the Best Buddies program, which works with mentally-challenged adults; the Jefferson County/East Tennessee Special Olympics and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Knoxville. King also serves on the South Atlantic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Council, an officer with the Carson-Newman Fellowship of Christian Athletes and spent last summer on a mission trip working with inner-city youth in Missouri.

The South Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete Award is presented to one athlete from each of the conference's 14 sport programs and represents a combination of athletic skill, academic achievement and participation in community service and leadership.

One final note, King was featured in a "SAC Spotlight" article that appeared earlier this fall.
