Brindell, Catawba's Haverty Take Top South Atlantic Conference Golf

ROCK HILL, SC Presbyterian College standout freshman Hugh Morrison, who led the South Atlantic Conference in scoring in his debut season, was named the SACs Mens Golf Co-Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, while teammate Jimi Brindell, who was second in the league in scoring, was also named Co-Player of the Year. Catawba College junior Paige Haverty was named Womens Golf Player of the Year for the third year in a row. Morrison (Macon, GA), averaged a league-best 74.76 over 17 rounds. His best finish was a tie for second at the Richard Rendleman Invitational. He had two other top-10 finishes. Brindell, a junior from Tequesta, FL, was second in the league in scoring average at 75.53. He also finished tied for second at the Richard Rendleman Invitational and had two other top-10 finishes. The Blue Hose pair were among three Presbyterian players named to the All-Conference Team. Ben Karns was a second-team selection. Carson-Newman also had three on the All-Conference Team. Haverty (Greenville, NC) led the SAC in scoring with an average of 77.79. She had the lowest round of the season with a 69 at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational in October, matching the lowest womens golf round in SAC history. She was the medallist at four events this year. Newberry Colleges Eva Cormann was named Womens Golf Freshman of the Year. The freshman from Laaber, Germany averaged 81.23. She was the medallist at the J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Tournament. Lenoir-Rhyne College led the way with four All-Conference selections. Catawba, Newberry and Tusculum each placed two representatives on the Womens All-Conference Team. Presbyterian College coach Tommy Addison was recognized as Mens Golf Coach of the Year. He wins the award for the fourth time in his career. Brian Bailie of Lenoir-Rhyne College was named SAC Womens Golf Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. Newberry Colleges Jack Easterby was presented the South Atlantic Conference Mens Golf Scholar Athlete Award. Easterby, a senior from Columbia, SC, has a 3.5384 grade point average as a physical education/sports management major. Easterby is a four-year letterwinner in golf and two-year captain. He holds two school records lowest nine holes (33) and 18 holes (70). He was also a two-year member of the mens basketball team. He has been on the Newberry College Deans List for five consecutive semesters and is a member of Newberrys Blue Key honor fraternity. In the community, Easterby serves as a tutor for children at Prosperity Riker Elementary School, is president of the Newberry Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is a speaker on the statewide FCA circuit. He is president of the Newberry Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Newberry Physical Education Majors Club. He is a member of the Newberry Christian Council and has worked as a director at a inner-city basketball camp for underprivileged children in Columbia. Wingate Universitys Martina Moo Young received the South Atlantic Conferences Womens Golf Scholar Athlete Award, winning the award for the second year in a row. A junior from Mt. Pleasant, N.C., she has a 3.797 GPA as a management major. Young averaged 90.17 this season and was All-Conference in 2003 and 2004. She has been named to the Wingate University Presidents List two times and the Deans List three times. In the community, Young is a member of the Wingate Student-Athlete Advisory Council and is a Resident Assistant in the Alumni Dorm.
