NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College athletic department announced today the hiring of Darby Sligh as head women's golf coach. Sligh, originally from North Augusta, returns to the Palmetto State after a successful varsity career at the University of Alabama.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to coach here at Newberry," Sligh said. "I feel like, with the returning team, we have a good chance to win the conference title and advance to regionals. I can't wait to get the season started."

An All-SEC second team selection as a junior, Sligh was sidelined by an injury during her senior season and was able to travel with the team in a student assistant's role. Her involvement in Division I competition coupled with her experience at Augusta National Golf Club and in directing juniors tournaments made her a natural selection for the position.

As a player, Sligh had nine top 10 finishes, and won medalist honors at the UA-Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate and Ross Resorts Invitational in 2003. She was a finalist in the voting for the Paul W. Bryant Student Athlete Award. Sligh served as captain during her last three seasons, and was women's golf's delegate to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Sligh's dedication in the classroom was unwavering, graduating cum laude in May 2005 with a bachelor's degree in commerce and business administration. She was honored as the Southeastern Conference women's golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2004, and earned Academic All-SEC merit three years. Three times she was named to the National Golf Coaches' Association's All-American Scholar Team.
