WACO, TX -Presbyterian College football player Jay Freeman and Carson-Newman quarterback Joey King have been selected to the 2005 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team announced today by the AFCA.
The two 11-man teams, a Division I-A team and a combined team from Divisions I-AA, II, III and the NAIA, honor players for their dedication and commitment to community service. From 1992-1996, the Good Works Team was selected by the College Football Association. When the CFA disbanded in 1997, the AFCA began selecting the teams. Freeman, a junior running back at Presbyterian College, also is a volunteer firefighter in Clinton, S.C. and his hometown of Walhalla and is on call when he is not in class or at practice. He is also in training to be a first responder in both fire departments. Freeman is also a member of the Committee on Multicultural Concerns on campus, which was established to foster positive relations among the diverse student population. He becomes the first Blue Hose player to earn this award.
This is the second time King (Cedartown, Ga.) has received the honor as he was a member of the Good Works Team in 2003. King is active in the community as he helped build houses for Jefferson County Habitat for Humanity, is active in Real Men Read program, which encourages local elementary and middle school students to become more active in their reading skills and he worked with a local food distribution company to deliver food to disadvantaged families in the Jefferson County area. The Cedartown, Georgia native aided in construction of a nature trail at a Tennessee Valley Authority facility and delivered meals to shut-ins during Thanksgiving. He has worked with and spoken at many churches in the East Tennessee area and has served on various summer mission trips and summer youth camps. King is an officer with the Carson-Newman Fellowship of Christian Athletes. King has twice been honored by the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America as a Peach of an Athlete which recognizes academic, athletic and community accomplishments. He was selected the 2004 South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Football Scholar Athlete of the Year and is a member of the SAC Student-Athlete Advisory Council. "It never ceases to amaze me to see the contributions student-athletes make to their communities," AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. "Often times, these young men are better known for the good things they do on the field. The AFCA is proud to recognize these student-athletes for the good things they do in their communities." Nominations were submitted to the AFCA by the college sports information departments. Nominees have to be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or involved in other community service activities. Candidates have to display sincere concern and reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations with which they are involved. Athletic ability is not a criteria. 2005 AFCA Good Works Teams® |
