CARSON-NEWMAN – The No. 6 Carson-Newman Eagles rolled up 440 offensive yards on their way to a 71-9 blowout of the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears in the Third Annual Smoky Mountain Classic at Burchfield Memorial Stadium in Sevierville Thursday night.The Eagles (3-0) ran for 353 yards and seven touchdowns in the win. The Golden Bears (0-4) only gained 67 yards in the first three quarters and finished with 150 yards on the night ... Deonte Bolden pilfered a Joey Jude pass on the first play from scrimmage and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown with 14:50 remaining in the first quarter. Bolden’s score set the tone for a 34-0 first quarter advantage and the Eagles took a comfortable 37-7 lead heading into the locker room at halftime ... J. J. Chatmon followed Bolden’s score with touchdown runs of three and two yards to give the Eagles a 21-0 lead with 9:48 remaining in the first quarter ... Less than two minutes later Kevin Washington blocked a West Virginia Tech punt and returned it 34 yards to pay dirt. Brandon Mott connected on all four extra-point kicks of the night ... With 4:44 left in the first quarter, Roniae Maye made the most of his only carry in the game with a 41-yard dash to the end zone ... The Eagles opened the second quarter with a nine-play scoring drive resulting in a Barrett Hedges 22-yard field goal to increase the advantage to 37-0. After a Carson-Newman fumble, Tech’s Rashad Smith punched in a two-yard run for the Golden Bears to finish up a five-play 21-yard drive ... The Eagles opened the third quarter with a glimpse into the future. Freshman quarterback Alex Rouse hooked up with freshman wide receiver Tyler Brown for a 50-yard touchdown, the first score in an Eagle uniform for both players. Aubrey Ingham added the point-after kick. Caleb Sorrels powered ahead for a two-yard touchdown, capping off a five-play 31-yard drive with 9:20 to play in the third quarter ... Tyler Wynn wrapped up the third quarter scoring with a 23-yard dash less than four minutes later and Ingham’s kick pushed the tally to 57-7. Wynn punched in a one-yard score to start the fourth quarter and Clarence Goins added a 23-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Hedges and Ingham nailed point-after kicks to make the score 71-7 ... The Golden Bears blocked a punt at the five-yard line and the ball trickled out of the end zone for a safety, setting the final tally at 71-9 ... The Eagles return to the gridiron Sept. 24 as the open South Atlantic Conference play at Mars Hill at 1:30 p.m.

CATAWBA - Catawba fell in overtime to Indiana, PA, 19-16 on Saturday at Shuford Stadium ... The 13th-ranked Indians led most of the game, but saw IUP tie the contest midway through the final quarter and win with a touchdown on its OT possession ... Catawba had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Cory Darnell came up just short on a 51-yard field goal attempt on the final play ... Catawba got a field goal by Rush Rollins, his third of the day, on its overtime possession before IUP converted from 20 yards out on third down to win the game ... It marked the Tribe’s first overtime game since playing two in the 2001 season ... Catawba split those games, losing 40-34 in double overtime at Carson-Newman and topping Valdosta State 37-34 in the DII playoffs ... The Indians are now 2-3 in OT games and 0-2 in OT games at Shuford Stadium, falling to Presbyterian 54-48 in triple overtime in 1989 ... Kory Fisher led Catawba’s offense on Saturday, running for 136 yards on 30 carries ... Brad Roach scored the lone Tribe touchdown on a six-yard run in the first quarter ... Rod Tenor made four catches for 58 yards ... Charles Morman record his third interception of the season, while Lester Sconyers made 11 tackles on defense ... Fisher now has 502 yards in four games this season, nearly halfway to the school record of 1,020 ... Catawba will open conference play this weekend at Presbyterian ... The Tribe has won six straight over PC, but the last two meetings have come down to the final plays.

LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne College Football Team (2-1) moved back over .500 with a 16-9 win over Davidson College Saturday evening at Richardson Field in Davidson, N.C. … The Bears, winners of their first two road games of the season for the first time since 1991, held the Wildcats without a touchdown in the second straight contest between the two schools (L-R defeated Davidson, 26-3, last year) … On the last play of the game from the Lenoir-Rhyne five-yard line, a Davidson pass fell incomplete and the Bears were able to hold on for the win … After the senior wideout Christopher Winford scored on a 20-yard run just 62 seconds into the game off a Wildcat turnover, the teams traded field goals the rest of the way with each squad kicking three … Winford, a native of Mooresville, North Carolina, had an outstanding all-around game for the Bears, finishing with a game-high 111 yards receiving on eight receptions to go along with 52 yards rushing on three carries and a score … The All-SAC return specialist also had 37 and 23 yards on punt and kickoff returns, respectively … On defense, the Bears did give up 351 yards of total offense but kept the Wildcats out of the end zone and were led by senior preseason All-American linebacker Tim Clarke, who tallied a game-high 12 tackles … Junior defensive back Rian Jefferson added six tackles and blocked a field goal while sophomore placekicker Andrew Coln went three-for-four on field goal attempts including a 44-yarder in the fourth quarter to push the Bears lead back to a touchdown … Winford, who has scored a touchdown in every game this year, has thrown, caught or returned 14 touchdowns in the team’s last 15 games … Winford jumped up to seventh all-time on Lenoir-Rhyne’s reception list with 109 and fourth on kickoff return yardage with 1,183 yards … Coln is now seventh all-time on the L-R’s scoring list for kickers with 75 points while senior quarterback Kurtis Koester moved into sixth-place in completions with 187 … Lenoir-Rhyne opens South Atlantic Conference play with a trip to Newberry, South Carolina, to take on the Indians of Newberry College this Saturday at 7 p.m. … The contest is for the Bishops’ Trophy, the trophy that marks the match up between the two Lutheran Schools … Started in 1987, the Bears’ lead the Bishops’ Tropy series, 11-7 and lead the all-time series with Newberry, 39-25-7 … Lenoir-Rhyne will also be looking to start the season 3-1 for the first time since 2002.

MARS HILL - The Lions (1-2) snapped a two-game skid by defeating The University of the Cumberland’s (2-1) 33-10 Saturday night in Meares Stadium … MHC rushed for 316 yards in the win … Cumberland is ranked ninth in the NAIA national poll … Brandon Sims put the Lions on the board with 10:19 left in the first quarter on a 26-yard run … MHC missed the PAT kick and the Lions led 6-0 … Cumberland took a 7-6 lead at the 5:42 mark in the first frame when Larry Hay hit Lawrence McGee on a 35-yard scoring strike … Then with 15 ticks left in the opening quarter, Sean Mounts kicked a 21-yard field goal to extend the Patriots advantage to 10-6 … The second quarter was scoreless and the teams took that score into the locker room at halftime … Sims put the Lions up for good with 11:06 left in the third stanza on a five-yard scamper … Craig Williams PAT kick was good and MHC led 13-10 … George Washington gave MHC a 19-10 lead with six seconds left in the third frame after crossing the goal line after a four-yard rush … Once again MHC missed the PAT kick … Antione Jones who averaged 8.4 yards per carry on the night ran in from three yards out to extend the Lions advantage to 25-10 … Williams hit the ensuing PAT kick and MHC enjoyed a 26-10 advantage with 10:10 remaining in regulation … Kendrick Johnson scored his first touchdown as a Lion with 2:24 left in the contest on a four-yard rush … Zack Rome nailed the PAT kick that sealed the 33-10 victory … Jones led MHC with 142 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown … Sims followed Jones rushing for 78 yards and two scores and passing for 134 yards completing 8-of-15 pass attempts … Anrae Fevrier was all over the field … The senior defensive end made 14 total tackles (8 solo), a tackles-for-loss, a sack for a loss of nine yards and a quarterback hurry … Nathaniel Smith and Jeremy Stewart also had solid performances for MHC ... The duo recorded 11 and 10 tackles in the win, respectively … The Lions defense played well again tonight. MHC allowed Cumberland only 262 total yards and only 161 yards on the ground … Chris Cromer had a great night punting for the second consecutive game … He booted three punts for a 48.3 yard average and placed one inside the 20 … His long on the night was 51 yards … His three punts pinned the Patriots back to their 23, 21 and 14 yardline, respectively ... As a unit the Lions netted 49.7 yards per punt … MHC will host Carson-Newman College on Saturday, September 24 … The Eagles are the No. 6 ranked team in NCAA Division II … Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

NEWBERRY - The Newberry Indians had their second off week of the season. They open conference play this week at home, hosting the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears in the annual battle for the Bishop's Trophy.

PRESBYTERIAN - Presbyterian College suffered their first loss of the 2005 season at the hands of NCAA I-AA Elon University 34-19 this past Saturday. The 3-1 start for the Blue Hose ties their best start in program history since the 1979 season. PC led 9-7 at the half and entered the fourth quarter trailing 10-9. Elon outscored the Blue Hose 24-10 in the final quarter to secure the 34-19 victory ... PC senior quarterback Zack Ellis completed 24-of-47 passes for a season-high 303 yards and one touchdown versus the Phoenix. Ellis did throw his first two interceptions of the season as well Saturday, but also scored his first rushing touchdown of the season to put PC ahead 6-0. In his first four starts of the 2005 season, Ellis has thrown for 945 yards and 12 TD’s and two interceptions on 82-of-141 completions (58.2 percent). He has a pass efficiency rating of 139.7. On Saturday Ellis completed passes to five different receivers ... Defensively, the Blue Hose are allowing only 13.2 points per game this season. Opponents have scored only 16 points in the first three quarters. PC allowed 24 points to the Phoenix on Saturday in the first quarter ... The Blue Hose currently hold a +6 turnover margin including forcing five interceptions and recovering seven fumbles ... Redshirt junior running back Corey Fidler (Savannah, Ga.) rushed for 47 yards on 14 carries this past Saturday ... Junior wideout Chris Pope (Ninety-Six, S.C.) caught a career-best 10 passes for a career-high 134 yards including a 44-yard reception on Saturday. Pope is tied for second on the team in receptions (19) and is second overall in receiving yards (261). Pope leads in the team in all-purpose yards at 83.0 yards per game ... Sophomore wideout Justin Durant (Florence, S.C.) continued his solid play this season versus the Phoenix. Durant caught six passes for 90 yards and one TD. Durant leads the Blue Hose receiving corps with 22 receptions for 301 yards and six TD’s. He also leads the team in scoring (9.0 pts/gm) and is second in all-purpose yards (75.2 yds/gm) ... Redshirt sophomore kicker Stuart Mull (Morganton, N.C.) averaged 40.2 yards per punt versus Elon including two punts downed inside the 20-yardline and two punts were 52 yards. For the season, Mull is averaging 40.8 yards per punt and of his 21 attempts, eight have been downed inside the 20-yardline, three were touchbacks, and two were fair catches ... Freshman cornerback Antoine Carter (Lawrenceville, Ga.), redshirt defense tackle David Dunagan (Gainesville, Ga.), and redshirt sophomore safety Kevin Molony (Edgefield, S.C.) led the Blue Hose with eight total stops apiece ... Senior defense end Nick Willis (Saluda, S.C.) had another big game versus the Phoenix. Willis tallied four total stops, one tackle for loss (-10), one sack (-10), and forced one fumble ... Presbyterian College (3-1) opens the South Atlantic Conference regular season this Saturday, September 24 as they host the Indians of Catawba College at 1:30 pm.

TUSCULUM - Phillip McGee’s touchdown with 40.6 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner in Tusculum’s 20-14 road win at NCAA Southeast Region opponent Miles College… It was the first meeting ever between the Pioneers and Golden Bears and TC’s third win over a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) opponent in as many tries… Tusculum (2-1) limited Miles to 208 yards offensively, including 57 rushing yards… The Pioneers also forced three turnovers, while only committing one miscue to improve its turnover margin to +8 on the year… Jamichael Caldwell led the TC offense making six receptions for a career-best 166 yards, the fifth best receiving tally in school history… Caldwell got TC on the scoreboard first when he hauled in a 14-yard touchdown from Cody Baugh in the first quarter… Caldwell set up Tusculum’s winning score when he posted a 55-yard reception in the final minutes of the game, moving the Pioneers to the MC 10… Preseason All-American Shawn Harris led Tusculum with 11 tackles, including two for loss and a sack… Harris is fourth all-time at Tusculum in career sacks (15) and career tackles for loss (27)… Chris Mosley continues to close in on 1,000 career rushing yards… Mosley needs just 52 yards rushing to eclipse that mark, following his 28-yard carry on a fake punt in Saturday’s win at Miles… Since 2000, Tusculum is 17-4 in non-conference games… Since 1927, the Pioneers are 11-17-1 in games following a bye week, including 3-1 during the Coach Frankie DeBusk era… Coach DeBusk posted his 46 career win at Tusculum on Saturday as he is already the Pioneers’ all-time winningest coach and the eighth most wins in SAC history… Tusculum will host Wingate University this week in the conference opener for both teams… It will be the 10th meeting between Tusculum and Wingate with the Bulldogs holding a 5-4 advantage in a series that began in1996… This week will also be Tusculum’s homecoming game… Since 1936, the Pioneers are 8-14 in homecoming games, but have won their last five contests playing in front of the alumni… This week will also mark the third time that Wingate has been TC’s homecoming foe (1998, 2001).

WINGATE - Wingate University did not play last week. The Bulldogs open SAC play at Tusculum College Saturday. Wingate leads the series between the two schools 5-4. The Bulldogs won the first four meetings between the two schools, while the Pioneers have won four of the last five contests ... In 2004, Wingate cornerback David Jones intercepted two fourth-quarter passes to lead the Bulldogs to a 29-24 South Atlantic Conference home football victory over number 24 Tusculum on September 25. For his efforts, Jones earned his first-ever SAC Defensive Player of the Week award ... Jones’ first pick set up the go-ahead score. He returned his second interception 42 yards for a touchdown to give the hosts a 12-point lead with 4:52 to play. In the fourth quarter, Wingate scored 19 points to take the come-from-behind league win.
