ROCK
HILL, SC Tyler Baldock, who helped Carson-Newman to its third
straight conference title with his dominating play inside the goal,
was named the 2005 South Atlantic Conference mens soccer Player
of the Year for the second year in a row, and was one of six Eagles
named to the All-Conference team, the league announced today.
Baldock, a junior from Surrey, Canada, had a 0.38
goals against average, the best in the country in Division II, and had
a save percentage of .924, also tops in the country. He recorded nine
shutouts in 16 matches.
Tusculums
Dave Bailey, who ranked second in the league in goals per game and
points per game, was named Freshman of the Year. Bailey, from Bristol,
England, was a two-time Player of the Week selection.
Carson-Newman coach Allen Vital, who guided the
Eagles to a 16-1 record, was named Coach of the Year for the third
year in a row and fourth time in his career.
The
Scholar Athlete Award for mens soccer went to Daniel Waymont of
Mars Hill College, a Second Team All Conference selection.
Joining Baldock on the First Team from
Carson-Newman are forward Dario Carrasco, who led the SAC in scoring,
midfielder Brad Cobbs and defenders Richard Moodie and Jason McMillan.
Midfielder Sean Guiseppi was named to the Second Team.
Catawba had four All-Conference selections, all
named to the First Team. Forwards Gareth Turnbull and Zay-Zay
Gilewala, midfielder Nathan Zuzga and defender Kenny Crowe are the
honorees for Catawba.
Bailey was one of three Tusculum College players to
make the First Team. He is joined by midfielder Gerald Watt and
defender Jay Harris.
Wingate had four All-Conference picks, with all
named Second Team. Representing the Bulldogs are forward Robert
Dawson, midfielders James Lavery and Ben Clark and defender Kerrin
Sheldon.
Presbyterian also placed four on the All-Conference
Team. Midfielder Trent Weber is a First Team selection, while forward
Brandon Tucker, defender John Odum and goalie Mark Owens were named to
the Second Team.
Lenoir-Rhyne and Mars Hill each placed two
representatives on the Second Team.
Midfielder Ryan Minor and Waymont, a forward, were
selected from Mars Hill. Recognized from Lenoir-Rhyne were forward
Luis Carrizosa and defender Robert Hajnal.
Newberry defender Miles Childers was also a Second
Team selection.
Waymont, a sophomore forward from Weaverville, NC
(North Buncombe HS) has a 3.97 GPA as a physical education major. He
is a Grayson Scholar and a member of the Mars Hill College Deans
List and SAC Commissioners Honor Roll.
Waymont is a two-year letterwinner for the Lions
and ranked third in the league in goals per game and points per game.
He had four game-winning goals this season.
In the community, Waymont volunteered to help build
sidewalks around elementary schools in Buncombe County to provide a
safer environment for students, as well as serving as a volunteer
coach for the Asheville Buncombe Youth Soccer Association and North
Buncombe Middle School
