CARSON-NEWMAN - The Eagles were winners in their only game last week as they defeated Lincoln Memorial 82-62. C-N played their best game of the season so far as they dominated the Railsplitters in almost every facet of the game ... Kente Hart had a team-high 25 points and added five assists and three three-pointers. Darren Williams and Scott Williams each had 14 points and Stan Davis added 12 points. Clay Scott came off the bench to score 10 points for the Eagles ... C-N nailed nine three-pointers and went 15-for-18 from the free throw line. The Eagles defense forced LMU into 18 turnovers and scored 22 points off those miscues ... The C-N bench was impressive as they outscored LMUs reserve players, 38-14 ... Carson-Newman plays at Concord on Tuesday night ... The Eagles opened the season with a 79-73 come-from-behind victory on November 15 ... The Eagles will return home to open a five-game home stretch which begins on December 3 with a 7 p.m. game against Alabama-Huntsville. CATAWBA - The 14th-ranked Catawba men earned a 96-70 win over Newport News Apprentice in its only action of the week ... The Tribe fought off a sluggish start to pull out to a 41-30 lead at the half, shooting only 40 percent ... Catawba would break the game open at the start of the final half ... The Indians went on a 16-3 run in the opening three minutes of the second half and went on to lead 77-41 with 12:43 left ... The largest lead for the Tribe was 39 points at 87-48 with eight minutes to play ... Brian Graves tossed in 20 points to pace the Tribe, while Helgi Magnusson had 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists ... Jamel Hamilton had 13 points off the bench ... Catawba shot 53 percent in the final half to finish the game at 46 percent ... The 12 three-pointers against Apprentice was the most by the Indians this year ... Catawba also held a 49-38 edge on the boards to out-rebound its opponent for the fourth straight game ... Catawba holds at +11 rebounding margin this year and is +23 in scoring margin ... The Tribe is averaging 99 points per game ... Magnusson has led Catawba in scoring in the opening four games, tossing in 15.8 points a game and adding five rebounds ... Graves is adding 15 points and 4.5 assists a game ... Chris Wooldridge leads the team with a 6.3 rebounding average and hits for 14.8 points a game ... The Indians travel to Chowan on Monday then host USC-Aiken on Wednesday ... The Tribe will host the Walt Baker Classic over the weekend with the men facing Shaw on Friday and N.C. Central on Saturday. LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne College mens basketball team (1-2) play one game last week, losing to Livingstone College (3-0) Tuesday night, 68-59, at the William Trent Gymnasium in Salisbury, N.C. The Bears, after taking the lead 54-53 with three minutes to go in regulation, saw the Blue Bears reel off 11 straight points over the next two and a half minutes en route to the win L-R was led by sophomore forward Josh Kindred (Holly Springs, N.C.), who finished just shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds while sophomore forward Reggie Bratton (Charlotte, N.C.) added 12 and junior guard Stephen Hinds (Winston-Salem, N.C.) tallied 11 points with three treys Lenoir-Rhyne, however, was hurt by 19 turnovers and eight-for-18 (44 percent) shooting from the charity stripe Livingstone, on the other hand, was driven by its three-point shooting (11 treys) The two teams will meet each other again (Wednesday, January 4, at Shuford Gymnasium in Hickory, N.C., beginning at 7 p.m.) L-R looks to snap a two-game losing streak with three contests this week The Bears will travel to Asheville to take on N.C.-Asheville on Wednesday at 7 p.m. UNC-A is a member of NCAA Division I The series is tied at eight Lenoir-Rhyne then travels to Salisbury, N.C., to participate in the Walt Baker Classic at Goodman Gymnasium on the campus of Catawba College L-R will face a pair of CIAA schools (North Carolina Central Friday at 6 p.m. and Shaw Saturday at 4 p.m.) NCCU leads the series, 2-1, while Lenoir-Rhyne defeated Shaw in teams only meeting last year, 72-61 on December 30, 2004, in the Moretz Sports Classic. MARS HILL - MHC won went 2-1 on the week The Lions defeated Anderson 66-64 and then beat Lees-McRae 90-87 in overtime before losing at Francis Marion, 82-54 MHC is 4-2 on the season In the first game of the week, Walt Baxley hit a 18-foot jumper as time expired to lift MHC over the visiting Trojans of Anderson College Monday night in Stanford Arena Baxley, who was named the SAC Player of the Week Monday morning, scored a game-high 25 points in the victory In the Lions first four games, Baxley has averaged 27.0 points per contest MHC led the entire first half and took a 34-26 lead into the locker room at the intermission The Trojans came out of the locker room ready to play and went on a 15-to-4 run to take their first lead of the contest (41-40) after J.R. Howell hit a 3-pointer with 14:20 remaining in regulation Anderson extended their lead to nine points (60-51) with 6:37 on the clock after John LeSueur nailed a shot from behind the arc MHC then out scored Anderson 13-to-4 over the next six minutes to tie the contest at 64-all with 25 ticks left on the clock when Elliott McDowell hit a layup off a great pass through the lane by Baxley McDowell then stole the Trojans ensuing in-bounds pass a second later and head coach Terry Rogers called a timeout After being directed to stall for a last second shot, Tony Blake held the ball at the top of the key until the clock dwindled to nine seconds He handed the ball to Baxley who drove to the right wing and lofted the game-winner as the buzzer sounded MHC received 26 points from their bench and scored 14 second chance points MHC won the rebound battle, 34-30 The game saw only four lead changes and one tie Following Baxley for MHC was Marques Maxwell who came off the bench to score 15 points Chris Aline scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds In the second contest of the week, Walt Baxley scored 34 points and Chris Aline recorded a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead MHC to a 90-87 overtime victory over Lees-McRae College Wednesday afternoon in Williams Gymnasium The contest saw 18 lead changes and 14 ties before the Lions prevailed LMC enjoyed a 48-46 halftime lead after shooting 51.4 percent (18-35) from the floor and 50 percent (9-18) from behind the arc Neither team led by more than four points in the second half MHC took a 68-64 lead with 6:41 left in regulation after Aline hit a lay-up off a great pass through the lane by Marques Maxwell LMC battled back and took a 76-74 advantage with 1:09 on the clock after Henry Williams hit one of his eight 3-pointers in the game The Bobcats held on to the lead until Baxley sent the game into overtime by sinking two foul shots to make the score 79-all with four ticks left in the second half A desperation 3-pointer by Aaron Duggar missed at the buzzer sending the contest into the extra period Tony Blake nailed a pair of free throws with 4:19 on the clock in overtime to give MHC an 81-79 lead they would not relinquish The Bobcats tied the game at 85-all when D.J. Menifee hit a fast break lay-up with 2:09 left in overtime but Baxley sank a long range 3-pointer on the Lions next trip down the floor to seal the win After scoring 34 tonight, Baxley is averaging 28.4 points per game in the Lions first five contests Aline is averaging a double-double on the season with 15.6 points and 11 rebounds per game Blake added four assists and seven boards while Maxwell tallied nine points and six rebounds MHC scored 40 points in the paint, received 19 points off their bench and out rebounded the Bobcats 45-to-31 In the final contest of the week, Francis Marion University defeated Mars Hill College 82-54 Saturday afternoon in non-conference mens basketball action Marques Maxwell led Mars Hill with 23 points FMU held the Lions leading scorer Walt Baxley to only four points Baxley entered the game averaging 28.4 points per contest, and recently surpassed 1,000 points for his career Francis Marion led 17-14 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half Rivers and Dorsey then scored two baskets each in a 10-2 Patriot run that gave FMU a 27-16 advantage The lead would grow to 16 points, and following an Artis Lee jumper with one tick left on the clock, the Patriots carried a 41-26 lead into the locker room at halftime Mars Hill cut the deficit to 13 points on two occasions in the final stanza, the last time at 52-39 with 14 minutes left However, Rivers contributed five points to a 7-1 Patriot spurt, and FMU was never threatened again The Patriots largest lead came at 79-48 on hoop by Marchello Hamilton with 2:17 remaining Francis Marion held the Lions to 31.5 percent shooting, while holding a 49-33 rebounding advantage and a 40-16 margin in points in the paint Mars Hill plays host to Lees-McRae College, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. in their next game. NEWBERRY - Newberry went 1-1 for the week at the SAC/Peach Belt Clash in Aiken ... The Indians dropped their first game of the season, 83-74, at USC Aiken Friday night ... Sammy Monroe scored 19 points. Alonzo Hinds added 18 points for Newberry while Zach Chandler, who had five steals, had 10 points for the Scarlet and Gray ... USC Aiken took the largest lead of the first half early on with a 15-5 lead on the heels of a 14-3 run. Clemente Martin broke up that run with a three-pointer at the 12:23 mark ... Newberry slowly battled back, pulling within four points on four separate occasions within a three minute time span. The Indians hard work paid off in the waning moments as Monroe slammed home a dunk with two seconds remaining, making it a one point ballgame at 39-38 Pacers. Zach Chandler got a steal and was fouled with no time remaining and tied the game at 39 to end the half, going one-for-two on the free throws, as he capped off a 7-0 run for Newberry to close the half ... Newberry took their second and final lead of the game early on as Monroe put up a basket and a free throw after being fouled on the shot, putting Newberry up 42-39. Aikens Richard Blocker got a basket, pulling the Pacers within one before Monroe sunk another basket in for the 44-41 lead ... USC Aiken charged back with a 9-0 run to take a 50-44 lead and never looked back. Newberry continued to try and battle back and came as close as three at the 63-60 mark but USC Aiken pulled away for good after that ... After leading by 16 at the half Saturday night, Newberry fought off a Lander attack to record its first win over Lander in the South Atlantic-Peach Belt Clash history, 87-68. Clemente Martin scored 16 as five Indians scored more than 10 points. Sammy Monroe recorded his second double-double of the season and is the only Indian this year to record such a feat. Prior to Saturdays game, Newberry had not taken a game from Lander in 20 meetings, the last win coming on Feb. 10, 1992, a 76-62 Indian victory ... The win is just the fourth for Newberry in the SAC-Peach Belt Clash in school history, bringing their all-time record up to 4-14. Newberry defeated USC Aiken last year in the two-day event, but fell to Lander, 83-77... Newberry was able to wear the Bearcats down with a deep, talented bench as the Indians outscored Lander in points from the bench, 47-19. Newberry held a lead throughout almost the entire first half, going up by as much as 19 at the 1:26 mark and taking a 16 point lead into the locker room at halftime. Newberrys bench scored 19 of the Indians 42 points in the first half ... Four different Indians scored 12 points in the win, including Monroe, Michael Dease, Zach Chandler and Jerrell Jeter. Monroes double-double matched points with rebounds as he recorded 12 of each ... Newberrys key to victory Saturday night was rebounds, especially in the defensive category. The Indians had 38 total rebounds to Landers 29 and out-rebounded Lander defensively, 27-19 ... Newberry next sees action on Tuesday, Nov. 29 as the Indians travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to face NCAA Division I-competitor Winthrop University. The Indians and the Eagles will tip off at 7 p.m. at Winthrop Coliseum in Newberrys first of two games against NCAA Div. I opponents this season. Newberry will also play at Charleston Southern on Dec. 22. Tuesdays game marks a return to familiar grounds for Golden, who was an assistant coach at Winthrop from 1998-2002, helping lead the Eagles to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Winthrop appeared in the 2005 NCAA Tournament briefly, before exiting quickly after a 74-64 defeat at the hands of No. 3-seed Gonzaga in the first round in Tuscon, Ariz. PRESBYTERIAN - Presbyterian College improved their current win streak to six straight with a trio of wins over Peach Belt Conference schools this past week. The Blue Hose are 6-1 on the season and are off to their best start since the 2001-02 season ... PC opened the week with a 64-61overtime victory over Georgia College & State University on the road on November 22. Senior center Johann Collins (Raleigh, NC) led three players in double figures with 14 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Drew Biggs (Alpharetta, Ga.) added 10 points and senior guard Tray Ballenger (Wellford, S.C.) chipped in 11 points and five boards. PC hit eight-of-10 free throws in the extra period to seal the victory ... The Blue Hose went undefeated at the ninth annual SAC/PBC Clash after the Thanksgiving holiday. PC is now 12-6 all-time in the history of the Clash after defeating Lander 77-61 on Friday and USC Aiken 76-58 on Saturday ... Biggs led the Blue Hose in the victory over the Bearcats with a career-high 20 points on four-of-five shooting from beyond the arc. Collins chipped in 13 points, while freshman guard Bryan Bostic (Norcross, Ga.) added 10 points and four assists coming off the bench. Redshirt sophomore center Martynas Versinskas (Kaunas, Lithuania) added eight points and eight boards in the victory as the Blue Hose shot 54.5% from the field and dominated the backboards 39-29. Ballenger chipped in nine points, five boards, and five assists in the victory ... In PCs 76-58 victory over home-standing USC Aiken, Ballenger led the way with a season-high 19 points while adding four boards and a pair of assists and steals. Versinskas came off the bench to score a season-best 16 points on seven-of-eight shooting from the field while adding five boards. PC continued to shoot the ball extremely well, hitting 31-of-55 field goals attempts, good for 56.5 percent. For the second straight game, PC dominated the backboards with a 34-24 advantage. In addition, PC outscored the Pacers 42-18 in the paint and held a 39-26 advantage in points off the bench. Junior guard Quinton Ferrell (N. Augusta, S.C.) and sophomore guard Pat Kiscaden (Oviedo, Fla.) each dished out six assists in the victory over the Pacers ... The Blue Hose are using a balanced offensive attack and a stingy defense to fuel their current six-game win streak. PC has six players averaging atleast 8.0 ppg this season. Defensively, the Blue Hose are holding opponents to 66.3 ppg and hold a +6.1 rebound margin over their opponents. PCs last six opponents are averaging only 62.5 ppg ... Junior guard Quinton Ferrell has stepped up to the challenge as taking over the starting point guard duties for the injured preseason All-SAC selection, junior Sean Dixon. Ferrell is averaging 2.1 ppg, 3.9 apg, 1.0 spg, while shooting 38.5 percent from the floor. During the SAC/PBC Clash, he averaged 5.5 apg and 2.0 spg while committing only seven turnovers in over 52 minutes of action ... The Blue Hose return to action next week with a trio of games. PC hosts Southern Wesleyan University on Monday, November 28 at 7:00 pm followed by a road game on Wednesday, November 30 in Due West, S.C. against Erskine College at 7:30 pm. PCs final game of the week will be Saturday, December 3 with North Greenville College in Tigerville, S.C. at 7:30 pm. TUSCULUM - The Tusculum College mens basketball team went 0-2 last week against Winston-Salem State University The Pioneers (3-2) cut into a 10-point deficit with 2:30 remaining in the game, but the rally fell short in a 64-62 loss at WSSU TC committed 28 turnovers, which the Rams parlayed into 40 points The Pioneers shot 53.5 percent from the floor, including 46.2 percent from 3-point territory Junior Matt Farus led Tusculum with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while sophomore Jordan Lear added 14 markers and nine rebounds Junior Serge Poppe accounted for nine points and eight rebounds, while Gabe Story recorded three blocked shots In Saturdays rematch, the Rams had the hot shooting hand, while Tusculum shot only 30 percent in the opening half in a 75-65 WSSU win Lear led Tusculum in scoring with 15 points, while Douglas Tshomba added 12 points Through five games, Lear has emerged as Tusculum top scorer averaging 18.6 points per game, while shooting 61.4 percent from the floor He is also TCs No. 2 rebounder hauling in 6.2 boards per contest Junior Chris Poore has been leading the Pioneers rebounding efforts with 6.6 boards per game Farus is second in TCs offensive production tallying 13 points per game, while shooting 51.1 percent from the perimeter and 85.7 percent from the charity stripe Tusculum will host Bluefield College on Wednesday before hitting the road Saturday night to face in-state foe Lincoln Memorial University. WINGATE - In Wingates only action last week, the Bulldogs dropped a tough 72-60 NCAA Division II mens basketball decision to Limestone College. For Wingate, sophomore guard/forward Sean Barnette led all scorers with 21 points. Barnette tallied 19 of his 21 points in the first half ... Wingate redshirt sophomore center Bryan Grier continued his comeback tour with a tremendous performance against Limestone. The Vance High graduate had nine points, six rebounds and a career-high nine blocked shots ... On Thursday, November 17, Grier blocked eight shots in an 88-85 regional win over Winston-Salem State. A 2003-04 SAC All-Freshman team member, Grier missed the entire 2004-05 season with an injury ... Wingate is one of the top scoring teams in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region, averaging 86.7 points per game. Barnette tops the Wingate charts with 19.3 points per game. Bulldog junior guard Justin Baker is next with 13.7 points per game. Freshman forward Kenny Villines contributes 11.0 points per contest. Four other Bulldogs hit the radar between 7.7 points per game and 9.0 points per game ... Barnette is hitting an amazing 61.1 percent (22-of-36) of his field goals. In addition to points per game average, Barnette leads the Bulldogs in field goals made (22), three-point field goals made (eight), steals (seven) and minutes played (97) ... Wingate has played three home games this season; the Bulldogs will now hit the pavement for four road games in the next seven days. The Bulldogs will visit North Greenville University Tuesday. Wingate will participate in the C.E. Big House Gaines Basketball Classic at Winston-Salem State University Friday and Saturday ... The Bulldogs will play Claflin University Friday at WSSU, then battle the host Rams Saturday in the Gaines Classic. Wingate defeated Winston-Salem State 88-85 on November 17 in Cuddy Arena on the Wingate campus. Six Bulldogs hit double figures against WSSU in the first meeting between the two teams ... Wingate will conclude its road flurry with a Monday night (December 5) contest at Francis Marion University. The Wingate University Sports Network will broadcast all four games in the next seven days on the Internet at www.redzonemedia.com. |
