CARSON-NEWMAN - The Eagles went 1-1 in their two games last week. The Eagles picked up an 84-79 road win at Concord to begin the week ... Darren Williams had the hot hand for C-N as he scored 31 points on 10-of-14 shooting. He was 7-of-10 from three-point range in the game. Milo Johnson added 15 points and Kente Hart came off the bench to add 10 points ... The game was a close one throughout as the lead changed 20 times and the score was tied 12 times ... The Eagles continue to get production from their bench as they out-scored the Mountain Lions 28-16 ... The Eagles won the game at the free throw line as they converted on 16 of their 22 free tosses. Despite shooting 54 percent from the floor, the Eagles dropped a 92-81 decision to Alabama-Huntsville Saturday night. The Chargers blistered the nets for a 65 percent clip, including 70 percent (19-27) in the first half ... UAH out-rebounded the Eagles 29-18 and were a perfect 20-of-20 from the free throw line ... Darren Williams led the Eagles with 20 points, 12 of which came from downtown ... Stan Davis, Kente Hart and Clay Scott all added 11 points and Jermaine Grimm scored 10 points ... The C-N bench out-scored the Chargers 39-9 ... Carson-Newman continues a long home stand with three games this week. C-N hosts Johnson C. Smith on Monday at 7 p.m., North Greenville on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Lincoln Memorial Saturday at 8 p.m.

CATAWBA - The Indians reeled off four wins over the week to improve to 8-0 ... The eight wins without a loss equals the second-best start for a Catawba men’s team ... The most wins to start the season is 11 which was set by the 1971-72 squad ... The Indians picked up a 76-69 win at Chowan on Monday then held off USC-Aiken on Wednesday 92-90 ... The Tribe knocked off Shaw 82-65 and N.C. Central 90-76 over the weekend at the Walt Baker Classic ... Chris Wooldridge posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds at Chowan as the Tribe used a 42-32 edge on the boards to aid in the win ... The Indians pulled down 27 offensive rebounds ... Jolly Manning, who had double figures in all four wins, scored 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots ... USC-Aiken had a three-point shot at the buzzer for the win on Wednesday, but it came up short ... The Indians were out-rebounded for the first time all season and were out-scored 21-5 in second-chance points ... The Indians shot 53 percent and had just 14 turnovers ... Brian Graves delivered a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists, while Helgi Magnusson led the way ith 18 points and six rebounds ... Jamel Hamilton tossed in 17 points and six players reached double figures in scoring ... Catawba raced to a 48-28 lead over Shaw at the half and never looked back ... The Indians canned 55 percent from the floor in the win ... Helgi Magnusson had 16 points and six assists, while Graves added 15 points ... The Indians scored the first eight points against NC Central and led by double digits most of the way ... The closest the Eagles got in the second half was nine ... Hamilton tallied 18 points for the Tribe, while Manning added 15 ... Finnur Magnusson scored nine points, hitting on a pair of three-pointers, and added four rebounds and three assists filling in for Rokus Bartasius ... Catawba is shooting nearly 50 percent for the season and is averaging 92 points a game ... Helgi Magnusson is leading the four Indians averaging double figures at 15.3 a contest ... Graves is tossing in 13.1 a contest ... Catawba will host Virginia State on Monday and Chowan on Wednesday before a Saturday road test at West Georgia.

LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne College men’s basketball team (3-3) won two of three games last week and are at .500 after six games to start the 2005-06 season … On Wednesday, L-R traveled to Asheville, N.C., to take on UNC Asheville at the Justice Center and prevailed by an 81-78 score … The Bears turned the ball over just five times in the contest including once after intermission while the Bulldogs tallied 17 in the game … The turnover battle may have proved to be the difference as UNC Asheville, with a definite height advantage, out-rebounded Lenoir-Rhyne, 49-31, and shot 50 percent from the field (30-for-60) … The Bears fell behind 24-14 early in the first half then reeled off 14 straight points to take a 28-24 advantage and the game went back and forth from there … L-R also went on an key, 17-6 run late in the second half to take a 77-71 lead and were able to hold on from there ... Sophomore guard Josh Rudder (Graham, N.C.) led the Bears with 22 points including 14 in the first half while sophomore forward Reggie Bratton (Charlotte, N.C.) added 18 and junior guard Eric Mauldin (Albemarle, N.C.) scored all 11 of his points after break with a big trey late in the game to seal the win … At the Walt Baker Classic over the weekend at Goodman Gymnasium in Salisbury, N.C., L-R split its two games, defeating North Carolina Central on Friday (71-63) before falling to Shaw on Saturday by an 80-74 score … L-R built a 15-point lead (55-40) early in the second half and held off a late Eagle rally for the win … Rudder once again led the Bears in scoring with 21 points while Bratton added 13 for L-R … Despite out-rebounding Lenoir-Rhyne, 47-34, N.C. Central was hurt by its poor free-throw shooting (16-for-34) … Shaw rode its free-throw shooting (28-for-45) in the win over Lenoir-Rhyne and scored its last 15 points from the charity stripe … Lenoir-Rhyne held a 43-40 advantage over Shaw thanks to a trey from Rudder early in the second half, but Shaw hit the Bears with a 14-1 run to take a 55-44 lead L-R could get no closer than five points the rest of the way … Rudder (21 points) was the lone player to score in double figures for the Bears and he pushed his streak of 20 or more points in a game to three … Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take on Winston-Salem State University Monday at 7:30 p.m. … The two teams met earlier in the year in the first game of the season at Shuford Gymnasium on Tuesday, November 15, with L-R prevailing by a 64-61 score … The series between the two schools is tied at two.

MARS HILL - Mars Hill was idle last week … The Lions are 4-2 on the season and will host Lees-McRae College on this week on Tuesday night … MHC defeated the Bobcats earlier this season 90-87 in overtime in Banner Elk, NC.

NEWBERRY - Newberry’s rollercoaster week started with what many expected to be a blowout turning into a nailbiter and ended with turning an apparent blowout into a respectable loss. In between, the Indians managed a blowout of their own in their favor ... Tuesday night, Newberry traveled to Winthrop University for a meeting between the mentor and protégé, Eagle head man Gregg Marshall and Newberry skipper Shaun Golden, respectively ... With one second left in the game, Newberry called time out as Winthrop’s Craig Bradshaw missed two chances at the free throw line to seal the win, giving the Indians one last chance at a Hail Mary shot. However, Sammy Monroe’s three-point, last second shot fell just short as the Eagles escaped with a 79-77 victory Tuesday night. The Indians were led by Zach Chandler’s 19 points and an Indian team that shot 77 percent from the free throw line ... Sammy Monroe recorded his fifth consecutive game with 10 or more points. Alonzo Hinds added 12 points for the Indians ... Newberry held a one-point advantage at the half, 35-34 after 20 minutes of back and forth action. Newberry was down one man on their deep bench as preseason All-South Atlantic Conference honoree Michael Dease injured his head at the 10:36 mark after running into a tough, but legal, pick. Dease did not return for the remainder of the first half ... The two teams continued to battle back and forth in the second half. Winthrop took a 48-43 lead but the Indians battled back to tie the game at 58 as Eric Nwawel and Clemente Martin each hit two straight free throws. Winthrop went on a 6-0 run to take a 64-58 lead and then took a 74-68 lead but Jerrell Jeter and Alonzo Hinds made back-to-back layups to pull the Indians within two at 74-72 with 2:32 remaining ... Friday’s game was a different story as Newberry advanced to the Sodexho Classic Tournament championship game with a convincing win over Barry University, 99-75, hosted by Queens University of Charlotte. Zach Chandler scored 17 of his team-high 21 points in the first half ... Newberry led by only eight at the half, but went on a 19-6 run to open the second period, keyed by six points from Clemente Martin. The Indians extended the lead to 24 on four occasions, including the final margin ... Newberry used a similar run in the first period, this one 11-1, to open up a quick 20-7 lead. Full-court pressure applied by the Indians’ backcourt led to a series of scores where the ball never made it across halfcourt ... Junior guard Alonzo Hinds scored 17 in the winning effort. Martin added 10 points for Newberry ... Newberry trailed by 20 with 6:28 remaining in the game but trimmed the lead to six with under a minute left using furious defensive pressure. The effort was not enough, as Queens prevailed, 78-70, in the Sodexho Classic Tournament championship game Saturday night in Ovens Athletic Center. Guard Zach Chandler was named to the all-tournament team for his 32 points in two games ... Newberry dropped to 4-3 and won its second runner-up trophy under head coach Shaun Golden’s tenure. The Indians captured second place in the Mt. Olive Pickle Classic last season ... Queens used a 12-1 run to end the first half, expanding its two-point lead to 39-26 at intermission ... The Royals opened the second period the way they concluded the first, going on a 12-6 run to put the lead at a comfortable 19 points. Following physical play at the 12:08 mark after a Newberry offensive rebound, Golden was issued two technical fouls. Timon Farley knocked down all four foul shots for Queens to open a 55-32 margin. The hosts opened their largest lead at 63-37 less than two minutes later, and the Newberry comeback would begin. Seven straight Indian points, five of those by Sammy Monroe followed by another 10-5 spurt, helped close the gap to a manageable 14 points with 3:13 left. The Indians scored 12 of the final 16 points, but it would not be enough ... Hinds scored 20 points in the loss. Monroe continued his streak of double-digit scoring games, recording 13 in tonight’s contest along with two blocks. Chandler scored 11 markers ... Newberry will return to action Wednesday night at home against Limestone following the women’s game with Morris College which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

PRESBYTERIAN - Presbyterian College improved their current win streak to nine straight with a trio of wins over Southern Wesleyan University (62-55), Erskine College (67-55), and North Greenville University (74-65). The Blue Hose are off to their best start since the 1992-93 season ... PC opened the week with a 67-55 victory over Southern Wesleyan University at home on November 28th. Freshman guard Bryan Bostic (Norcross, Ga.) came off the bench to score a team-best 15 points and add five rebounds to lead the Blue Hose. PC struggled to shoot 39.4 percent from the floor, but out-rebounded the Warriors 47-44 including 15-12 on the offensive glass. Senior guard Tray Ballenger (Wellford, S.C.) chipped in nine points, 10 rebounds, fie assists on the night while fellow senior, center Johann Collins (Raleigh, N.C.) added eight points, 10 boards and four blocked shots. Junior forward Grant Herren (Oviedo, Fla.) continued his solid play with seven points, seven boards, and five assists ... PC extended with win streak to eight straight with a 67-55 victory on the road over Erskine College on November 30th. PC’s Ballenger and sophomore forward Drew Biggs (Alpharetta, Ga.) each tallied 16 points while Collins chipped in 11 points and seven boards. The Blue Hose shook off a slow first half and three-point deficit to shoot 51.9 percent from the floor in the second half en route to the victory. PC outscored the Flying Fleet 44-29 after intermission and dominated the boards to a 37-28 advantage ... Ballenger led five Blue Hose in double figures with 15 points and nine boards as the Blue Hose prevailed in overtime 74-65 on the road over North Greenville University last Saturday. PC outscored the Crusaders 11-2 in the extra period including four points from Ballenger. The Blue Hose out-rebounded North Greenville 40-32 including 17-10 on the offensive glass. Biggs scored 14 points while Bostic and Collins added 11 points apiece. Herren rounded out the double figure scorers wth 10 poins and six boards. Junior Quinton Ferrell (N. Augusta, S.C.) dished out a game-best six assists and added two blocks, and three steals for PC ... The Blue Hose are using a balanced offensive attack and a stingy defense to fuel their current nine-game win streak. PC has six players averaging atleast 9.0 ppg this season. Defensively, the Blue Hose are holding opponents to 63.9 ppg and hold a +6.3 rebound margin over their opponents. PC’s last nine opponents are averaging only 61.1 ppg ... Junior guard Quinton Ferrell has stepped up to the challenge as taking over the starting point guard duties for the injured preseason All-SAC selection, junior Sean Dixon. Ferrell is averaging 2.1 ppg, 3.7 apg, 1.1 spg ... The Blue Hose return to action on Wednesday, December 14 by host the Spartans of USC Upstate at 8:00 pm. PC will travel to Savannah, Ga. to participate in the Chatham Orthopaedics Holiday Classic on December 16-17. The Blue Hose will face No. 1 ranked University of Montevallo on December 16 at 3:00 pm. On December 17, the Blue Hose play host Armstrong Atlantic State University at 8:00 pm.

TUSCULUM - The Tusculum College men’s basketball team recorded a pair of wins last week defeating Bluefield College (80-76) and Lincoln Memorial University (61-59)… The Pioneers improve to 5-2 on the season… Sophomore forward Jordan Lear played a big hand in both wins… Against Bluefield, the Zanesville, Ohio native posted 26 points and nine rebounds, including three 3-pointers… He followed that performance with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards at LMU… Lear made the winning basket with 19 seconds as TC won at LMU for a second straight season… Junior guard Chris Poore also had a solid week… The Greeneville, Tenn native averaged 13.5 points and 10 rebounds per game… Poore posted 15 markers and nine boards against Bluefield… He shot 5-for-9 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free throw line… Poore followed that effort with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds against LMU… The Pioneers have made a three-point basket in 504 consecutive games dating back to 1987… Senior Donald Sexton had his consecutive starts streak end at 34 in a row as he didn’t play in the Bluefield game due to injury… The 2005 SAC Tournament Most Valuable Player was back in action at LMU where he dished out a game-high eight assists… Sexton has 341 assists in his career, which are fourth all-time in Tusculum history… He has recorded at least one assist in his last 35 consecutive games… Tusculum will play three games this week… The Pioneers will host Augusta State University for a South Atlantic Region contest on Tuesday… Tusculum will be on the road this weekend at the Glenville State Tournament in Glenville, W.Va… TC will open the tournament on Friday as they face West Liberty State College... The Pioneers will face either Lock Haven University or host Glenville State on Saturday.

WINGATE - Wingate redshirt sophomore center Bryan Grier was voted the Most Valuable Player of the 2005 C.E. “Big House” Gaines Memorial Basketball Classic Saturday evening. The Vance High School graduate had a career-high point total of 21 and added nine rebounds and four blocked shots in an 87-67 win over Claflin University Friday night. Grier contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and a game-best six blocked shots in a 69-67 victory over regional foe Winston-Salem State Saturday afternoon ... For the week, Grier hit 82.1 percent of his field goals (23-of-28) as Wingate won three games to improve to 5-1 overall on the season. He averaged 17.0 points per game, 11.3 rebounds per game and 5.8 blocks per game. Earlier in the week, Grier recorded totals of 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds as the Bulldogs defeated North Greenville University 81-74 in NCAA Division II men’s basketball action Tuesday night in Hayes Gymnasium on the NGU campus ... The Wingate University men’s basketball team withstood a furious Winston-Salem State University comeback in the final 10 minutes to claim a 69-67 victory in the C.E. “Big House” Gaines Memorial Basketball Classic Saturday afternoon at the Gaines Center on the WSSU campus ... Wingate junior guard Bill Smith blocked a three-point field goal attempt at the buzzer to preserve the Bulldog win. The rejection was only the second block of his young (six game) Bulldog career ... Bulldog junior guard Justin Baker led the visitors with 20 points. Wingate sophomore guard/forward Sean Barnette had 13 markers, while Grier contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and a game-best six blocked shots ... The Rams cut Wingate’s lead to one point twice in the final 1:13, but they could not get over the mountain. Wingate led 54-36 with 10:18 remaining when a basket by senior guard Shaun Kirkland gave the Bulldogs their 18-point lead. Grier and Baker made the All-Classic team ... Trailing 34-33 at halftime Friday, the Bulldogs blew open a close game against Claflin with a 25-3 run to start the second half. In addition to Grier’s effort, Baker contributed 14 points. Kirkland added 10 points off the bench.
