CARSON-NEWMAN - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles improved to 6-1 as they won all three games last week. C-N out-rebounded King 43-32 and forced 25 turnovers as they won 80-60 to start the week. Nicole Avrett led C-N with 17 points. Giovanni Booker scored 15 points, Ashley Tipton had 14 points and Amanda Ray added 10 points. The Lady Eagles’ defense held King to only 38% (20-53) shooting. In the first game of the Wingate tournament, the Lady Eagles beat West Virginia Wesleyan, 76-67. Ray had 23 points and 11 rebounds and Avrett added 20 points and seven rebounds in the win. Once again, the Lady Eagles out-rebounded their opponent, 44-34, and forced a season-high 32 turnovers, 17 of which came on C-N steals. The Lady Eagles rounded out the week with a 68-64 win over Elizabeth City State. Tashea Ledbetter led a balanced Lady Eagle attack as she score 15 points. Booker scored 12 points and LaToya Davison scored 10 points. C-N out-rebounded ECSU 49-33 and forced 21 turnovers. Booker and Ray were named to the All-Tournament team. The Lady Eagles only have one game this week as they host Lincoln Memorial December 10 at 6 p.m.

CATAWBA - The Lady Indians earned a pair of wins last week and have now won three of their last four outings ... Catawba defeated Fayetteville State 64-58 on Tuesday and took down Pfeiffer 82-66 on Sunday ... Hannah Davis hit a three-pointer with 2:59 left to snap a 56-56 tie against Fayetteville State and Catawba led the rest of the way ... It marked the only three-pointer of the night for the Lady Indians ... Catawba shot 50 percent in the second half and held the Lady Broncos to just 30 percent ... The Lady Indians held a 51-45 edge on the boards to offset a 28-16 deficit in turnovers ... Catawba also benefited at the line, making 19-of-28 to just 5-of-12 for FSU ... Tamekia Foster had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the Lady Indians, while freshman Brittany Higgins added 10 points off the bench ... Davis had a huge game against Pfeiffer as she equaled her career-high of 29 points ... She hit on 8-of-15 field goals, including a pair of three pointers, and hit 11-of-12 at the line ... Catawba again used a big margin at the charity stripe, making 36-of-54 to just 12-of-23 for Pfeiffer ... Foster and Corin Muldrow also reached double figures in scoring with 10 each ... Muldrow pulled down eight rebounds and added two assists, two steals and a block ... Davis paces Catawba with a 14.3 scoring average and adds 6.6 rebounds per game ... Foster is added 10.9 points and 8.1 rebounds ... The 82 points vs. Pfeiffer was a season-high ... The Lady Indians will host Bowie State and Monday and travel to N.C. Central on Saturday for its two games this week.

LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne College women’s basketball team (4-3) played the last of its season-opening, seven-game road trip last Tuesday night as it defeated Virginia State, 63-50, at the Daniel Gymnasium in Petersburg, Va. … The Bears were particularly effective on defense, limiting the Lady Trojans to just 34 percent shooting for the game including 22 percent in the first half (six-for-27) and forced Virginia State into 25 turnovers … Lenoir-Rhyne had three players finish in double figures including junior forward Joanie White (Claremont, N.C.), who led the team with 13 points and seven rebounds while senior guard Sandi Hyatt (Albemarle, N.C.) and freshman forward Kalah Wilson (Asheville, N.C.) with 12 and 10 points, respectively … Wilson scored all 10 of her points before intermission and finished three-for-three from the field and four-for-four from the charity stripe … Lenoir-Rhyne built a 10-point advantage at break and more or less maintained the double-digit advantage throughout the contest ... White leads the team in scoring this season (12.9 point per game) while senior guard Shannon Jones (Warrenton, N.C.) averages a double-double (10.0 ppg and 10.1 rebounds per game) to lead L-R as well ... Lenoir-Rhyne will take on Chowan College in its home opener Monday night at 6 p.m., at Shuford Gymnasium … The contest is the first of three straight home games for the Bears as the squad will host Montreat at 6 p.m., on Wednesday … L-R is meeting Chowan for the first time in school history while the Bears lead the all-time series with the Cavaliers, 2-1.

MARS HILL - MHC won both of their contests last week … They rolled to a 101-63 win over Montreat College on Tuesday night before defeating Virginia Union University 75-71 on Saturday afternoon … Kristi Ferris (Knoxville, TN) had a great week averaging 20 points and 8.5 rebounds … She posted a double-double in the Lions win over VUU … MHC is now 4-2 on the season … In the first game of the week, Ariel Okunowo (Decatur, GA) hit a 3-pointer with 19:24 on the clock and the Lions never look back … After shooting 63.2 percent (24-38) in the first frae, MHC led 57-20 at the break … The second half was played closer than the first but MHC still prevailed by a 38 point margin … Ferris led MHC with 19 points and seven rebounds playing only 20 minutes in the game … Okunowo ended up with 16 points in the contest … In the second game of the week, Kristi Ferris and Lindsey Jones (Crossville, TN) scored 21 points apiece to lead the Lions to a four-point (75-71) victory over the visiting Panthers of Virginia Union University Saturday afternoon in Stanford Arena … Ferris hit a jumper with 17:21 remaining in the first half to give MHC a 7-6 advantage they would not relinquish … After hitting 54.8 percent of their field goals in the first stanza, the Lions enjoyed a 12 point (49-37) lead at the intermission … The Lions hit 6-of-12 shots from behind the arc in the first half … Jones scored 18 of her 21 points in the first frame … MHC started the second half as they ended the first … They out scored VUU 9-to-2 to open the final period and take their biggest lead of 19 points with 15:55 left in regulation after Ferris hit a 3-pointer … The Panthers regrouped and went on a 26-to-7 run to trim the Lions lead to just two points (65-63) with 5:33 left in the contest after Andrea Colbert hit a shot in the lane … Ferris answered the run by hitting her third 3-pointer of the game to give MHC a 68-63 lead 12 seconds later … Colbert then sank a long range shot from 3-point distance to bring VUU back within two points (68-66) at the four minute mark but Ariel Okunowo sealed the win for the Lions’ 55 seconds later (32:05) by also hitting a 3-point basket (71-66) … MHC scored 12 second chance points after out rebounding the Panthers 41-to-35. The Lions hit 10-of 25 three-point attempts in the game. VUU scored 26 points in the paint, 20 points off Lion miscues and received 20 points from their bench. After shooting so well in the first half, MHC cooled off in the second half hitting only 24% (6-25) of their field goals … Ferris recorded a double-double in the win pulling down 10 rebounds in the contest … Jones missed a double-double by a single rebound (9) … The duo was 14-for-26 (54 percent) from the floor in the victory … Two other Lions scored in double figures … Abby DeBusk (New Tazewell, TN) added 13 points while Okunowo tallied 11 points and four assists … Colbert led VUU with 21 points followed by Shanell Roberts with 13 and Tamika Duck who added 11 … Duck also pulled down nine boards in the loss … MHC will host Converse College on Monday, December 5 ... Game time is set for a 7 p.m. start. And then host Johnson C. Smith University on Saturday night, also at 7 p.m.

NEWBERRY - Newberry completed a sweep of their competition at the North Carolina Central University Lady Eagle Classic, defeating the host school, 58-55, in the tournament’s final game, and Johnson C. Smith, 68-60, in the first round. Sophomore guard Monica Alexander (Norcross, Ga.), who tallied 35 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists on the tournament, and sophomore forward Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, S.C.) were named to the All-Classic team, Alexander getting the Classic MVP nod ... The Lady Indians picked up a huge win on the Lady Eagles’ home floor, as NCCU was 6-0 before Saturday’s contest. Newberry improves to 3-3 overall ... Newberry got off to a sluggish start against Johnson C. Smith as it fell behind 7-0 early on. After four minutes of play, the Lady Indians stormed back with a 7-0 run for themselves, thanks to Chance Stewart’s back-to-back three point shots. The score stayed tight for most of the first half, with neither team leading by more than four. With 5:08 to go in the opening period, Newberry opened up a six-point lead, 26-20, and continued to widen the gap for the remainder of the half. Newberry went into the locker room with a 33-25 advantage ... Newberry let their lead slip to five, 50-45, with 7:48 left on the clock, but the play of Tonique Frasier, Cortney Snowden, and Tygress Hope proved to be enough. After fouls shot from Frasier, a Hope jumper, and an Alexander charity shot, Newberry made the score final at 68-60 ... For the game, Newberry was led by Stewart’s 14 and Alexander’s 12, Frasier and Snowden both contributing 10. Hope led Newberry in rebounding with nine, while Alexander grabbed eight and Snowden seven. Alexander also dished out six assists ... Newberry started slow again Saturday night with Frasier putting Newberry on the board at the 17:23 mark. NCCU picked up the intensity shortly thereafter with a 6-0 run, but the Lady Indians were able to respond with an 8-0 run of their own, making the score 10-6 in favor of Newberry. Neither team led by more than four for the remainder of the half ... The Lady Eagles built a five-point lead, 34-29, early in the second half thanks to a Nakisha Stewart three pointer, but Newberry fought back to force a 41-41 tie with 11:15 remaining after a Frasier jumper. The Lady Indians never trailed again, as they widened their lead late in the game ... Newberry kept their momentum going, building a 50-45 advantage with 5:39 on the clock and sprinted to a 56-45 lead two minutes later, outscoring the Lady Eagles 15-4 following the 41-all tie ... Newberry capped the game late with Alexander’s six points in a two-minute span. Alexander’s layup with 2:38 remaining, which gave Newberry a 58-48 cushion, marked the last time the Lady Indians scored ... NCCU went on to rally for eight unanswered points in the waning minutes. The Lady Eagle run came up short as they turned the ball over to Newberry in their final possession, giving the Lady Indians the ball with eight ticks left ... Despite shooting 28.6 percent from the free throw line on the game, 25 percent (4-16) in the second half, Newberry was able to hold off the CIAA conference preseason No. 1 Lady Eagles ... Next up for the Lady Indians is their home opener against Morris College on December 7. The action begins at 6 p.m. in Eleazer Arena.

PRESBYTERIAN - Presbyterian College improved to 7-1 on the season with a pair of road wins last week over Erskine College and Virginia State University. PC defeated Erskine College 73-67 this past Wednesday, and defeated Virginia State University 71-59 on Saturday. The Lady Blue Hose have now equaled the win total (7) of the entire 2004-05 season ... PC 5-1 record is the best start for the program since the 2001-02 season ... In PC’s 73-67 victory over Erskine College, senior forward Rebecca Wessinger (Laurens, S.C.) led five players in double figures with a game-high 20 points. PC shot 53.8 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Flying Fleet 38-31. Freshman center Sharie Hopkins (Chesapeake, Va.) and sophomore guard Amy Jones (Warthen, Ga.) eached tallied 11 points while senior forward Wesley Campbell (Greenville, S.C.) and freshman Morgan Johnson (Marietta, Ga.) added 10 points apiece. PC totaled 12 blocks in the game and dished out 19 assists on the night ... Hopkins led all five starters in double figures with 14 points, nine boards, and three steals as the Lady Blue Hose defeated Virginia State 71-59. PC continued their horrid shooting, hitting 22-of-42 field goals, good for 52.4 percent. PC turned the ball over 21 times, but tallied 10 steals and held the Lady Trojans to 38.6 percent shooting from the floor. Wessinger tallied a team-best 15 points and added five assists and four steals while Campbell and sophomore guard Bridget Takach (Chapin, S.C.) each added 11 points. Jones rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 points ... Defensively, PC is allowing only 63.0 ppg and hold a +9.0 rebound advantage this season. When PC holds its opponents to under 70 points, they are 7-0 this season. PC on offense has six players averaging atleast 7.0 ppg ... Sophomore guard Amy Jones has come into her own this season. The native of Warthen, Ga., is averaging 10.4 ppg, 4.1 apg, 4.3 rpg, 1.4 spg while shooting 41.9 percent from the field, 40.7 percent from three-point range, and 71.4 percent from the free throw line ... Freshman center Sharie Hopkins has made the most of her time in the starting lineup this season. Hopkins averaged 12.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 2.5 bpg, 2.0 spg, while shooting 62.5% from the floor ... Wessinger leads the team in scoring (17.3 ppg), and is third in rebounds (5.6 rpg) while shooting 52.1 percent from the field, 40 percent from beyond the arc, and 69.6 percent from the line. She currently has 1,086 career points which ranks 14th in program history. She needs 44 points to surpass former All-SAC standout and teammate Bonnie Werner (2001-04) for 13th place with 1,129 career points ... Fellow senior Wesley Campbell has come up big this season and is averaging 9.6 ppg, a team-best 7.3 rpg, and shooting 81.3 percent from the line ... The Lady Blue Hose return to action on Wednesday, December 14 when they host the Lady Crusaders of North Greenville University at 6:00 pm. PC then hosts Livingstone College on Saturday, December 17 at 2:00 pm. The Lady Blue Hose’s final game before the Christmas holiday will take place on Tuesday, December 20 with a road game against NCAA Division I High Point University at 7:00 pm.

TUSCULUM - The Pioneers played just one game last week, and made the most of opportunity, claiming a 71-59 victory at Lincoln Memorial… TC’s victory snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Lady Railsplitters. The last time the Pioneers had gotten the best of LMU was Jan. 20, 1999, when they claimed an 84-69 win… Tusculum’s rivalry with Lincoln Memorial marks its longest-running women’s hoops series. LMU holds a 33-12 all-time advantage in the match-up … Tusculum freshman Ashli Oliver posted one of the best games of her young career, establishing season-highs with 21 points, 63.6 percent (7-for-11) shooting from the field, and 66.7 (6-for-9) percent accuracy from beyond the arc. Her seven made field goals was also a season-best, and her six made three-pointers ties the TC single-game record held by teammate Chassity Martin and former Pioneer Lanna Owens … Freshman Shantae Shank provided a lift off the Pioneer bench, tallying eight points, three rebounds, two steals, and an assist in 12 minutes of action. Her totals in the points, rebounding, and steals statistical categories were season-highs … Senior Amber Redding narrowly missed a double-double in the victory at LMU, registering nine points and 10 rebounds. Redding continues to lead the squad with an average of 8.0 rebounds per game … Junior Chassity Martin contributed 14 points versus the Lady Railsplitters, and she has now scored in double-figures in five consecutive games. Martin leads TC with an average of 16.0 points per contest … Junior guard Brooke Underwood turned in another solid performance at Tex Turner Arena, posting nine points, seven assists, three rebounds, and two steals … Tusculum will host a pair of games this week, with Queens (N.C.) coming to town on Monday (6 p.m.) and North Greenville making an appearance in Pioneer Arena on Saturday (7:30 p.m.) … Tusculum defeated North Greenville 77-72 in its season opener in Tigerville, S.C., on Nov. 15.

WINGATE - Bulldog senior center Veronica Taylor was voted MVP of the 2005 OrthoCarolina Invitational, hosted by Wingate University in Cuddy Arena Friday and Saturday. She had 12 points and nine boards against the West Virginia Wesleyan College Bobcats Saturday as the Bulldogs picked up a 95-51 victory ... Taylor led four players in double figures with 18 points in a 93-67 triumph over NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional foe Elizabeth City State University Friday. The All-SAC center added eight rebounds and three blocked shots against ECSU ... For the week, Taylor averaged 15.0 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game and 1.5 blocks per game. She also hit 58.3 percent (14-of-24) of her field goals ... The Wingate University and Carson-Newman College women’s basketball teams picked up wins Saturday in the OrthoCarolina Invitational, hosted by Wingate in Cuddy Arena. Wingate defeated West Virginia Wesleyan College 95-51, while Carson-Newman survived Elizabeth City State University 68-64 ... Wingate (5-3 overall) topped the 90-point plateau for the second time in two days, defeating the Bobcats by 44 points at home. Six Bulldogs hit double-figures, led by Union County natives Kasey Gillis (Piedmont HS) and Tanetra Barrett (Forest Hills HS) with 14 points each ... Wingate University opened the home portion of its 2005-06 schedule with an impressive 93-67 NCAA Division II women’s basketball victory over Elizabeth City State University Friday in the 2005 OrthoCarolina Invitational, held in Cuddy Arena on the Wingate campus. The Bulldogs led by as many as 40 points down the stretch ... Taylor led four players in double figures with 18 points. The All-SAC center added eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Wingate junior guard Tanetra Barrett had 16 points and a team-best five assists. Barrett is nearing the 1000-point plateau, as the 2005 SAC Co-Player of the Year enters this week’s with 947 markers ... Wingate freshman point guard Anna Atkinson netted 12 points against the Vikings of ECSU, while junior forward Kerri Metzker contributed 10 points off the bench. The Bulldogs shot 50.8 percent (31-of-61) from the field against ECSU.
