Courtesy Presbyterian College Sports Information Office WACO, TX - Presbyterian College senior Marcus Brisbone and Carson-Newman senior Deonte Bolden have been named to the 2005 AFCA Division II Coaches' All-America Team announced today by the American Football Coaches Association. Brisbone becomes the fifth Blue Hose player in program history and first since 2001 to earn this honor. Brisbone, a 6-1, 271-pound offensive guard from Sumter, S.C., has also been named to the 2005 Daktronics All-Southeast region first team, All-South Atlantic Conference first team honors and was selected as the league's Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner, given annually to the top offensive lineman this year. Brisbone averaged over 94% grade-out per game, did not allow a sack or pressure, and never was graded with a "loaf." Brisbone is also a finalist for the 2005 Gene Upshaw Award as the NCAA Division II top lineman. Bolden (Tampa, Fla. ) had 35 tackles, six interceptions and a team-high six pass break-ups in 2004. He was also a kick returner for the Eagles as he averaged 8.4 yards on punt returns, 11.3 yards on interception returns and 29.3 on kick-off returns. This is the second time in his career Bolden has received All-American accolades. He was named to the Dopke.com All-American team in 2003. The AFCA Division II Coaches' All-America Team is made up of players from NCAA Division II and NAIA institutions. The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all four of its divisions. Brisbone joins former Blue Hose standouts: Robert Norris (1971), Roy Walker (1978-79), Jimmie Turner (1983), and former teammate Todd Cunningham (2001) who earned this honor. The AFCA has selected an All-America team every year since 1945. The four teams now chosen for each AFCA division evolved from a single 11-player squad in 1945. From 1945 until 1967, only one team was chosen. From 1967 through 1971, two teams, University Division and College Division, were selected. In 1972, the College Division was split into College I and College II. In 1979, the University Division was split into two teams - Division I-A and Division I-AA. In 1996, the College I and College II teams were renamed Division II and Division III respectively. From 1965-81, a 22-player (11 offensive, 11 defensive) team was chosen. In 1982, a punter and placekicker were added to the team. The AFCA's Division II All-America Selection Committee is made up of three head coaches from each of the AFCA's nine districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts prior to a conference call between the district chairmen and the committee chairman on which the team is chosen. Members of the AFCA Coaches' All-America Team receive a plaque commemorating their selection to the team. 2005 AFCA Division II Coaches' All-America Team Offense Defense Specialists |
