Wingate Women Claim 2006 SAC Regular Season

SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate claimed the 2006 South Atlantic Conference Womens Basketball Championship with a 74-61 in over host Catawba on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs improve to 21-5 overall and 12-1 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 8-18 and 3-10. Catawba dominated the first half, building a 27-15 lead with just under three minutes to go in the opening stanza. The Bulldogs shot just 22%, hitting only 7-of-32 from the field, and committed 13 turnovers to just nine for Catawba. Wingate would hit half their shots in the final half in scoring 54 points. Tanetra Barrett (Marshville, NC) scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half rally. The Bulldogs took the lead for good on a layup by Veronica Taylor (Columbia, SC) at 43-41 with 12:24 to go. Another Taylor basket with 6:31 left put the Bulldogs up by 10 and Wingate held a double-digit margin the rest of the way. Anna Atkinson (Marion, NC) joined Barrett with 16 points, while Shannon Proffit (Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND) added 12. Freshman Brittany Higgins (Takoma Park, MD) tallied a career-high 19 points for Catawba, reaching double figures for the seventh straight outing. Hannah Davis (Williamsburg, VA) followed with 16 and Tamekia Foster (Chesapeake, VA) added a dozen.
