Mattox Resigns as Mars Hill's Womens

Courtesy Mars Hill College Sports Information Office MARS HILL, NC Mandy Mattox has resigned her position as head womens basketball coach at Mars Hill College, athletic director David Riggins announced today. A search for a replacement will begin immediately. Mattox chose to step down to spend more time with her family, her husband Charlie and son Rob. She held the position for five years posting an 86-58 record. Her 36-33 SAC record places her ninth among all-time SAC coaches in conference winning percentage (.522). During her tenure she coached seven All-SAC players, one SAC Player of the Year, two All-South Atlantic Region players and one Kodak All-American. Mattox was named the SAC Coach of the Year in 2002 after leading her squad to a NCAA Elite 8 appearance, winning the NCAA South Atlantic Region Tournament, SAC Tournament and SAC regular season championship. Mattox leaves MHC with the second most wins in school history behind Sylvia White (1992-98) who recorded 96 wins in six seasons at the helm. Mattox served the athletic department in many ways during her stint at MHC. She served as the institutions Senior Womens Administrator and as the Director of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. MHC athletic director David Riggins stated, In her five seasons at Mars Hill College, Mandy has become the prototype of what we seek in a coach. She is knowledgeable in her field, competitive within proper bounds and fosters positive relationships both within the college community and in the community at large. We are all indebted to her for what she has given to Mars Hill. Coach Mattox stated, I am very thankful for the opportunity David Riggins offered me five years ago to coach the women's basketball team. I will miss working at Mars Hill College tremendously. The people who make up the college are really what make it a special place. My players have been an incredible group to coach and that is what makes this job so much fun. I definitely leave Mars Hill with many fond memories and great experiences. Mars Hill College is a NCAA Division II institution and a member of the South Atlantic Conference. The league is comprised of schools in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. |
