Catawba Splits With Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba salvaged a split with host Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field, giving the fourth-ranked Indians its third straight league crown. The Lions won the opener 10-5, while Catawba won game two 12-2. The Indians improve to 40-11 overall and 17-4 in the SAC, while Mars Hill stands at 29-25 and 10-11.

In the opener, Chris Lambert (Brevard, NC) and Clarke Rollins (Mechanicsville, MD) gave the Lions a 2-0 lead in the third inning by hitting solo homeruns. Lambert came through for the Lions again in the fourth inning when he hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Marc Wassum (Winter Park, FL).

David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) tied the game for the Indians in the fifth frame when he hit a three-run homer to right-center. Catawba then took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning when Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) singled through the middle to plate Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC). Wassum then hit a two-run homerun to left-center to give the Lions a 5-4 advantage at the end of six innings of play.

MHC then scored five runs on four hits in the seventh inning to put the game away. Jeff Mayo (Enfield, CT) and Jason Yelton (Burnsville, NC) each had two-RBI singles in the inning.

Wassum led the Lions with three RBI followed by Mayo who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Rollins was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Cody Branton (Burnsville, NC) picked up the win (5-2) in relief for the Lions. Charlie Harrison (Granite Falls, NC) obtained his league-leading tenth save in the contest throwing the final three innings allowing just one run on three hits and struck out three batters. Adam Atkinson (Weaverville, NC) kept MHC in the game as he started the game and went five innings allowing just two earned runs on six hits.

Thomas led Catawba going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Baker was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) took the loss (8-2) for the Indians on the mound.

Catawba jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning on four hits and three Lion errors. The inning was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) and a two-run homerun from Thomas. Matt Russell crossed the plate in the bottom half of the second inning on fielder’s choice to cut the deficit to 5-1. He reached base by hitting a triple down the right field line.

Matt Carter (Sunrise, FL) hit a two-out single in the third stanza to score Billy Britt (Asheville, NC) from third base and cut the Indians lead to 5-2. In the top of the fourth, Catawba went up 7-2 after the Indians received RBI singles from Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC).

The Indians added a pair of runs in the fifth inning when Rimer hit a lead-off homerun down the right field line and Lefko scored on a sacrifice fly by Thomas. Catawba scored two more insurance runs in the sixth frame when Lefko singled to center to plate Sands and then Baker doubled to drive in Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC). Catawba ended their scoring in the seventh inning after Davis was sent home on a sacrifice fly by Sands.

Thomas and Lefko each tallied three RBI in the game. Lefko had three hits while Thomas recorded two. Sands also had multiple RBI with two in the win. Blake Ketner (Davidson, NC) threw five innings scattering six hits and allowing just a single earned run to pick up the win (6-2) for the Indians, who will be the top seed in next week’s SAC Tournament in Greeneville, TN.

Carter led MHC going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Mayo was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Nathan Fritz (Kingsport, TN) took the loss (1-6) for the Lions on the hill.


Tusculum Sweeps Presbyterian
CLINTON, S.C. --- Tusculum College senior Tim Brown went 5-for-6 on the day as the Pioneers swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader over Presbyterian College at the PC Baseball Complex Saturday afternoon. TC took the first game 6-2 and blanked the Blue Hose in game two 6-0. With the sweep, coupled with No. 4 Catawba splitting its doubleheader at Mars Hill College, the Pioneers claim a share of its second SAC Championship with the Indians.

PC falls to 18-38, 7-14 SAC, while Tusculum improves to 35-12-1, 17-4 SAC. The 17 conference wins establishes a new school record for Tusculum as the Pioneers increase its winning streak to 11 in a row.

Game 1: No. 26 Tusculum 6, Presbyterian 2
Tusculum pounded out 13 hits including five doubles, while senior Kenny Lewis (Scottsville, Va.) picked up his fifth win of the season as the Pioneers defeated Presbyterian 6-2 in the opener.

Tusculum opened the scoring in the top of third when senior Matt Riggs (Dayton, Tenn.) hit a two-RBI double scoring Brown (Flint, Mich.) and freshman Aaron Hudgins (Kingsport, Tenn.). The Blue Hose trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning when senior Evan Sowell (Chesterfield, S.C.) flied out to centerfield scoring Preston Simpson (Lancaster, S.C.). Simpson had led off the inning with a triple.

In the fourth, the Pioneers added a run to push the lead to 3-1 as Brown scored following a Blue Hose error. PC once again trimmed the lead back to one run at 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single from junior Kyle Craven (Savannah, Ga.). The Pioneers would add two more runs in the seventh on an RBI single by senior Greg Stotser (Columbus, Ga.) followed by a RBI double from senior Adam Beacham (Atlanta, Ga.). TC would add an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single from senior Josh Wolff (Louisville, Ky.).

Lewis went five and one-third innings, allowing two runs, one earned on five hits with four strikeouts, while at the plate, Brown went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Wolff went 3-for-4 at the plate for Tusculum.

Game 2: Tusculum 6, Presbyterian 0
Tusculum and Presbyterian each posted six hits apiece, but, Tusculum took advantage of four Blue Hose errors to take the second game of today's doubleheader 6-0.

TC pitchers Michael Handley, Adam Hall and Wes Hill combined on the six-hit shutout.

Tusculum came out swinging scoring the first run of the game in the first when senior Skip Talarek (Great Falls, Va.) hit into a fielders choice and scored Wolff who had reached on a fielding error by the pitcher.

In the third, Tusculum improved their lead 4-0 when they took advantage of three Blue Hose errors to put batters in scoring position.

Talarek picked up two of his three RBI when he flied out to blue Hose freshman Cory Lyda (Simpsonville, S.C.) in left field.

Handley (Dulluth, Ga.) threw five innings, struck out four, gave up four hits to improve to 5-1 on the year. At the plate, Brown and freshman Aaron Hudgins (Kinsport, Tenn.) each posted two hits to lead the Pioneers.

Lyda and sophomore Russell Robinson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) each put up two hits to lead the Blue Hose at the plate. PC starting pitcher Steven Henry (Hoschton, Ga.) pitched a complete seven innings giving up only two earned runs on six hits from the Pioneers. Henry falls to 4-4 for the season.

The official pairings and seeding for the 2006 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament will be announced by the league office early this week. Tusculum will be in action on Monday when they host Limestone College for a 4 p.m. contest at Pioneer Park.
