Lenoir-Rhyne Men’s Golf Moves Up to Sixth Place in NCAA Division II Southeast/Atlantic Super Regional

Day One Recap

Concord, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne College men’s golf team moved up two spots to sixth place in the Southeast Region after the second day of the NCAA Division II Southeast/Atlantic Super Regional Tuesday at the Rocky River Golf Club in Concord, N.C.

L-R finished with a 616 (+40) on the par-72, 6,960-yard course while USC Aiken (585, +9) leads the tournament by 20 strokes and the Pacers’ Scott Brown (142, -2), the top individual, is the lone player under par.

Junior Kyle Shevlin (Peru, Illinois) is the Bears’ No. 1 golfer after two rounds. Shevlin shot a 151 (+7) and is currently tied for ninth place while freshman Kent George (Granite Falls, N.C.) is tied for 16th with a 153 (+9).

The third and final round of the 54-hole tournament is set for Wednesday.

Day two of the NCAA Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional saw defending national champion USC Aiken continue to play well while the rest of the Southeast field, including Newberry College, slipped 20 or more strokes behind the Pacers. Much like Monday, the Indians struggled with holes one through nine, but put together a respectable performance on the back nine.

Newberry currently sits 18 strokes off the fourth- and fifth-best teams in the super regional, Armstrong Atlantic State and Georgia College and State. The top five teams in the region will advance to the national tournament in two weeks. Coker College (+13) and Pfeiffer University (+19) are currently the top two squads from the Atlantic Region.

Catawba College's Richard Lowe is the top individual after the second round, sitting tied for 16th place. Lowe shot an 80 an Tuesday and has a two-day score of 153.

Tusculum College's Nick Kinzer is tied for 21st after shooting a 75 on Tuesday. Teammate Chris Wynne shot a 76 and is is tied for 35th with a score of 159.

Carson-Newman's Dane Fairfield also improved on his first-day score, shooting a 75 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 157 and is tied for 31st.

Presbyterian College junior Ben Karns shot a second round 82 and is 43rd.

Karns, a native of Gaffney, S.C., shot a 42 on the opening nine today. On the second nine, Karns overcame a pair of double bogeys with a birdie on No. 10 for a 40.

Four-time defending national champion USC Aiken holds a 20-stroke lead over Georgia College & State University and Armstrong Atlantic State University paced by second-round leader Scott Brown, who fired a one-over par 73. Brown leads Johan Cronvall of GCSU by two strokes overall.
