Concord, N.C. The Lenoir-Rhyne College mens golf team tied for the fifth out of eight teams in the Southeast Region of the NCAA Division II Southeast/ Atlantic Super Regional, which concluded Wednesday at the Rocky River Golf Club in Concord, N.C. L-R ended the tournament with a 917 (+53) on the par-72, 6,960-yard course while defending national champion USC Aiken (875, +11) won the region by 37 strokes and the Pacers Scott Brown (211, -5) took home individual honors and was the lone player to shoot under par. Freshman Kent George (Granite Falls, N.C.) and sophomore Jakin Fox (Statesville, N.C.) each tied for eighth overall with a 226 (+10) to lead the Bears. Fox shot a two-under 70 in the final round Wednesday and was one of two players (Brown the other) to shot under par for the day. Pfeiffer, Coker, and Barton from the Atlantic Region will join defending national champion USC Aiken and Columbus State from the Southeast Region at the Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, West Virginia, in the finals of the men's golf championship. The Newberry College men's golf team finished eighth. While Newberry finished eighth among Southeast Region teams, it did finish with a lower score than three teams from the Atlantic Region, effectively making the Indians 13th out of 16 teams at the Rocky River Golf Club. A long shot to even make the NCAA tournament field, head coach Brian McCants' golfers showed admirable fighting spirit, personified by junior Brian Rush (Duncan, S.C.). Following the second round, Rush's knee was heavily iced and it appeared unlikely that he would be able to compete on the last day. Not only did he compete, but he matched his team-best two-over-par that he fired on day one. His twelve-over for the tournament was good for a share of 14th place. Only two seniors will depart from this year's squad, and all five NCAA tournament participants will return, four of them for their senior seasons. Tusculums Nick Kinzer finished tied for 14th and Chris Wynne tied for 31st on Wednesdays final round of action at the 2006 NCAA Division II Mens Golf Super Regional. For Kinzer (Chattanooga, Tenn.), it was his final round of golf as a member of the Pioneer squad. He made the most of the opportunity, firing a two-over-par 74, his best round of the 54-hole event. Kinzer concluded the tournament 12 stokes over par, posting a total score of 228 (79-75-74=228). On the final day of action, he surged seven places up the leader board to tie for 14th. He was one-over on both the front and back sides of the par-72, 6,970-yard course. Wynne (Johnson City, Tenn.) carded a final-round 79 to finish the event with a 22-over-par 238 (83-76-79=238). In the final round, the sophomore was just two over on the front nine (38) but went seven over (41) after making the turn. Kinzer and Wynne were the third and fourth players in the history of the Tusculum mens golf program to compete in the NCAA Regional. Presbyterian College junior Ben Karns shot a final round 74 to jump 10 spots and finish tied for 33rd. Karns, a native of Gaffney, S.C., shot a 37 on the opening nine today which included a birdie on No. 6. On the second nine, Karns also shot a 37 and birdied No. 14. Carson-Newman's Dane Fairfield struggled with an 88 in the final round to finish tied for 43rd overall.
