Three SAC Softball Teams Begin NCAA Play Thursday

Indianapolis, Ind.----The NCAA Division II Softball Committee has selected the 64 teams that will participate in the 2006 NCAA Division II Softball Regional Championships, which includes three teams from the South Atlantic Conference. Eight teams will participate at each of eight regional sites in double-elimination tournaments to determine the final eight championship participants.

Regional competition will be held May 11-15. Winners will advance to the finals to be held May 18-22, at the James I. Moyer Softball Complex in Salem, Virginia.

Wingate, Lenoir-Rhyne, and Carson-Newman will travel to Columbus, Georgia to participate in the South Atlantic Regional Thursday through Monday. Number nine Columbus State University will host the 2006 NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional as the number one seed.

The Bulldogs received the number three seed and will face number six seed Carson-Newman College (40-13 overall) Thursday at 11 a.m. SAC regular-season champion Lenoir-Rhyne is the fourth seed and will face fifth seed USC-Upstate in the first round.

The entire NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional will be played at the former Olympic Stadium in Columbus, GA, site of the 1996 Olympic softball venue.
