1 Box Score Wingate improves to 46-9 overall with the victory, the teams third in four tries against the Eagles this season. Carson-Newman falls to 40-14 overall with the loss. Chester hit a solo shot in the second inning and added a two-run shot in the fourth to provide all her teams runs. I think Carson-Newman is a quality program and this was a good win for us, said Wingate head coach Michelle Caddigan. I am so proud that on any given day any player can step up for us. I hope that will make us successful this weekend. A first team All-South Atlantic Conference selection in 2006, Chester broke up a scoreless tie in the second when she got a line drive up into a brisk wind blowing out toward center field for a solo home run. The Eagles would answer with runners in scoring position the next two innings, but could not capitalize as Bulldog junior pitcher Ashley Green (Charleston, S.C.) pitched out of the jams. Wingate senior shortstop Grace Cunningham (Camden, S.C.) laced a one-out single in the fourth and was sacrificed to second by senior first baseman Sarah Carleton (Powhatan, Va.). Chester was the next batter and she got a fly ball up into the breeze and it sailed out to dead-center field for a two-run homer and a 3-0 lead. Carson-Newman pushed across its lone run in the fifth inning. Eagle junior outfielder Hillary Hammond (Chattanooga, Tenn.) singled to lead off the frame. She was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore shortstop Mandy Stevens (Knoxville, Tenn.). Freshman outfielder Katie Speaks (Manassas, Va.) followed with a double down the right field line to make the score 3-1. Green got a strikeout and a groundout to avoid any further damage in the inning. We had opportunities to really make some plays on offense and we never got the at-bat we needed; no clutch hitting, said Eagle head coach Vickee Hollifield. Chester was the difference; she made two big swings. Chester was the only player for either team to collect two hits as both teams had five safeties each. Green fanned seven with two walks, improving her record to 26-6 overall this year. Carson-Newman senior hurler Megan Elliott (Chattanooga, Tenn.) fanned two with one walk in falling to 29-10 overall on the season. Wingate moves on to face the Georgia College & State University/Armstrong Atlantic State University winner at 4:30 p.m. Friday, while Carson-Newman will face the loser of the same contest on Friday at 11 a.m. Lenoir-Rhyne 3, USC
Upstate 2 Thursday at South Commons Stadium in Columbus, Ga. L-R, the fourth seed, will now face top-seeded Columbus State Friday at 7 p.m., in the second round. CSU defeated Queens, 8-0, in the opening round. Each team scored a single run in the opening inning. USC Upstate opened the scoring on an RBI single by Jena Keith (Ruby, S.C.) before Lenoir-Rhyne tied it on a leadoff solo home run by sophomore centerfielder Taylor Queen (Conover, N.C./St. Stephens HS). The round tripper was Queens school-record 10th of the season. Queen has now tied Lenoir-Rhyne's all-time home run mark with 17. The fifth-seeded Spartans quickly regained the lead, 2-1, on a run-scoring single by Heidi Gibbs (Florence, S.C.) in the top of the second frame. The contest remained 2-1 until the Bears pushed two runs across in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 3-2 advantage and held on for the win. Lenoir-Rhyne tied the score when senior second baseman Chrissy Lunsford (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek HS) crossed the plate on a wild pitch before senior third baseman Kim Crowley (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Flanagan HS) delivered the game-winning single to left field which scored sophomore first baseman Leah Krohn (Taylorsville, N.C./Alexander Central HS) with two outs. Freshman pitcher Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman HS) improved to 28-7 with the victory. Hanes, who scattered four hits, did not allow a hit after the second inning to go along with six strikeouts while Jessica Jolly (Moncks Corner, S.C.) fell to 16-7 with the loss. Junior shortstop Brooke Starnes (Conover, N.C./St. Stephens HS) led the Bears offensively with two hits. |
