Georgia College & State University sophomore right fielder Brianna Hope threw out Wingate University freshman third baseman Hallie Pettigrew at the plate for the final out of the game here Friday, preserving her team’s 4-3 win in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional at South Commons Park. Wingate remains alive however, as does Lenoir-Rhyne who advanced with a 2-0 win over host Columbus State University. Carson-Newman was eliminated as they lost to Armstrong Atlantic State, 3-2.

Columbus, GA - Armstrong Atlantic State plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh, with the game winner coming home on a squeeze play, to take a 3-2 win over Carson-Newman at the South Atlantic Regional.

Carson-Newman is eliminated from the tournament with the loss and ends its season at 40-15. AASU (38-26) advances to play Columbus State at 1:30 on Saturday.

"We will have to do whatever it takes to continue to win in this tournament," said AASU head coach Ted Evans. "Whether it be long ball or small ball, we will do whatever it takes."

The game-winner was not without controversy, however, as Carson-Newman catcher Kim Thorne was called for obstruction on the play. Pinch-runner Angela Long appeared to be out on the play, but Thorne had blocked the runner's progress without the ball and that allowed the run to score. The tying run had scored two batters earlier on a single by Colleen Markyna to score pinch-runner Kacey Morrison.

Carson-Newman had taken its first lead of the game in the top of the seventh when Mandy Stevens delivered a two-out, two-run single through the left side to score Hillary Howard and Jessica Blevins. That gave the Lady Eagles a 2-1 lead in support of pitcher Megan Elliott.

Elliott did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and suffered the tough-luck loss after allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts in the game.

AASU got on the board in the second inning without the benefit of a hit. Jeana Short walked and stole second and then was bunted to third by Ashley Bain. Jessica Miranda brought her home with a sacrifice fly to left, making it 1-0.

Pirate pitcher Rachel Koening-Eng scattered seven hits in the game and fanned five to earn the win. She did not walk a hitter in the game.

Seven different players had hits for the Lady Eagles, while AASU got safeties from three different players in the pitchers' duel.

Georgia College & State University 4, Wingate 3 Box Score
Columbus, Ga.----Georgia College & State University sophomore right fielder Brianna Hope (Conyers, Ga.) threw out Wingate University freshman third baseman Hallie Pettigrew (Uniontown, Ohio) at the plate for the final out of the game here Friday, preserving her team’s 4-3 win in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional at South Commons Park.

GC&SU had taken the lead with a three-run rally in the sixth. The Bobcats (42-11 overall) remain unbeaten and will face Lenoir-Rhyne at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Wingate (46-10 overall) will face Queens University of Charlotte at 11 a.m. on Saturday in an elimination game.

“This team doesn’t give up; we seem to enjoy putting pressure on ourselves,” GC&SU head coach Ginger Miller said. “Our players have much heart and when (certain) players don’t perform great, there is always someone there to pick them up. That is why we’re a good team.”

Wingate jumped out to the early lead thanks to a long two-run homer from senior first baseman Sarah Carleton in the top of the first inning. Her 15th round-tripper of the season scored Pettigrew, who had walked with one out. GC&SU pushed across a single run in the bottom of the first when a two-out single by junior third baseman Keidra Baitey (Stockbridge, Ga.) scored junior outfielder Deidra Baitey (Stockbridge, Ga.).

The Bulldogs pushed the lead to 3-1 in the sixth on another long ball. Senior shortstop Grace Cunningham (Camden, S.C.) smacked a solo clout (her 15th of the season) to lead off the frame. Wingate would load the bases, but Bobcat freshman pitcher Mandy Chandler (Covington, Ga.) coerced a groundout off the bat of Bulldog freshman outfielder Heather Winchester (Waxhaw, N.C.) to get out of the jam.

GC&SU got an RBI single from freshman designated player Lindsey Swanson (Kennesaw, Ga.) in the bottom of the sixth. Later in the pivotal sixth frame, the Bobcats got a huge two-RBI single from sophomore catcher Shelbie Lindsey (Waddell, Ariz.) to take their first lead of the game. Wingate junior pitcher Ashley Green (Charleston, S.C.) got out of the inning by getting a pair of groundouts to end the sixth.

Wingate got a leadoff single from junior outfielder Kimee Lewis (Farmington, Utah) to start the seventh. Pettigrew reached on a fielder’s choice. A throwing error on the same play left two runners aboard. After a fielder’s choice retired Lewis, Wingate junior catcher Mandi Chester (Charlotte, N.C.) lined a single to right. Hope came up firing to nail Pettigrew for the final out at home plate.

“It hurts to lose a softball game that was as well-played as that one,” Wingate head coach Michelle Caddigan said. “I can’t be anything but proud of my team.”

The two pitchers gave ground in the game, but combined for 14 strikeouts. Wingate’s Green allowed four earned runs but fanned six with one walk. Chandler whiffed eight with one walk. She allowed three earned runs.

Wingate got hits from six different players, led by the homers from Carleton and Cunningham. The senior duo share Wingate’s single season home record with 15 round-trippers each. Deidra Baitey and twin sister Keidra Baitey led the Bobcats’ seven-hit attack with two hits each.

Lenoir-Rhyne 2, Columbus State 0
Columbus, Ga. – The Lenoir-Rhyne College Softball Team (51-10-1) advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional with a 2-0 win over No. 9 Columbus State University (39-14) Friday evening at South Commons Stadium in Columbus, Ga. The Bears entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed while the Cougars, the host school, were the top seed.

L-R will next face No. 11 Georgia College and State University (42-11) Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Columbus State, meanwhile, plays Armstrong Atlantic State Saturday at 1:30 p.m., in the losers’ bracket.

For the second straight game, sophomore centerfielder Taylor Queen (Conover, N.C./St. Stephens HS) led off the Bears’ first inning with a solo home run while freshman pitcher Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman HS) pitched a three-hit shutout.

Hanes, who upped her record on the year to 29-7, did not walk a batter for the third straight game and struck out seven en route to her 19th shutout on the season.

The game remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh inning when senior second baseman Chrissy Lunsford (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek HS), after leading off the frame with a double, scored on a Cougars’ throwing error.

Columbus State’s Stasha Morton (Rossville, Ga.) fell to 23-7 with the loss despite allowing just one earned run to go along with four strikeouts.

Lenoir-Rhyne freshman designated player/third baseman Angela Beard (Hickory, N.C./Fred T. Foard HS) was the game’s top hitter, finishing three-for-three with two doubles.

Earlier in the week, three Lenoir-Rhyne players earned NFCA All-South Atlantic Region honors. Hanes was selected to the first team while Queen and Beard earned second-team honors.
