Wingate Defeats Queens in NCAA Softball Regional; Weather Disrupts Saturday Evening Schedule
Lenoir-Rhyne to resume suspended game Sunday morning; WU follows vs. AASU

Complete Box Score     Revised Tourney Schedule

Columbus, Ga.----Wingate University senior shortstop Grace Cunningham (Camden, S.C.) hit a walk-off two-run homer to give the Bulldogs a 5-3 victory over Queens University of Charlotte in Saturday’s NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional tournament at South Commons Park.

With the victory, Wingate (47-10 overall) will play Armstrong Atlantic State University Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. (please note time change). The Royals complete the 2006 season 34-24 overall.

“I feel emotionally, our hearts were hurting last night (after a tough 4-3 loss to GC&SU),” Wingate head coach Michelle Caddigan said. “I feel we did regroup and to the team’s credit, we found a way.”

In Caddigan’s opinion, Wingate’s experience helped. “I think it’s the veteran attitude with Kimee (Lewis) on third base and Grace stepping up to the box. I think everyone in our program felt a calm and that good things were going to happen.”

A junior outfielder from Farmington, Utah, Lewis started the bottom of the seventh with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. After a sacrifice bunt moved Lewis to third base, Queens junior starting pitcher Lauren Berst (Mooresville, N.C.) was lifted for senior reliever Jennifer Churchill (Lake Forest, Calif.).

Following the pitching change, Cunningham hit her team-leading 16th homer of the season over the left-field fence to end the game. With the dramatic round-tripper, Cunningham sets the South Atlantic Conference record for home runs in a single season. Carson-Newman’s Staci Fish held the previous record of 15, set in 2001.

Wingate started the scoring in the second inning, taking advantage of a pair of Queens’ errors to score two unearned runs. The Royals cut the deficit in half in the fourth on an RBI single by freshman second baseman Noel Belk (Charlotte, N.C.).

The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. Cunningham doubled and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by junior catcher Mandi Chester (Charlotte, N.C.). Queens would battle back in the top of the seventh, tying the game at 3-3 on a two-run single by senior designated player Erika Brummel (La Quinta, Calif.).

Bulldog junior pitcher Ashley Green (27-7 overall) picked up the win in relief, allowing two runs on four hits in four innings of work. Green’s ledger included three strikeouts and two walks.

Berst (4-6 overall) took the loss for Queens, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits. She had two strikeouts and two walks in 6 1/3 innings of action.

“They left everything on the field,” Queens head coach Adrian Ochoa said. “They showed much heart to come back with two runs in the top of the seventh. The second inning errors came back to hurt us, but the kids didn’t get down on themselves. I’m very proud of them.”

Offensively, Cunningham finished three-for-four with a home run, a double and two RBI. Lewis contributed a two-for-three performance for the victors. For the Royals, Brummel was one-for-three with two RBI. Queens freshman first baseman MaryLee Giurintano (Greensboro, N.C.) was two-for-four with a double.
