Baur Named New Sports Information Director at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman athletic director David Barger announced on Monday that Michael Baur has been named the new Sports Information Director for the college.

“Mike brings all of the necessary attributes that make up a good SID- strong writing skills, experience in web development and game management expertise,” Barger said. “He has a passion for athletics and he is a very strong Christian which fits the expectations that all of our coaches and staff adhere to.”

“Mike has a wide variety of work experience in all three divisions of the NCAA as well as radio which have prepared him for the Carson-Newman challenge. We welcome Mike and Laura to the Carson-Newman family,” Barger said.

Baur comes to C-N from Catholic University in Washington D.C. where he has served as the SID for 21 sports. Prior to his stint in the nation’s capital, Baur was an assistant at Winthrop University in South Carolina where he was the primary contact for the Eagles’ baseball and women’s soccer teams while assisting with other sports including men and women’s basketball and volleyball.

Baur began his media career in Milledgeville, Ga. as the news/sports director at WMVG/WKZR Radio in 1998. In 2000, he served as a reporter for the South Carolina News Network and later as the producer/announcer for “Primetime Sports,” a popular sports talk show on WISW-AM in Columbia, S.C.

Baur earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism in 1998 and a master’s degree in mass communications in 2004 from the University of South Carolina. His wife Laura is originally from Knoxville.

“My wife and I are thrilled to be coming back south to East Tennessee and to be at Carson-Newman. We look forward to working with a great staff of professionals who are also brothers and sisters in Christ. Carson-Newman is a special place and it is somewhere we hope we can be for a very long time,” Baur said.

Baur, who will start at Carson-Newman in July, replaces Marlin Curnutt who resigned in April to pursue other higher education opportunities. “Mike is a true professional and will be a wonderful addition to the Carson-Newman staff. I look forward to working with him to make sure the transition goes smoothly,” Curnutt said.
