The No. 6 Carson-Newman College Eagles posted a 4-1 win over the Newberry College Indians in the first round of Food Lion SAC Tournament play at McCown Field Tuesday afternoon. Junior forward Dario Carrasco (Andalucia Malaga, Spain) pulled off a hat trick to lead the Eagles. Carrasco scored two unassisted goals in the first half and took a pass from Daniel Deaderick (Morristown, Tenn.) in the second half as the Eagles fired 12 shots on goal to just seven for Newberry. Brad Cobbs (Rocky Mount, VA) scored on a free kick at the 56-minute mark to account for the other C-N score. Tyler Baldock (Surrey, British Columbia), the SAC Player of the Year, had six saves in 74 minutes of work for the Eagles. Jeffrey Taylor (Sumter, S.C.) scored an unassisted goal at the 65-minute mark for the Indians. The match featured 33 fouls and five yellow cards. Carson-Newman will face the winner of Wingate and Presbyterian at 12 p.m. Friday at Wingate at the SAC semi-finals. Wingate (12-8-1 overall) advances to Fridays semi-finals to face NCAA Division II number six Carson-Newman College (17-1 overall) at 12 noon. The Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Final Four will be hosted by Wingate University. In the 43rd minute, Wingate senior midfielder Kevin Benfield (Charlotte, N.C.) served a beautiful right-to-left pass to a wide-open Wilson. The Lenoir-Rhyne College transfer headed the ball into the empty nets for his third goal of the season. The Blue Hose played the final 26:56 a man down due to a red card. Despite the disadvantage, Presbyterian outshot Wingate 13-12. Senior goalkeeper Dustin Prickett (Lakeland, Fla.) went the distance in the nets for the host Bulldogs. Prickett recorded the shutout with four saves. Presbyterian redshirt junior goalkeeper Mark Owens (Charleston, S.C.) played 90 minutes as well, allowing one goal and recording six saves. Owens played offense late in the game for the Blue Hose. He fired a shot, as his header was saved by Prickett in the waning moments. No. 6 Lenoir-Rhyne 5, No. 3 Tusculum 2 GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Robert Hajnal recorded two goals and an assist as No. 6 Lenoir-Rhyne College defeated third-seeded Tusculum College 5-2 at Pioneer Field in the opening round of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament. With the victory, the Bears (13-6-2) avenge an earlier loss to Tusculum and advance to Friday's SAC Tournament semifinal against No. 2 seed Catawba College at 3 p.m. The Food Lion SAC Tournament semifinal and final will be played on the campus of Wingate University this weekend. Tusculum, the defending SAC Tournament Champion, falls in the opening round for the first time since 2001. The Pioneers (11-6-1), ranked third in this week's NCAA Division II Appalachian Region rankings, now waits to learn its postseason fate next week. Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out in front early when Adam Goldie found the back of the net off a free kick from 25 yards out three minutes into the match. The score remained 1-0 until 36 seconds remaining before halftime when Tusculum's Dave Bailey, the 2005 SAC Freshman of the Year, tallied the equalizer on his 15th goal of the season. The Bears tallied two goals in the first four minutes of the second period. The first came at the 47:58 mark when Shawn Brunk scored from the right wing. Hajnal (All-SAC Second Team) accounted for the eventual match-winner two minutes later as the found the back of the goal to make the score 3-1. Tusculum drew within on as Jay Harris (All-SAC First Team) scored on a breakaway pass from Kohei Yamashita in the 69th minute. Hajnal added his second goal of the night and sixth of the year when he scored a breakaway goal, which was assisted by Nate Whitehurst at the 74:23 mark. The Bears closed out the scoring in the final minute as Alex Maric scored off an assist by Hajnal to seal the win. L-R keeper Jonathan Sandlin went the distance as he recorded three saves, while TC net-minder J.P. Swaminathan accounted for two saves in the loss. No. 6 Lenoir-Rhyne (13-6-2) 1 4 - 5 Scoring Summary No. 2 Catawba 2, No. 7 Mars Hill 0 SALISBURY, NC Second-seeded Catawba College used a pair of second-half goals to defeated visiting Mars Hill 2-0 in first round action of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Mens Soccer Tournament on Tuesday night at Frock Field. The 23rd-ranked Indians, who improve to 13-4-1 overall, advance to face Lenoir-Rhyne in a Friday semifinal match to be held at Wingate University. The Lions, seeded seventh, end their season at 5-10-2. Catawba, who played shorthanded after the suspension of nine players, including six starters, for violating a team policy, got on the board just past the hour on a tally by senior Zay-Zay Gilewala (Monrovia, LIBERIA). Garth McCormack (Charlotte, NC) took a pass and played past a defender then slotted a ball to Gilewala, who dribbled in from 35 yards out and beat the Lion keeper. The Indians got an insurance goal on an own goal in the 65th, when Nathan Zuzgas (Troy, MI) corner kick deflected off a Lion defender into the net. Both teams had several chances to score in the opening half, the best came off the foot of Gilewala as he hit a shot off the crossbar six minutes into the match.
