Wingate, N.C.----Carson-Newman College junior goalkeeper and South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year Tyler Baldock (Surrey, British Columbia) saved three penalty kicks during a shootout with Wingate University to lead the Eagles to the finals of the Food Lion SAC tournament Friday afternoon.

2005 Semifinal:  Wingate vs. Carson-Newman

Carson-Newman and Wingate were tied 0-0 after regulation and two 10-minute overtimes in their SAC tourney semi-final. The contest will be recorded as a tie. Carson-Newman (17-1-1 overall) is the number six team in the NCAA Division II top 25 poll. Wingate completes the 2005 season 12-8-2 overall.

In the shootout, Wingate took the first penalty kick. Baldock denied Bulldog sophomore midfielder James Lavery (Belfast, Northern Ireland). Eagle senior forward Brad Cobbs (Rocky Mount, Va.) scored first for the SAC regular season champions.

Wingate senior forward Robert Dawson (Manchester, England) went next for the Bulldogs and scored to tie the shootout at 1-1. Carson-Newman senior defender Renato de Freitas (Sao Paulo, Brazil) converted for the Eagles to make it 2-1.

Baldock stepped up again, stopping a penalty shot by Wingate sophomore defender Kerrin Sheldon (Moatsville, W.Va.). Eagle senior midfielder Sean Guiseppi (Port Coqurtlam, British Columbia) scored on the next penalty try to put Carson-Newman up 3-1.

Wingate Senior goalkeeper Dustin Prickett (Lakeland, Fla.) went the distance in the nets for the Bulldogs. Prickett recorded the shutout with four saves.


Catawba 2, Lenoir-Rhyne 1

Wingate, N.C.----Catawba College senior forward Zay-Zay Gilewala (Monrovia, Liberia) scored the match-winner in the 74th minute to lead the Indians to a 2-1 win over Lenoir-Rhyne College in the semi-finals of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer tournament, held Friday afternoon at Wingate University.

With the victory, Catawba improves to 14-4-1 overall. The Indians will face number six Carson-Newman College Saturday at 2 p.m. (also at Wingate) for the 2005 tournament championship. Lenoir-Rhyne concludes the 2005 season 13-7-2 overall.

A corner kick led to Catawba’s winning goal. Indian sophomore forward Troy Brown booted the corner kick to junior teammate Jason Dumond (Coppell, Texas), who found Gilewala for the match-winner. Gilewala has eight goals this season.

The two teams were tied 1-1 at intermission. Lenoir-Rhyne struck first, as Bear freshman defender Shawn Brunk (Merritt Island, Fla.) netted his fourth goal of the season at the 11:56 mark of the first half. L-R freshman midfielder Gary Higgins (Paisley, Scotland) assisted Brunk on the play.

Catawba answered in the 32nd minute, as sophomore midfielder Aaron Castaneda (San Antonio, Texas) tallied his first goal of the season. Brown notched the first of his two assists on the afternoon to set up the play.

The Indians outshot the Bears 16-10. Catawba senior goalkeeper Dan Fitzgerald (Seaford, Del.) picked up the win, allowing one goal and recording three saves. Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore netminder Jonathan Sandlin (The Rock, Ga.) also went the distance in the nets. Sandlin notched six saves and allowed two goals.
