Carson-Newman 9, Newberry 0 Box Score GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Derrick Calkin pitched a seven-hit shutout as third-seeded Carson-Newman blanked No. 7 Newberry 9-0 Friday afternoon in the winner's bracket semifinal of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament. The Eagles (31-22) advance to Saturday's winner's bracket final against the winner between Catawba and Wingate to be played at 2 p.m. Newberry (19-34) will face the loser of that contest in an elimination bracket game at 8:15 p.m. tonight. Carson-Newman got all the offense it would need in the second inning as the Eagles pounded out four of their 15 hits, including Bryce Thomas' two-run, two-out double. Kyle Beall connected on a run-scoring double, while Bryan Fowler added a RBI single in the four-run second. Caulkin improves to 6-5 on the season as he walked one and struck out seven in a masterful complete game effort. Thomas and Beall each posted 3-for-5 performances, while Brandon Burchfield and Nick Achberger added 2-for-4 efforts. Newberry was led by T.J. McCord's 2-for-3 day, while Matt Webb also posted a 2-for-4 outing. Catawba 6, Wingate 1 Box Score GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Jeff Abdelnour posted a one-run, six-hit shutout to lead top- seeded Catawba to a 6-1 win over No. 5 seed Wingate Friday in the winner's bracket semifinal of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament held at Pioneer Park on the campus of Tusculum College. The Indians (35-17), ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division II, advance to Saturday's winner's bracket final against third-seeded Carson-Newman, scheduled for 2 p.m. Wingate falls to the elimination bracket and faces host Tusculum (No. 2 seed) later Friday. Abdelnour (9-2) retired nine straight Bulldogs midway through the contest, while the Indians plated a run each in the third and fourth innings and added two in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. In the third frame, Matt Kepley reached on an error, moved second on a bunt and eventually scored on Matt Smith's fly ball to take a 1-0 advantage. In the next inning, Catawba got its first two runners on as Jimbo Davis led off with a walk and Aaron Rimer singled. The two would move up on a bunt and Davis crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The big hit of the game came in the fifth inning off the bat of Davis as he came through a two-run single. Abdelnour pitches his fourth complete game of the season as he scattered six hits, allowed one run, walked one and struck out six. Wingate starter Chad Yow (5-8) posted a solid effort as he went 8.2 innings, allowed eight hits, six runs, three earned, walked three and fanned nine. The Indians recorded eight hits on the day, including multi-hit outings by David Thomas, Davis and River. Davis finished the game with three runs batted in. Wingate was paced offensively by Shaughn Neal's 2-for-4 effort. Tusculum 14, Lenoir-Rhyne 9 Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - In a game that featured an almost two-hour rain delay, the #25 Tusculum Pioneers defeated the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne 14-9 Friday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex in the first losers bracket game. The Pioneers will take on the loser of the Catawba-Wingate game this afternoon in Greeneville. The Bears end their season at 27-23. The Pioneers improve to 35-13 on the season. The 35 wins by the Pioneers is a new school record for victories in a season. Skip Talarek (Great Falls, Va.) went three-for-four with four RBIs to power the Pioneers to the win. Adam Beacham (Atlanta, Ga.) drove in three runs as he went three- for-five at the plate. Picking up his sixth win on the season for Tusculum was Eric Butler (Morristown, Tenn.) who struck out seven batters in seven and two-third innings. For the Bears, Taylor MacCurdy (Charlotte, N.C.) went two-for-four with three RBIs. The Pioneers built a 10-2 lead with four-run explosions in the four and sixth innings. Greg Stotser (Columbus, Ga.) blasted a two-run homerun in the third inning to give TC a 6-0 lead and Beacham belted a two-run homer in the sixth. The Lions cut into the lead with five runs in the eighth inning. The Pioneers committed three consecutive errors in that inning and the Bears took advantage. MacCurdy had a two-run double to provide the big hit in the five-run outburst. Presbyterian 13, Mars Hill 5 Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Presbyterian Blue Hose stayed alive in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Baseball Tournament as they defeated Mars Hill 13-5 Friday afternoon in a consolation round game at Carson-Newman. The Blue Hose had 22 hits and combined their excellent hitting with the outstanding pitching performance of Zach Matthews (Batesburg, S.C.) to eliminate the Lions from the tournament. Matthews picked up a complete-game win as he fanned six batters and scattered five hits which featured a hitless streak by the Lions that lasted four innings. PC lead-off batter Nick Hoffner (Ellicott City, Md.) drove in three runs as he went three- for-five on the day. Also driving in three runs was Matt Bodie (Aiken, S.C.). All of the Lions runs came via the long ball as Lane Strobel (Walkersville, Md.) hit a two-run homerun and Chris Argano (Marietta, Ga.) connected on a three-run homer. Hitting a homerun for the Blue Hose was Evan Sowell (Chesterfield, S.C.). With the win, the Blue Hose improve to 16-34 while the Lions end their season at 26-29. Tusculum 12, Wingate 2 Box Score GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Skip Talarek went 4-for-5 with three RBI to lead second- seeded Tusculum to a 12-2 win over No. 5 seed Wingate Friday night in an elimination bracket game of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament played at TC's Pioneer Park. Tusculum (36-13), ranked No. 24 in NCAA Division II, advances to Saturday's elimination 10 a.m. to face the winner of Presbyterian and Newberry. The Pioneers jumped out to a 12-0 lead, including a four-run second inning led by Talarek's two-run double to center field. TC finished with 18 hits, including three hits and three RBI and two hits each by George Hanger, Kenny Reed, Adam Hicks and Matt Webb. Wingate accounted for a dozen hits with Bryan Baylis' 4-for-5 performance, including a pair of doubles. Jon Svanda and Josh Benton also tallied a pair of hits each in the losing effort. Tusculum starter Kenny Lewis improved to 8-2 on the season as he tossed six shutout innings, scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out one. Chase Christian tossed the final three innings as he allowed five hits, two runs, one earned and struck out four. Wingate's Andy McKinney suffered the loss to fall to 2-9 on the year. The Bulldogs end their season at 21-32 on the year. Presbyterian vs. Newberry GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Food Lion South Atlantic Conference baseball tournament game between Presbyterian College and Newberry College Friday night has been suspended due to rain. The contest will resume Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in the top of the third inning with PC leading 3-0. |
