Presbyterian-Wingate Suspended Wingate 5, Mars Hill 2 Box Score Rock Hill, SC Grace Cunningham (Camden, SC) went 2-for-3 with a two-run homerun to lead No. 2 seed Wingate University over No. 7 seed Mars Hill College 5-2 in the first round of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference softball tournament held at Cherry Park. Wingate will meet No. 3 seed Presbyterian College today at 3 p.m. in the winners bracket. MHC will face No. 6 seed Tusculum College in the losers bracket, also at 3 p.m. this afternoon. Courtney Kline (Hudson, FL) gave MHC a 1-0 lead in the first inning after she crossed the plate on a passed ball. Wingate wasted little time taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the first inning when Cameron Langston (Goldsboro, NC) singled to center field to score Sarah Carleton (Powhatan, VA) and Carey Bumgardner (Mechanicsville, VA). Wingate would never trail the Lions again. Cunninghams two-run homerun came in the bottom half of the second inning to extend the Bulldogs advantage to 4-1. The runs came after Joy Henry (Virginia Beach, VA) hit a two out double that allowed Cunningham to come to the plate. Wingate took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after Carrie Rountree (Fayetteville, GA) singled to left field to plate Megan McPhail (Fayetteville, NC). The Lions added their second and final run of the contest in the top of the sixth after Amy Whitley (Booneville, MS) singled to left field to drive in Danielle Gleeson (Asheville, NC). Following for Cunningham for Wingate were Bumgardner and Henry who recorded two hits apiece. Langston was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Lauren Powell (Midlothian, VA) threw a complete game for the Bulldogs scattering six hits allowing only a single earned run to pick up the victory (12-4). Whitley led MHC going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jessica Valentine (Frederick, MD) was 2-for-2 at the plate. Kristi Marszalec (West Bloomfield, MI) took the loss (12-14). Carson-Newman 3, Newberry 2 Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C. Carson-Newman sophomore Lauren McKaig (Trenton, Ga.) hit a two-strike, two-out, bases-loaded single over the second base bag to give the Eagles a 3-2 victory over Newberry College in the opening round of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament at Cherry Park in Rock Hill. Top-seeded Carson-Newman improves to 36-8 and advances to face #4 Catawba in a 3 oclock second round game. Newberry (17-30) will play #5 Lenoir-Rhyne in the consolation bracket, also at 3 p.m. The stage was set for McKaigs game-winning RBI after Newberry pitcher Kayce McLeod (Newberry, S.C.) retired the first two batters, then allowed Mandy Stevens and Erin Rutherford (both of Knoxville, Tenn.) to reach on singles. McLeod gave C-N cleanup hitter and conference Player of the Year Lisa Rogers (Rossville, Ga.) a free pass to first to load the bases. McKaig then produced the final hit, a high bouncer that cleared McLeods upstretched glove and that was unreachable by the infield. Stevens put Carson-Newman ahead in the third with a no-out, bases-loaded single to center that scored Whitney Hickam (Knoxville, Tenn.), but Newberry escaped without further damage. In the fourth, McKaig singled and later scored off Wickhams RBI groundout to put the Eagles on top 2-0. Newberry responded in the fifth inning. First baseman Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) singled and was replaced on the base paths by Betsy Shealy (Leesville, S.C.). Left fielder Ashleigh Anderson (Barnwell, S.C.) drove in Shealy on a two-out single to draw within 2-1. In the sixth, Indian designated hitter Sarah Lynch (Pompano Beach, Fla.) took the first pitch she saw over the left field wall to even the contest. SAC Pitcher of the Year Megan Elliott (Chattanooga, Tenn.) recorded her 33rd win of the season, allowing six hits and one earned run. McLeod surrendered nine hits and an earned run in the loss. Presbyterian 10, Tusculum 4 Box Score ROCK HILL, SC - Presbyterian College scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning and then held off Tusculum College, 10-4, to take a victory in the opening round of the 2005 Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference softball tournament at Cherry Park in Rock Hill. After Jessica Taylor (Greeneville, TN) gave the Pioneers (23-23) a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning on a solo homerun to left, PC scored six runs on six hits in the bottom of the inning to take control of the game. After two singles, Lauren Hixson (Spartanburg, SC) tied up the game with a single down the left field line. Kellyn Henderson (Simpsonville, SC) then singled to score Hixson and Amanda Carvajal (Merced, CA). After a Rachel Bailey (Howard, OH) single, Jessica Peterka (Sarasota, FL) hit her second homerun of the year to give PC (32-21) the 6-1 lead. The Lady Blue Hose scored a run in each of the next four innings to set the final margin. Peterka led PC at the plate with four hits, two of them homeruns, and four RBIs. Henderson finished the game with three hits and three RBIs and Tina Deveaux had two hits for the Lady Blue Hose. Taylor led Tusculum at the plate with three hits. Samantha Slater (Westerville, OH) picked up the win for PC, throwing four innings and allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. PC will now move on to the quarterfinals of the Food Lion/SAC Tournament where they will face Wingate University at 3:00 pm today. TC will meet Mars Hill College in the losers bracket, also at 3 p.m. Catawba 3, Lenoir-Rhyne 2 Box Score ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to lift the fourth-seeded Lady Indians to a 3-2 win over fifth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne in an opening round game of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament on Friday morning at Cherry Park. Catawba improves to 26-23 overall and will face Carson-Newman in a winners bracket semifinal on Friday afternoon. Lenoir-Rhyne, now 34-15-1, will play Newberry in an elimination game on Friday afternoon. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) scattered seven hits, walked three and struck out eight in the complete game win for the Lady Indians. She improved to 20-13 on the mound and became Catawbas first-ever 20- game winner. The Lady Indians scratched for an early run as Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) led off the Catawba first with a double, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC). Lenoir-Rhyne battled back in the third. With two outs, Taylor Queen (Conover, NC) singled for the initial Bear hit of the game. Karen Reames (Laurens, SC) followed with a double and Karie Pushard (Harrisburg, NC) drove home both runners with a ground-rule double to left. Catawba scored the winning runs in the fourth with two outs. Lacey Waldroop (Franklin, NC) led off with a single and Janie Motsinger (Kernersville, NC) drew a two-out walk. Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) sliced a single to right that got passed the Bear right fielder and allowed both runs to score. Lenoir-Rhyne put their first two runners on in the sixth, but Motsinger caught a line drive off the bat of Pushard in right field and turned it into a double play to quell the threat. Rhoades had two of Catawbas five hits off Alexis Kreske (21-11), who walked two and struck out five. Only two of the three runs off her were earned. Queen and Reames had two hits apiece for the Bears. Mars Hill 10, Tusculum 3 Box Score Rock Hill, SC - Amy Whitley (Booneville, MS) went 4-for-4 with three homeruns, a double and seven RBI to lead the Lions of Mars Hill College past the Tusculum College Pioneers 10-3 in the 2005 Food Lion SAC Softball Tournament held at Cherry Park. MHC improved to 25-32 with the win while Tusculum ends their season with a 23-24 overall record. MHC will meet No. 4 seed Catawba College tomorrow at 12 p.m. TC took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Nicole Ringwall (Rose Hill, KS) scored on a Lion error and then Jessica Taylor (Greeneville, TN) scored on a fielder's choice. Whitley then belted the game-winning homerun over the left field fence that also scored Self to give MHC a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish. TC pulled within a single run (4-3) of the Lions in the fifth inning after Ringwall scored on a sacrifice fly by Brie Griffin (Glendale, AZ). MHC scored three runs in the fifth inning highlighted by Whitley's second two-run homerun of the game. Whitley then made the final tally 10-3 when she hit her third homerun to left- center in the sixth inning that scored Tessa Ashwell (Roanoke, VA) and Kristina Osborn (Birmingham, AL). Following Whitley's stellar performance was Kline who went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Amber Maynard (Ocala, FL) was 1-for-3 with a double. Lindsey Hert (Simpsonville, SC) threw a complete game scattering six hits and allowing only a single earned run. Griffin led the Pioneers with two RBI while Jeannie Keebler (Port Orange, FL) was 1-for-4 with a double. Monica Funigiello (Naples, FL) took the loss (7-9) for the Pioneers throwing three innings. Carson-Newman 5, Catawba 1 Box Score ROCK HILL, SC - Top-seeded Carson-Newman advanced to the winner's bracket final of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament with a 5-1 win over fourth-seeded Catawba on Friday afternoon at Cherry Park. The Lady Eagles improve to 37-8 overall and will face the winner of the Presbyterian/Wingate game on Saturday afternoon in the winner's bracket final. Catawba, now 26-24, will face Mars Hill in an elimination game on Saturday at noon. Mandy Stevens (Knoxville, TN) and Erin Rutherford (Knoxville, TN) hit back-to-back one-out doubles in the first inning to stake Carson-Newman to a 1-0 lead. The Lady Eagles got a two-out, two-run single from Rutherford in the second to plate a pair of unearned run for a 3-0 edge. Catawba left the bases loaded in the second and failed to take advantage of a one-out double by Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) in the third and a lead-off double by Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) in the sixth. The Lady Eagles would get two-out RBI singles from Whitney Hickam (Knoxville, TN) in the third and Stevens in the fifth for its 5-0 advantage. Catawba finally broke through in the seventh. Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) and Lyndsey Gay (Cleveland, NC) hit consecutive one-out singles and Rivera followed with a RBI double. Rivera had two hits in the game for Catawba, both doubles, while Gay also collected two hits. Megan Elliott (Chatanooga, TN) earned the win for Carson-Newman to improve to 34-8 on the year. She allowed one run on nine hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Rutherford led the Lady Eagle offense with three hits and three RBI. Lenoir-Rhyne 12, Newberry 4 Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C. - Lenoir-Rhyne's bats were blazing with two outs in the sixth inning, as the Bears scored five runs and put a premature run-rule finish on the game, defeating Newberry 12-4 in the elimination bracket of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament at Cherry Park Friday afternoon. Lenoir-Rhyne moves to 35-15-1 and into a Saturday matchup against the loser of Presbyterian-Wingate at noon. Newberry College finishes its season at 17-31. Lenoir-Rhyne's Leah Krohn (Taylorsville, N.C.) started the scoring with a double to left center, driving in Taylor Queen (Conover, N.C.) who reached on a leadoff double. Chrissy Lunsford (Tyrone, Ga.) and Vicki Perry (Snow Camp, N.C.) produced RBI singles, and Jessica Luper (Fort Mill, SC) put the exclamation point on the win with the two-RBI double. After the Bears jumped ahead 3-0 in the first, Newberry's Sarah Lynch (Pompano Beach, Fla.) evened the score with a three-run dinger to left field, her second of the day. L-R put three more on the board in the third, as Perry and Brooke Starnes (Conover, N.C.) turned in RBIs. Krohn drove in another run in the fourth to make it 7-3, advantage Bears. Newberry attempted a comeback in the fifth, scoring a run off Courtney Lindler's (Irmo, S.C.) single, but could get no closer than 7-4. The Bears' five-run sixth inning clinched the final margin. L-R pitcher Kristin Duvall (Pasadena, Md.) earned her 12th victory of the year, while Christina Kirby (Delmar, Del.) took the loss for Newberry. The Presbyterian-Wingate contest was postponed due to heavy rains and lightning and will be finished at 11 a.m. in the morning. PC leads Wingate 7-1 with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
