Presbyterian 3, Tusculum 0 HICKORY, N.C. ---Top seed Presbyterian College advanced to the semifinals of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Tournament after defeating No. 8 seed Tusculum College 30-14 30-27, 30-20 Saturday morning at Shuford Gymnasium on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne College. PC advances to the semifinals where they will face the No. 4 seed Lenoir-Rhyne, who defeated No. 5 seed Catawba College, at 4 pm in one semifinal match. Tusculum ends its season at 9-22. The Lady Blue Hose (30-4) used a balanced attack to defeat the Pioneers as a trio of All-SAC selections in seniors Erin Friday (Summerville, S.C.) and Jasmin Brown (Alpharetta, Ga.), along with sophomore Lauren Mason (Peachtree City, Ga.) each tallied 12 kills apiece in the match. SAC Freshman of the Year selection, Rachel Lewis (Bloomington, Ind.) dished out a match-high 43 assists to go along with eight digs for PC. Friday led PC's defense with 13 digs, while freshman libero Malorey Grove (Albany, Ind.) added 12 digs. The Pioneers were led on offense by freshman Amanda Trent (Chattanooga, Tenn.) who tallied 12 kills and four assist blocks while teammate, junior Vanessa Fortes (San Francisco, Calif.) added 11 kills and two assist blocks. 30-14,30-27,30-20 Lenoir-Rhyne 3, Catawba 1 Hickory, N.C. - The fourth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne College Volleyball Team (22-11) defeated No. 5 Catawba College (12-17) by a 3-1 score (30-23, 18-30, 30-24, 30-16) Saturday morning in the first round of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Tournament at Shuford Gymnasium in Hickory. The Bears, who extended their winning streak to 10 matches, will now face the top-seeded Blue Hose of Presbyterian College (30-4) in the semifinals this afternoon at 4 p.m. After splitting the first two games, the Bears took control of the match by winning the last two games including an easy, 14-point victory in the fourth and final game. Senior middle blocker Angela Danley (Snellville, Ga./South Gwinnett HS) led the way for Lenoir-Rhyne with a double-double (25 kills and 10 digs) while sophomore setter Lauren McLelland (Statesville, N.C./West Iredell HS) finished with 53 assists and eight digs and sophomore libero Catherine Fulton (Hendersonville, N.C./Hendersonville HS) tallied a game-high 28 digs. For the Lady Indians, freshman Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette HS) led the way with 14 kills and 11 digs while sophomore setter Andi Henderson (Swansboro, N.C./Swansboro HS) also finished with a double-double (35 assists and 18 digs). 30-23,18-30,30-24,30-16 Wingate 3, Mars Hill 0 Hickory, N.C. - The Wingate University Volleyball Team (24-4) advanced to the semifinals of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 sweep (33-31, 30-26 and 30-27) of Mars Hill College (13-22) in the first round Saturday afternoon in Shufurd Gymnasium in Hickory, N.C. The Bulldogs were seeded second and will take on third- seeded Carson-Newman (17-16) in the semifinals at 7 p.m., Saturday evening while the Lady Lions came into the tournament as the seventh seed. Wingate's Rebecca Brezovec (Durham, N.C./Riverside HS), a junior outside hitter, led the way for the Bulldogs with a game-high 14 kills while sophomore setter Melissa Deluca (Bahama, N.C./Northern Durham HS) and sophomore libero Amanda Siegrist (Wexford, Pa./Pine Richland HS) finished with 35 assists and 19 digs, respectively. Senior outside hitter/middle blocker Ashley Beasley (Winter Park, Fla./Western Carolina University) tallied 11 kills and freshman Jessica Britt (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch HS) totaled 34 assists to lead the Lady Lions. Mars Hill 33-31,30-26,30-27 Carson-Newman 3, Newberry 0 HICKORY, N.C. - The Eagles of Carson-Newman advanced to the semifinals of the Food Lion SAC Tournament with a three-game sweep over Newberry, 30-22, 30-24, 30-24. The Eagles were led by Kelli Sorensen who put down 14 kills in the match while Meg Davis notched another nine. Libero Blair Young had a solid defensive match with 16 digs while Maia Ferry had six blocks on the afternoon. Jamie Foster-Mann notched 14 kills, hitting .379 and had two of sixth-seeded Newberry's four blocks.. Newberry closes out their season at 13-17, 5-9 in the South Atlantic Conference recording the most number of wins in a season since going 13-20 (3-11 SAC) in 2002 and tying the school record for conference wins set in a season, previously set in 2000 (5-9). Carson-Newman advances to the semi-finals of the weekend tournament to face second-seeded Wingate, who swept seventh-seeded Mars Hill in another quarterfinal match-up. Carson-Newman came out on fire in game one taking a quick 17-10 lead and never looked back. Sorensen led the Eagles with seven kills and hit .600 in the game while Gibson added four kills and 15 assists. Tonya Deese led Newberry with four kills but Carson-Newman doubled up Newberry on kills, 20-10, en route to a 30-22 game one victory. Newberry jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in game two but couldn't hold on as Kelsey Fleck and Meg Davis led the Eagles with three kills each to a 30-24 game two victory. Newberry was led by Laurie Barman with three kills in the game but her three errors on eight total attempts gave her a .000 hitting percentage which was the story of the Indians' woes in game two as Carson-Newman hit .152 to Newberry's .043 in the game. For the second consecutive game, Newberry outblocked the Eagles 2-0 but it wasn't enough as C-N took the 2-0 match lead. Jamie Foster-Mann was unstoppable in game three as she put down 11 kills and hit .733 in the game. Sorensen led C-N with seven kills and hit .500 and for the first game in the match, Newberry recorded more kills than the Eagles, 19-17. However Carson-Newman had 5.5 blocks in the game to Newberry's zero and hit .357 to .289 and Newberry was unable to overcome the Eagle defense as Carson-Newman sealed the match sweep with a 30-24 game three victory. 30-22,30-24,30-24 Wingate 3, Carson-Newman 1 Hickory, N.C. - Molly Kerns and Kathryn Reddick each notched 14 kills as four Bulldogs reached double digit kills as second-seeded Wingate topped third- seeded Carson-Newman in the second semifinal match of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament Saturday evening at Lenoir-Rhyne College. Kelsey Fleck led the Eagles with 13 kills while Blaire Young added 24 digs. Game scores were 30-26, 23-30, 30-18 and 30-26. Wingate advances to the tournament championship to face the top-seeded Presbyterian Blue Hose on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. Presbyterian swept through the conference regular season 14-0 and has made their way through the first two rounds of the tournament with a 3-0 victory over eighth-seeded Tusculum and a 3-1 victory over host and fourth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne. Lauren Ashley put down 13 kills for the Bulldog effort while Rebecca Brezovec added 11 kills and six blocks. Kerns added to the powerful net presence of the Bulldogs with eight blocks as Wingate outblocked Carson-Newman 14-4. Melissa Deluca dished out 50 assists and two service aces in the match. Amanda Siegrist added to the Bulldog defensive effort with 22 digs. Wingate outhit Carson-Newman in game one .312 to .143 and outblocked the Eagles 4-0 but still had to fight hard to pull out the 30-26 game victory. Wingate's serving struggled with the Bulldogs serving up only one ace and four errors while the Eagles and four aces and four service errors. Fleck paced C-N with five kills and Yong added eight digs. Deluca, Kerns and Danielle Thompson led Wingate with four kills apiece while Brezovec had four blocks in the opening set. Carson-Newman streaked to a 22-14 and then a 24-17 lead in game two and never looked back. Meg Davis put down five kills for the Eagles as Carson-Newman hit .317 in the game. Lauren Alley led Wingate with five kills while the Bulldogs hit .206. Wingate's serving hurt the Bulldogs in game two with two aces and three errors while Carson-Newman served up four aces and only two errors. Wingate rebounded quickly in game three jumping out to a 17-10 lead and held their largest lead of the game and match at 28-16. The Bulldogs hit .273 in the match while Carson-Newman hit -.048. The Bulldogs recorded four blocks to the Eagles' none with Deluca and Kerns pairing up for three of the four blocks in the game. Kerns and Alley had five kills for Wingate while Maia Ferry had four kills for C-N. Wingate took a 10-3 lead in game four but spent the rest of the time fending off a repetitive Eagle attack as Carson-Newman kept pulling to within two or three points everytime Wingate would take a six, seven or eight point lead. Despite the close match, Wingate doubled up C-N on kills 20-10 and hit .254 to the Eagles' .093. Wingate Bulldogs def. Carson-Newman
