PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE 67, CARSON-NEWMAN COLLEGE 64

CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College placed three players in double figures led by senior Johann Collins' 17 points and 12 rebounds en route to a 67-64 victory over Carson-Newman College in quarterfinal action of the 2006 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament held in the Ross E. Templeton Center Wednesday night.

With the victory, Presbyterian (23-8) advances to the semifinals where they will play the winner of No. 3 Catawba/No. 6 Tusculum on Saturday, March 4 at 6:00 pm at the Catawba Valley Community Center. Carson-Newman ends the season at 10-17.

The first half was highlighted by five ties and six lead changes with the largest lead coming at five points by the Blue Hose on three occasions. PC led 23-18 at the 6:58 mark on a layup by senior Collins, but Carson-Newman fought back and trimmed the lead only one point at 30-29 on a steal and layup by senior Milo Johnson (Lake Alford, FL) as the teams entered halftime.

Ballenger paced the Blue Hose with 12 first half points on five-of-eight shooting from the floor, while Johnson led the Eagles with eight points on three-of-four shooting from the floor. Carson-Newman outscored the Blue Hose off the bench 13-2 in the first half, but the Blue Hose led in second chance points 10-2.

In the second half, the Blue Hose led by as many as eight points at 50-42 on a three-pointer by sophomore Pat Kiscaden (Oviedo, FL) at the 10:43 mark, but Carson-Newman's sophomore Andy Tipton (Maryville, TN) scored 10 straight points to pull the Eagles to within one point at 54-53 with 6:21 remaining.

The Eagles would not let the Blue Hose extend the lead past five points the rest of the game and trailed by only three points at 67-64 with :19 seconds remaining, but Carson-Newman's last attempt at a game-tying three-pointer fell short as time expired.

Joining Collins for Blue Hose scoring honors was fellow senior Tray Ballenger (Wellford, S.C.), who tallied 14 points, while junior Sean Dixon (Marietta, Ga.) added 15 points and eight assists. Carson-Newman was paced by junior Kente Hart's (Evansville, IN) 13 points, while sophomore Darren Williams (Lawrenceville, Ga.) added 11 points, and Tipton added 10 points.

TUSCULUM PIONEERS 87, CATAWBA INDIANS 84

SALISBURY, NC – Tusculum built a 14-point second half lead then held off a late rally by host Catawba to post an 87-84 victory in the opening round of the 2006 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The sixth-seeded Pioneers improve to 14-14 and advance to a Saturday semifinal against second-seeded Presbyterian. The third-seeded Indians end their season at 22-8.

The Pioneers built on a one-point halftime advantage and grabbed a 77-63 lead with 8:59 to go on a pair of free throws by Matt Farus (Zanesville, OH). Catawba then began a furious rally that brought the Indians within 78-74 on a layup by Jamel Hamilton (Virginia Beach, VA) with 5:19 remaining.

Tusculum’s Gabe Story (Greeneville, TN) converted a layup with 1:22 left to put the Pioneers on top 85-78. The Indians got a three-point play by Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND), a free throw by Ahmad Murphy (Orangeburg, SC) and another layup by Magnusson with 16 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 85-84.

Farus hit one free throw with 13 seconds left and Catawba had three chances in the final seconds to tie the game, but could not convert. Jordan Lear (Zanesville, OH) made one free throw with 2.7 seconds remaining and Magnusson’s half court heave at the buzzer was off the mark.

Magnusson led all scorers with 23 points in his final game and added seven rebounds. Chris Wooldridge (Norfolk, VA) was the only other Catawba player in double digits with 16. Chris Poore (Greeneville, TN) posted a double-double for Tusculum with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Story and Lear each tallied 17 points, while Donald Sexton (Oneida, TN) had 15 points and nine assists.

The Pioneers shot 56% in the win, including 60% in the opening half. Catawba hit on just 40% and a mere 34% in the final half. The Indians did hold a 50-31 edge on the boards and held a 28-9 edge in second chance points.

LENOIR-RHYNE 84, MARS HILL 75

Hickory, N.C. – The No. 1-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne College Men's Basketball Team (18-9) advanced to the semifinals of the 2006 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament after defeating eighth-seeded Mars Hill College (9-19), 84-75, in the first round Wednesday night at Shuford Gymnasium.

The Bears, winners of three straight, will take on the fourth-seeded Bulldogs of Wingate University Saturday at 1 p.m., at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, N.C.

Sophomore forward Josh Kindred (Holly Springs, N.C./Fuquay-Varina HS) was one of five Lenoir-Rhyne players to score in double figures, finishing with a team-high 21 points and a game-high nine rebounds, as the Bears won their 11th straight game at home and 17th straight at Shuford Gymnasium against league foes.

In the losing effort, Mars Hill senior and SAC Player Of The Year Walt Baxley (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led all scorers with 37 points including 26 after intermission but it wasn't enough as the Lions fell to the Bears for the third time this year.

Lenoir-Rhyne used a 17-0 run late in the first half to take a 44-33 lead into break.

In the second half, the Bears held a 71-61 advantage with 8:14 left thanks to a technical foul on the Mars Hill bench but the Lions battled back with 10 straight points culminated by a lay-up from Jamison McIver (Taylorsville, N.C.) with 5:14 remaining to tie the contest at 71.

Lenoir-Rhyne, however, responded quickly with back-to-back treys from junior guards Eric Mauldin (Albemarle, N.C./Albemarle HS) and Marcus Springs (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park HS) and reeled off eight straight points for a 79-71 lead at the 2:46 mark of the second half and the Lions would not get any closer than six points the rest of the way.

Sophomore guard Josh Rudder (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance HS) added 13 points and Mauldin came of the bench to score a season-high 12 points including three treys while Chris Aline (Reinach, Switzerland) also scored in double figures for the Lions.

The Bears also shot 59 percent (24-of-41) from the floor including 67 percent (16-of-24) in the first half.

WINGATE 100, NEWBERRY 72

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore forward Sean Barnette (Rock Hill, S.C.) notched a double-double with game-high totals of 24 points and 11 rebounds as the Bulldogs defeated Newberry College 100-72 in the quarterfinals of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball tournament Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena on the Wingate campus.

With the victory, Wingate improves to 16-12 overall. The number four seed Bulldogs will face number one seed Lenoir-Rhyne College in the tourney semifinals Saturday in Hickory. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. at the Catawba Valley Community College Arena. The Bears defeated Mars Hill College 84-75 Wednesday night.

Wingate junior guard Justin Baker (Lumberton, N.C.) had 21 points, including 17 points in the opening frame. Junior guard/forward Shaun Kirkland (Allendale, S.C.) had 19 points and eight rebounds as Wingate outrebounded Newberry 49-39. Wingate redshirt sophomore Bryan Grier (Charlotte, N.C.) had 16 points and a game-high four blocks. Grier leads the nation in blocked shots.

Newberry junior forward Sammy Monroe (Mount Olive, N.C.) led the Indians with 18 points. Indian junior guard Alonzo Hinds (Freeport, Bahamas) added 15 points off the bench for the visitors. Newberry concludes the 2005-06 season 12-15 overall.

On Wednesday night, Wingate never trailed against Newberry. The Bulldogs sprinted to a 42-29 halftime lead, thanks in large part to 17 first-half points by Baker and 12 first-half points by Grier.

In the second half, Wingate shot 63.6 percent (21-of-33) from the floor as Newberry never cut the margin below double digits. Two free throws by senior guard Fernando Powell (Chester, Va.) give Wingate its biggest lead at 97-65 with 2:34 remaining in the contest. The Bulldogs made 59.7 percent of their field goals on the evening (37-of-62).

Newberry shot 29.8 percent (25-of-84) from the floor Wednesday night. Only one 2005-06 Wingate opponent (Tusculum at Tusculum, January 7) has converted more than 50 percent from the floor this season.
