SALISBURY, NC
-- Mars Hill defeated host Catawba 5-4 in an opening round match of the 2006 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Johnson Tennis Center. The Lions improve to 9-9 and advance to a Friday semifinal to be held at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN. Catawba falls to 18-6.

The Lions took a 2-1 lead after doubles with a key 9-8 win at #1 as Diego Rodriguez and John Allen defeated the Catawba team of Jose Velazquez and Drew Ramsey. Mars Hill picked up singles wins by Rodriquez at #1 and Allen at #2, while the Indians claimed wins by Geoff Fouad at #4, Andrew Sufficool at #5 and Ramsey at #6 to even the match at 4-4.

The match was decided at the #3 position between Mars Hill’s Oscar Gomez and Catawba’s Jonathan Hack. Hack battled back from a 5-3 deficit to win the second set in a tie-breaker, but Gomez took the third set tie-breaker for the deciding point.

Carson-Newman 5, Newberry 1
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Scott Gates (Atlanta, Ga.) and Daryl Van Vuuren (Durban, S. Africa) collaborated for a hard-fought 9-8 (2) win in number one singles, but that was the Indians' only point of the afternoon as they fell, 5-1, to Carson-Newman this afternoon in the First Round of the Food Lion/South Atlantic Conference Tournament.

The Eagles' only needed the first three singles contests to post the win over Newberry. Ricardo Gutierrez only gave up two games in his two set win over Van Vuuren. C-N's Rafael Soares prevailed 6-3 and 6-4 over Felipe Sobrinho. Carson-Newman's final point of the match came when Giuseppe Schwartz defeated Newberry's Popovich, 6-3, 6-3.

Carson-Newman will advance to the semi-finals on Friday to face #2 seed Tusculum College at 9:00 a.m.
